Upgrade to latest BOINC Version now

Post by UBT - Halifax-lad »

If you have any BOINC client other than 5.8.x, then now is the time to upgrade

The current stable version is 5.8.16 and works quite well

A number of projects are gearing upto dropping any older BOINC clients which means if you have a older version then you will not be able to get any work from certain projects very soon.

I have got 2 PC's doing CPDN and no problems here.

Fellie, I assume you have closed Boinc Manager using the "Exit" option from the top menu bar, you then copy the extracted files to your Boinc Root Directory, then restart the manager !

The way I did it was;

1) Download the RAR file to your desktop. Exit BOINC!
2) Right click the file and left click on 'Extract Here'
3) You'll get roughly 15 files unpacked onto your desktop. Select all these, but not the original RAR file, and 'Copy'
4) Then go through 'My Computer', 'Local Disk', 'Program Files' and find your 'BOINC' folder.
5) Open your 'BOINC' folder, find a bit of space and 'Paste' the files there.
6) Restart BOINC and you should be running Crunch3rs v6.1.0 app!

Running fine after a reboot...  reported as crunchers 6.10 in "messages", but as 5.10.45 still in "help - about" . I take it this is normal :S

Perfectly normal, fellie! :D

If you haven't restarted BOINC since the first time after you 'upgraded' then look at 'Messages'. You should see, just before the projects start, a line telling you that you've changed from your original version to v6.1.0 8)

Now i think about it.. What if any advantage does the x64 6.x.x version give you? As the projects you run determine if they can run x64-bit or not..  :?:

The x64 boinc app can still run x86 projects, however the x86 Boinc cannont run x64 apps.

So if you use a x64 OS you need the x64 Boinc.

Correct, don't even go there with the Linux version, been trying to get my head around this all day, every time I copy the two files into the Boinc dir it still says its V5.10.45 ?
Oh well at least it still works !!

just had a quick look over at boinc ..

http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php

6.1.12 released .. " (MAY BE UNSTABLE - USE ONLY FOR TESTING) " :D

I wonder how this compares to crunch3rs 6.1.0.32 ?

Or did they just take all the good bits

Glad I followed your link before I berated you for not looking properly and seeing that the v6.1.0 was for Linux only!  :D

They've added the Windoze v6.1.12 version today! Hope it's not an early April Fool!

I'm not sure how close the official version is to Crunch3rs, have to see if it's mentioned on his site.

Well I took the plunge and loaded the latest 6.1.12 on the Vista PC and it looks like they have fixed the auto start issue Image

Oh yeah been running for about 14hrs with no problems, the only thing I did notice when I upgraded was none of the counters would work until I shut the manager down completely and re-started.

k, I installed over Crunch3rs just to see, and the benchmark dhrystone is 5500 , slightly lower than reported on 9500 on crunch3rs ..

Is this likely to make a difference?

Might just have been different projects though ..
