Really like it, though looking at both, they do seem to promote a 'space' theme - probably harking back to when BOINC was just SETI and Einstein. How you could incorporate everything that BOINC is involved in (Biology, physics, maths for example) might be a bit too much to have in a single logo (I seem to have talked myself out of any change now ).

I can see what you mean about the space theme, let me have a play and see what I come up with, I'll try to get the background to look like a network of some sort, maybe just nodes with lines between them?
So after a little messing around and being unable to come up with a network node map type image that I liked, I decided to try something different, here's the result
Very nice logo, bright, clean and specific. Thanks for the work.
I like the network type map although I think it would be better slightly if it was sort of UK centered but stretching out to cover the rest of the world. A little like airplane flight maps from a specific airport? To imply that we start here but we crunch in these destinations?
So, I've had a little tinker with the image and this is what I have so far, not as bright as before but the lines I would like to put on the "map"
wouldn't show up with the white background.
Thanks for the new logo's....certainly gives us something to think about (ie changing the logo).
Personally, I prefer the white background version at the moment, if only because the BOINC logo stands out more...on the darker background, it sorts of blends in so, only UK and Team stand out.
You don't need to change anything for now and perhaps, let's see what other ideas people can suggest - otherwise, you'll be tweaking and changing logo's for the next year !!
(And of course, if any one else wants to try out their creative skills on this, then feel free...)
I had the same thought about the Boinc logo, leave it with me, I'll try to lighten it up a bit.
Once something like this gets in my head, I'm like a dog with a bone.
An an option (and perhaps some might prefer), can you reduce the size of the "world projection" (in the grey) such that it looks smaller and then make the blue "UK" graphic a little smaller so that all of the UK (inc more of Scotland and also the southern/western parts of Wales/Devon/Cornwall) also fit into the height of the banner.
My idea is partly nicked from the Man from U.N.C.L.E. logo perhaps
where the foreground circle is replaced by the image of UK - no need for a man in his suit+gun either !!
I've tried to make the lines terminate in the rough location for some Boinc projects, couldn't find the locations for all of them so added a couple to make it look a bit better, most are in the US so it was a bit lopsided.

Hi Will
I REALLY like this...although my one (minor) criticism, is that with the UK now just a red blob, how would it look if it was reduced in size by 50% or even 75% - as the current logo is used in/on a number of project websites, where we don't have "control" of the size (as their websites scales the image to fit their own page design).
But as I say, that's a minor thing and there's no reason to say that this is the final version, as it could be used in a number of different ways, depending on where it was going to be seen.
Oh - I've just had another thought - could others think that this is a plan for the mass emigration of everyone post-Brexit (showing destination cities)? Or maybe it's a "tip of the hat" to the last few scenes in the film "War Games" showing the flight paths of all the ICBM's ?? (either incoming to UK or outgoing to nuke the rest of the world !!)
Increased the amount of network links to include links between projects and increased the size of UK to make it more visible when the image is reduced in size.
So after looking at this logo for a while a couple of things started to niggle me, I've adjusted the UK spacing to reveal more of the union jack and I've changed the weight of the website url text, re-aligned things and this is the result.

Hi Will
Sorry - should have replied earlier.
I can't think of a way to improve on that so, if no-one else objects, I'd be more than happy to adopt this as the new Team logo.
Unless I hear to the contrary, (from other members) I'll look to introduce this as of 1st Jan 2017, across all the projects that I have any control over.
