Hi all,
I've joined this challenge on behalf of the UK BOINC Team...
As mentioned the crunch starts on 16th Nov and runs until 22nd Nov....so, just a week's worth of crunching required....
Let's hope we can generate a few credits, eh ???
regards
Tim

Since I've already got six cores crunching WCG part-time, I'll definitely be doing my part. 8)

I just connected ok, maybe just a brief glitch?

I'm still getting the same...
and I can't remove ( button greyed out ) or re-add the project ( already added ).
It may be firewall related then, I've recently started getting prompts for other non-boinc apps... ( but all other boinc apps seem AOK )

Just a thought, but are you using the latest BOINC manager (6-12-34)?
Either way, it might be worth reinstalling BOINC manager in case it has become corrupt.

Yeah I'm up to date... it must've beebn broken for some time actually, it thought it had resource share of 100 instead of 0 on the site, which was changed some time ago...
Bah, though it was working with eFMer BoincTasks, but same error...
Ditto after a re-install

I've attempted to manually remove the project, which seemed to work OK. And re-added it, which seemed to work ok.
But still the same problem as above.
Any ideas?
Can I find the update address/URL somewhere to ensure that I can ping it? ( I can access the WCG website AOK from a browser... )

Is it just one project or all of them ?
Have you any completed WU's to send in ?
If not I would DETACH from the project, exit and restart Boinc Manager.
Failing that a RESET of the project "may" help.

It's just WCG, all others are AOK.
I've tried resetting, but that just hits the same problem.
What do you mean by detach?
The "remove" button is greyed out for this and other projects ( why would that be? )
I've tried to manually remove WCG*, and re-add it, which *seemed* to go OK, but still hits this problem.
*i.e. remove/edit various xml files in the boinc folder that seemed appropriate

Hi Barrie, sorry for the late reply.
This screen shot shows the detach tab. Perhaps yours is a newer version. You could always download Boinc from the WCG home page and see if that works any better.
Also -
what exactly do the error messages say when there is no communication ?
Have you signed in to wcg home page and ensured that all your details are correct and that you are subscribed to active projects.
HCMD and DDDT phase 2 are both down atm.
And also are you sure that your windows firewall is not blocking communications to WCG ?
Also is your cache full ? If there is no space for the WCG wu's they will not be downloaded straight away . . .

Ahh, mine says "remove" rather than "detach", but is greyed out anyway.
The error is as above :
10/11/2011 13:07:58 | World Community Grid | update requested by user
10/11/2011 13:08:00 | World Community Grid | Sending scheduler request: Requested by user.
10/11/2011 13:08:00 | World Community Grid | Requesting new tasks for CPU and NVIDIA GPU
10/11/2011 13:08:01 | World Community Grid | Scheduler request failed: HTTP error 0
It was working fine, and is still working fine on my other PC, so maybe a local firewall issue...

Older BOINC managers say "detach", the latest says "remove" as you say.
When BOINC manager shows World Community Grid on screen, click so it goes blue. Is "remove" still greyed out, or could you remove it?
Just a stab in the dark.

It still stays greyed out...
Just rumbled it thanks to eFMer BoincTasks showing me a message "This project must be removed using the account manager website" - I must've added it ages ago using gridrepublic...
Re-added... and still get the http error 0
I think I'll give up

Sorry to hear that Barrie, but I`ve run out of ideas too.

Well, having ruled out everything else that I/we can think of, I'm assuming it's a firewall/network issue, which I have no control over.
It'd be nice if it was possible to duplicate the request that is generating the error, but I've no idea how to go about that.

Hi Barrie,
I've just caught the end of this "tale" so, I thought I'd put my two-pennarth in...
1) If your PC and this "other" PC share the same router connection, then I doubt it is a firewall issue in the router.....which implies it might be down to some security/firewall software on the specific PC - so, as a check, I'd disable these and then give it another go.
2) It could be that a specific port (required to upload/download project data) is blocked, either by security/anti-virus software or an issue with the networking protocols on the PC itself. If you have access to the router admin page, you can use your "other" PC to monitor the ports used when the "other" PC contacts a project.
Then all you need do is to fire up this PC and monitor what happens to the port accesses....
3) Port 80 is used for web browsers, so accessing the website is no guarantee that you can upload/download stuff, as they will use different "ports".....
You can download free network monitoring software that shows you directly (in a small windowed screen) what is happening, in real time, with your ports....this might help you to figure this out, *IF* 1) and 2) haven't worked....if I can remember the right software, I'll update this thread with a URL link....
UPDATE: Try this Windows software (it's free !!)
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/cports.html
Once it's running, and you set the Menu command "Options> Auto Refresh > Every 1 Second", then you can monitor your ports.
Then start up BOINC Manager and then once it's got going, click on the WCG in the "Projects" tab and then quickly switch windows to the CurrPorts window.
WCG uses port 80 for normal use and port 443, when it communicates for data....so, you are looking in the "Remote Host Name" for "grid.worldcommunitygrid.org".
Also: If you can use the Windows Command Prompt, then try the command:
ping 198.20.8.241
and see if it returns any results....
regards
Tim

The pcs are on different networks, and I don't have access to the routers for the problematic one.
Ping and tracert don't seem to work for any external address.
If I do an update and watch CurrPorts all I see is the boincclient doing something on port 8080.
Oh well, thanks a lot for trying to help sort it out, and good luck with the challenge!

Yup - we made a good effort.
Sadly, although I was crunching WCG for 2+ weeks before the Challenge, I was away for the weekend and hence I wasn't able to leave my PC's on their own crunching away.....so, I was hoping some of my credits might have been awarded during the challenge, even if they weren't crunched during the exact period.
Even so, a quite good effort has been made.....perhaps for the next WCG Challenge, we might get a few more people involved....as it's easy to email everyone in our WCG Team, via their website.
Such a shame that BOINC projects websites haven't followed their example....

Tim
