Just a quick line to say Hi.

Just recently come across Boinc although i have known of seti@home for some time. Don't know skip so will need to take some time for learning all of the in's and out's.

Hi dezcore and welcome to the team and boinc

A good place to start would be the UK BOINC Team website (click the banner image at the top of this page).
In there you'll see a section titled BOINC Stuff, have a look around and see if anything suits your needs.

Welcome to the Team...!

If you need help getting started, just let us know what sort of PC you've got, what you use it for (mainly) and how long each day it's on for.

Obviously, a fast PC helps although if you use it for gaming, then this will affect BOINC (in terms of general crunching ability) as the CPU will be "tied up" playing your game, rather than crunching. Of course, the longer the PC is sqwitched on for, then the more "work" you can do for the projects you join and hence for the Team.

All you really need to do (to get started) is to download the latest BOINC Manager for your type of PC (Windows, Linux or Mac) and then sign up for one (or more) of the projects and let it rip.

All the links are on the Team website.

PC is 1Ghz 256Mb RAM running Xp Pro.

Have boinc 5.4.11 think. Mostly used for playing poker, surfing the web, playing a MUD, and generally whatever else takes my fancy but not high-end gaming. CPU usage is generally rather low.

Pc is on most hours of the day especially if involved in multiple poker tourneys.

Currently have einstein@home and seti@home so far - test driving so to speak with a massive 39.74 credits :oops: on einstein@home.

With boinc in background i've yet to see a dip in performance which is great!

OK, so you can expect a reasonable performance from that. Obviously, would be much better with a CPU in the 2GHz (or higher range) but 1GHz is fine.

You'd probably find it will work much better if you can up the memory to at least 512Mb - XP will then use the swap file less and you'll have a bit better performance on everything you run.

If you're not in to "mega" type gaming, then BOINC will appreciate this as it will get it's fair share of CPU time, allowing you to crunch for longer.

Timewise is OK as well - some people only crunch for maybe 2-3 hours a day (when the PC is "on") and hence they have little chance of completing a work unit before the "to completion" deadline.

Have you joined any Team yet? If not, you're welcome to join UBT...even if you only have 39.74 credits....

I can't find your forum username in the stats listings - so is your forum username the same as your BOINC username?

Boinc Manager shows my team for seti and einstein as UK Boinc Team, and I've finally shown up at boincstats. Although my CPID shows nothing as of yet.

Everything is under dezcore.

My stats have picked you up on both Einstein and Seti.
CPIDs are the same for both projects, so you're looking good.

Thanks very much guys, will carry on reading the various topics during work - not much else to do.

Need to learn,learn,learn. and have plenty of time to do it
