"Most Users Online" record

Hi all,

The record for the most users online has been at 38 for the last month or so.

So, how abouts, with our ever increasing forum and team membership, that we lay down a monthly challenge ?

Am trying to keep it very simple, but basically, the idea would be that for one time a month, we try and get every forum member to log onto the forum.

And with the Mega Mini-Summer Crunch ending this coming weekend, I'd like to start this off by suggesting that come Sunday 30th July, we try and log on sometime around the "god-slot time" (between about 6 and 8 pm).

And let's see if we can get to 40 members online at once!!

You ought to reset that, the general opinion at the time was that most of those 38 were bots

Hi John,

To be honest, I didin't think then that they were bots, simply because: some of the time, we have upwards of 100+ simultaneous accesses to the forum, mainly from Google.

More likely is that we had a good few registered members stop by on that day, and by chance a high-ish number of guests as well. Net result: a goodly total of "users" all online at once.

TBH: I don't sit on every idea for too long. Too many other things to do in life !

But every now and then, a simple idea pops up in my head and I post it onto the forum to see if it's of interest. That's what happened in this case - the email was sent before I'd thought of it....!

Sometimes, it works, even if only for a short while...

I was logged in when the 38 happened and watched the users online number increase from about 5 upto 38 within about 5 minutes, all of them guests.
At the time I was sure it was bots simply because of the speed they appeared but I suppose it could've been real people, like our friends and rivals from lookers all piling in at the same time to look at something.

A bot on phpbb boards only shows up as 1 bot so if 100 google bots were doing there stuff it would just register as 1 guest

If you look at the memberslist and then click on sort by "last time visited" you'll see there's about 26 who MIGHT have been involved (obviously people who last logged on BEFORE this time on 9th Aug cannot have been involved...!).

So if all 26 logged on around the time, that only makes up just over half the numbers involved.....

Reckon we've been googled and guested again....!

The obvious

a few bots indexing and some trying to be naughty and the rest are guests taking a look at the forums

GoogleBots.
Lots of bots and all using different IP addresses.
All starting 66.249.73
All googlebots and with them having different ip's they are seen as different users.

It just makes the "most people online" bit a bit useless really.

Perhaps the stats should be changed to just record registered members who are online.....

Can't be done with out adding a Mod, the Mod in question is not an official Mod yet is still in testing and can break forums, so not worthwhile putting it on to the forum in case it breaks everything.

Just wait a few months though and all will be fine
