have a celeron with a asrock motherboard in it .cpu celeron d 29ghz oc   chipset 865g recent replacment manual says supports hypertheading but to my understanding it s only p4 with hyper threading Is it posable to replace cpu to p4 the board has integrated shared graphics don't expect it to be as good big brother would like some improvement in it at resonable cost                                                                                                                              Zooooooooooooooooooooooom

Hi Douglas, you need to give us more information on the mobo and socket type before anyone can advise you as to the best solution.
Also what is your budget to do the improvements?

Hi Douglas,

A Celeron D is a single core CPU that comes in either a 478 pin version or a 775 pin version.

In either case, you can remove the Celeron and replace with a P4 that supports HT and has the same number of pins as the Celeron. (Some early P4's don't have HT so check first).

Note: The P4 is not very efficient, so you may need to replace the fan/cooler as well, as the P4 gets hotter, so needs more cooling.

Edit: If you have a 775 pin Celery, then you may be able to fit a Core 2 Duo in there instead. These have got 2 REAL core, which the HT versions don't have...!

Also note: If you change the CPU, you may have to re-install Windows, due to the different physical specifications of the various CPU's. Sometimes, this is a full re-install...or it might just a few driver changes. In either case, make a full backup of any important stuff beforehand.

You can also get an Asrock mobo that will accept Celeron's, P4' and Core 2 Duo chips, so it depends on the mobo model!

If it will take a Core duo then a recent price drop on the quad cores £168 would make great sense.
Might need more memory if you go this route though.
As for graphics if your only crunching with it then no need to worry about it being on board.
Gaming is different and without knowing which board you have we won't be able to recommend anything.
