Yep ... It's certainly NTL's transparent proxy or cache that's causing this. I used to be with NTL and had continual problems of the type you mention.
To establish if you are on a transparent proxy, do the proxy test here:
http://www.all-nettools.com/toolbox,net
The site will tell you if you have a proxy. (NTL and Telewest are now the same beastie and are the only ISP's who do this.
Also the Admins on this forum will be able to look at the stats to see where you are coming from (which probably will be a proxy).
There's no way round not going through a proxy with NTL or Telewest but you can manually set another proxy up within Firefox that should work without any of these problems.
Click on this link for instructions on how to do it.

Blow by blow instructions can also be found at:
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d.h. ... cache.html
containing a list of proxies to try. Bobuk - As you live in Manchester, I would try these first.
manc-cache-1.server.ntli.net
manc-cache-2.server.ntli.net
manc-cache-3.server.ntli.net
manc-cache-4.server.ntli.net
manc-cache-5.server.ntli.net
manc-cache-6.server.ntli.net
manc-cache-7.server.ntli.net
manc-cache-8.server.ntli.net
manc-cache-9.server.ntli.net
manc-cache-10.server.ntli.net
manc-cache-11.server.ntli.net
manc-cache-12.server.ntli.net
manc-cache-13.server.ntli.net
manc-cache-14.server.ntli.net
I'm certain that this is also the cause of Rick's problems as he may be on Telewest which is the same as NTHell. :?
It all sounds so familiar with the problems that I used to have when running a forum on NTL. I would make changes to the board and never used to see them.
