Hi all,

Just read an interesting story here

about UCL installing a new "Dell clustered super computer" featuring:
a main distributed memory HPC (High Performance Computing) cluster consisting of 2560 processor cores based on Intel Dual-core technology, an SMP cluster comprising 96 processor cores and 192TB high-performance storage
So, your mission, Rockinfroggi, should you decide to accept it...is to secretly immerse yourself into the infrastrucutre of UCL, gain access to this system, and install a UBT-registered BOINC client attached to every current BOINC project. As usual, the secretary will deny all knowledge of your mission. This message will self destruct in 8 seconds. Good luck Froggi.

Yup - you gotta be a worrried IT Manager with so many "parts" involved, that assuming say 1% failure rate, that still means that at least 25 "cores" will go wrong....

Hmmm.....wonder what Currys would charge for an extended warranty on that lot...

Mind you I still have to laugh when not too long ago, I took my mum to a Comet store as she needed a new kettle. It cost about £19 and the sales assistant asked her if she wanted an extended warranty for a further £9.99....

She gave him a cold look and said if it didn't work to start with, she'd bring it back and box his ears for selling her a "dud"....and then she capped it by saying that if the store was so good by selling high quality merchandise, what was it doing selling items that NEEDED an extra warranty...!

She got no answer to that !!

regards

Tim

Oh yeah - I forgot.

Never mind. I'll wait for the computers to take over the world and cheer myself up with a new avatar. :D
