BOINC is going to evolve

Thought I would share this with you all, if you go to the URL in the quote it will show you a example of what it will look like.

We can all thank WCG for this :wav:
BOINC is working with World Community Grid (WCG)
to develop a new interface for the BOINC Manager.
This new interface is intended to be more appealing
and comprehensible to non-technical participants.

The current interface will continue to be available as an "advanced" option; users will be able to toggle between the simple and advanced interfaces.

A mockup of the interface is here:
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/images/BOINCSimpleGUI.pdf

Please reply to this list with any comments or questions about the appearance and/or feature set. We hope to do couple of iterations of design review and then start working on the implementation in 2-3 weeks.

WCG is contributing considerable design and programming resources
to the development of this interface.

This work will benefit all BOINC-related activity, not just WCG.
It's a big step in moving BOINC participation beyond the world
of computer nerds, out into the general PC-owning population.
The resulting code will be released under LGPL, like the rest of BOINC.
The new interface will be "skinnable" - there will be a generic BOINC skin,
as well as one for WCG, BBC, and anyone else.

WCG is eager to involve the entire BOINC community in
the design process

Thanks for the link.

Graphics seem to be A4 rather than 4X3. Hopefully, they can get all the info on 1 screen rather than have to scroll down.

I have faith in D.Anderson & Co. as well as with WCG, they will ensure everything is fine and works correctly.

Its nice of WCG to put a lot of there resources into this as well, things should progress at a quick pace I think once they get going as they seem to have bags of money and lots of technical experience.

Looks like WCG have signed for the death of UD, as once BOINC is completed it will look very much like UD. That is what is stopping a lot of users on the UD Client from WCG switching to BOINC.

I love the idea of having it skinable, also at least the classic version will still be in there with the new version, so anyone who doesn't want to see a graphical interface doesn't have to.

Will with any it will luck pull more people to it once completed, am going to like testing this one :!:

The creation of the BOINC GUI has begun, WCG have been uploading files for the last few days in order to create the next version of BOINC

Blog/Image

The best thing is the new version of BOINC will be skinnable using XML files, which means any designers amongst us could create a team skin for the BOINC client once it is released

BOINC gains CPU capability detection

No more 3rd party programs to try and work out what instructions the CPU uses. It really works, this is from BOINC on my machine

BOINC needs this type of change as it becomes more popular as more and more people will be wanting to crunch but don't know much about computers and installing software.

The more user friendly the better. As long as they keep the advanced setting for me 8)

The advanced setting will always be there just hidden in the background, select an option and the advanced section appears and the simple GUI goes away
