S Club Crunch for August Bank Hol W/E - 26-28th Aug
Hi all,
Just a quick heads-up.
As we haven't had a Crunch for a while, and as Darren had already planted the seed of an idea - so, I thought it a good idea to create one for this forthcoming August Bank Holiday weekend, which is from 26th-28th August.
And, the idea I came up with was to help generate a nice bunch of credits for three specific projects, where we are about to move up a ranking place - in order to become the #1 Team on the project:
e.g.
On SAP, we're already #1 UK Team,. but we're fast approaching being #1 World ranked Team...!
On SETI and on SIMAP, we're in 2nd place in UK and bearing down on the #1 UK Team...!
So, the idea came to me to do an S Club Crunch where each member is requested to crunch on any project, as long as the project name starts with the letter S.
SAP, SETI and SIMAP are obviously included, as is Sztaki, SETI Astropulse and Spinhenge. Of course in order to maximise your effort for the Team as a whole, it'd be best to crunch for SETI, SAP and SIMAP so we have a better chance of reaching that elusive #1 ranking position sooner. (You can always use the other projects as a back-up, in case there's little or no work...)
So, anytime between now and 23:59 on 25th August, set your BOINC Manager to "No new tasks" on anything NOT begining with an S and start crunching for us on the "S" projects.
I would hope that by the end of the S Club Crunch we'd be significantly closer to #1 - we might even have got there on at least one of the projects....!
regards
Tim

Hi Chris,UBT - Chris Suddick wrote:I'm afraid I'm going away this Bank Holiday so I've decided I'll do my 'S Club Crunch' a few days early. I've started Simap and I've just got my first credits for it plus a few more pending. Might get a couple of hundred before I switch off for the weekend.
Chris.
Thanks for "thinking ahead" and helping out now - seems a shame your PC('s) won't be crunching while you're away....maybe we can set up a friends network to allow other people to "house-sit" PC's while their owners are away....! :D
Hmmmm.....
Have a safe journey and enjoy yourself, while we've got our noses to the grindstone, catching up...!

You seem to have got the impression I'm going to be enjoying myself while I'm away. Far from it. I've got to sit an exam, something I've not had to do for 25 years...and I'm cra**ing myself!
Chris.
It was the bit that you said:
that foxed me....!going away this Bank Holiday
Most people going away on a BH Weekend are usually using it as a "long weekend" and having some fun...!
Exams are easy - just remember they aren't trying to "catch you out" - they are just trying to find out what you know.
Just be calm, remember to read all the questions BEFORE you answer ANY. Then you can pace yourself, as well as inspire yourself, coz you'll no doubt see "easy" questions that you know you can do, which are later on in the exam paper. Then just take your time.
regards and GOOD LUCK,
Tim

Well, I'm a-crunchin' SIMAP for now. I've been doing SETI for years and thought it time for a change.
Mind you I am narked about the stats. I spent years on the old SETI software doing the work, and in no time at all I got more credits for newer projects on BOINC than I was awarded for all the old SETI work. Harumph!
We shall see what this gets for us!

and SAP needs every little bit
Okay, I have 2x 3ghz P4's with 512Mb RAM. They can run 1 SAP wu out of work hours, or 2x seti or simap wu's 24/7... I am sacrificing 250RAC in SAP for much more on SETI/SIMAP... Surely thats okay! :?
Anyway - I just spent over a grand to get my quad-core opty with 4gb running to bring the stats up on SAP, so I'm allowed!!! :bootyshake:
:D :D
Just got paid as well, and I have 2 more Opty processors on my desk...
Can I resist getting these badboys crunching? I think not!

I said Quad board not dual
4 x opty 270 @ 2Ghz 2Mbcache = £1200
Tyne Quad board = £1000- £1200
8 x 1Gb (8Gb Total) Corsair XMS in matched pairs (2-2-2-5 1T) = £700
2 x 150Gb Western Digital Raptor-X Sata 10000Rpm 16Mb cache (4.6ms Seek) = £320
now I need a case + 600Wpsu = £45
The power/speed is in the XMS(2-2-2-5 1T) memory, makes sure the processors don't waste clock ticks waiting for memory to pass info
All in = £3500 = A Stupidly fast PC which burns holes in the carpet

Ahhhhh...
So your after an Octo-core BEAST!
I have a couple of Opty 848's, which I was thinking about putting in a Tyan Quad socket mobo (which I found for around $1400 / £800 for USA), but thought the dual socket / quad core much better value for money...
I spent the rest of my cash on a week in portugal - leaving this wednesday...
Good luck in your build - can't wait to hear your experiences when you finally get it booted!!!

SETI Astropulse/BETA though come on people get some crunching done there too its testing a new version of the science app for the main SETI project, plus if we can get in an extra 1,000 credits a week we will soon be number 1 in the UK at SETI BETA

Sztaki's a pain in the butt at the moment. Had a look at other people's WU's and they're getting 'computation error's all over the place just like me. So I tried but got no credits for the ones I did run and crashed - looks like 90 creditsworth lost there.
"Kiss of Death" strikes again! I've detached from this project for now so that may help! :D

Just back from holiday Saturday night, and read about the S Club Crunch
Started crunching SIMAP, and have to agree about Sztaki, that it is a waste of time.
With so many good projects I won't be crunching Sztaki or VTU again.
I must say how impressed I've been with the changes in a short time.
Lots of postings in the forum to read, and a lot of new members

All ready dropped by 36 hours in 7 hours of run time!UBT - Mikeejones wrote:Just downloaded a SetiBeta for the 498MHz Laptop to play with. 86 hours to completion! It'll drop quickly once it gets going properly - though I don't think it'll be finished by tomorrow night.
Forgot about the validation though for the one this computer just finished - should have gotten a cache of them before I started. Never mind - will get a nice boost once they start validating!

Hi all,
Here's the final (72 hours) stats results for the S Club Crunch:
SAP:
Start credits: 537,624.01
End credits: 595,296.01
= 57,672 (=801 credits per hour)
SETI:
Start credits: 13,566,819.44
End credits: 13,647,157.76
= 80,338.32 (=1,115.81 credits per hour)
SETI Astropulse:
Start credits: 52,425.65
End credits: 52,607.62
= 181.97 (=2.53 credits per hour)
SIMAP:
Start credits: 256,144.69
End credits: 276,762.96
= 20,618.27 (=286.36 credits per hour)
Sztaki:
Start credits: 110,298.98
End credits: 110,416.45
= 117.47 (=1.63 credits per hour)
Total S Club Crunch credit generation (over last 72 hours): 158,928.03 (= 2,207.33 credits per hour), which puts us closer to achieving the #1 ranking for the 3 main S Club projects: SAP, SETI and SIMAP.
Total Team credit generation (over last 72 hours): 231,075.83 (= 3,209.39 credits per hour).
So, the S Club Crunch generated approx 2/3rds of our entire credits over the 3 days.
(More credits will of course come after, as some WU's won't be validated until one/two days after the Crunch closes).
Not a bad result....well done to all who participated...!
regards,
Tim
