Help for those with Transparent caches (Bobuk and Rick)

The following is a copy of a post made in the Testing forum concerning problems with sigs and transparent caches.

Yep ... It's certainly NTL's transparent proxy or cache that's causing this. I used to be with NTL and had continual problems of the type you mention.

To establish if you are on a transparent proxy, do the proxy test here:

The site will tell you if you have a proxy. (NTL and Telewest are now the same beastie and are the only ISP's who do this.

Also the Admins on this forum will be able to look at the stats to see where you are coming from (which probably will be a proxy).

There's no way round not going through a proxy with NTL or Telewest but you can manually set another proxy up within Firefox that should work without any of these problems.

I'm certain that this is also the cause of Rick's problems as he may be on Telewest which is the same as NTHell.  :?

It all sounds so familiar with the problems that I used to have when running a forum on NTL. I would make changes to the board and never used to see them.

No Telewest is not the same, (might be the same company) but they have a separate system than NTL, I use Telewest and have no problems at all (also don't use proxies to put us through)

If it was a problem then no Sigs would show it wouldn't just be there own sigs that don't show to them, all the sigs come from the same place so all of them would stop showing if it was a problem such as what you are suggesting

Edit: Dazza thinks he has fixed it due to an error with the forum, just need them to log back on and take a look

Being an ex-Telewest customer, I can concur that the issue of "transparent caching" as used by the cable firms can sometimes be an issue, so you were right to give a possible cause for the problem, even if it turned out afterwards, that it was actually a forum issue.

Sometimes, things "break" without any specific clue as to what is causing it, so having a range of "possibles" enables people to make sensible choices about what it might be, even if they discard the suggestions as being "inappropriate" in their specific circumstances.

And that's why the forum is so useful - we can get lots of input from a range of members, who all have an opinion - and the chances are "Halifax--Lad knows all the RIGHT answers anyways....."
