Hi everyone, my missus has a old xp desktop that I want to get back online .. I am connecting it vir a LAN with a Ethernet cable.. When I connect it to the router, it says it's connected but when I use explorer or Firefox browsers they don't connect for some reason..

I have googled it and followed instructions to try and connect  

Any ideas pleasepleaseplease

Hi Naon,

No expert on routers and browsers so a few (possibly stupid) ideas:

Are the browsers set up to use a proxy?

Is the router set up to accept wired connections and pass them along to the outside world?

Do you have a second Ethernet port on the router that you can try? Or another cable? I don't know how it detects that the cable is connected but it may not sense all the connections.

Can you ping addresses directly from a command port on the PC?

The router will except the Ethernet and pass it on thru to the outside world .. And no I am not using proxy .. Also the computer only has one port .. I will tryand use another Ethernet cable on the PC .. When I click on the LAN it says that it is sending out but got nothing returned off the net

Don't know nothing about pinging .. I have two other pcs connected on the network .. One wired and one on the wifi

Hi Naon,

Some things to check:

1) Is the PC set to get an IP address from the router automatically ?
Go to Control Panel > Network Connections then RIGHT click on Local Area Connection. A new box will pop up and in the General tab, scroll down to Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), highlight it and then click on Properties.

Click on the following:
Obtain an IP address automatically
Obtain DNS server address automatically

This will then ensure the PC gets an IP address from the router and this should allow you to have internet access.

2) Another thing to do, AFTER the above, is to go to the admin screen of the router, using another PC - usually it's http://192.168.0.1 - and see if the router shows the wife's PC as being connected. (Obviously, if the router shows 2 PC's connected, then it is !!)

Hi Naon,

In the "Run" box from the Start "button", type "cmd" (without the quotes.

A new screen will then appear with something like the following:

Microsoft Windows XP etc
(C) Copyright etc

C:\Documents and Settings>


So, just type the following:

ping -t 8.8.8.8

and then hit return.

You should get a response along the lines of:

Pinging 8.8.8.8 with 32 bytes of data

And every second or so after, a response, which if the PC *IS* connected, will be:

Reply from 8.8.8.8: bytes=32 time= etc etc

This means you do have an internet connection.

If you get "No response", then the internet connection isn't working.
