Thanks Mike, I have been checking ebay without much luck. although many inverters are compatible in many systems, without the part No I have no way of knowing and most seem to list the laptop model not the part No.
I have messaged a few sellers to see if they can give me the part No so will wait and see.
Just ripped my inverter out and with the part No have now found 2 used ones for sale, fingers crossed nobody else wants them.
You should expect an inverter to last several years, and a shop will know the act better than you.
The first and second person you speak to will tell you the warranty is for 1 year, the owners will know better.
The act applies to Tesco as a friend found, his TV went pop after 18 months, and he was given the run around.
When he threatened legal action he was put through to the relevant department who sent the paperwork to fill in, result 1 new TV.

Thanks for that John, wish I'd known that a few years ago as I had a TV from Tecso's go poof one week after the warranty was up and after months of arguing gave up.
As for the laptop, it is about 6 years old now and has done a great many hours of service with no problem I couldn't fix, Sony wanted £700 to repair dry solder joints on the Ram seatings, so I fixed it myself.
Though I have no complaints about their products I will not buy Sony again as they do everything they can to make sure you have to pay them through the nose for any repairs and refuse point blank to sell you the parts.
Oh well, if I can get the part on ebay it will take me about 30 minutes to fix so in the meantime I have it hooked up to a monitor so it can keep on crunching.
