World Community Grid Crunch 25th-27th May 2007

Never sure if these start at 00:01 on the Friday or 23:59. Doesn't really matter I suppose - anyone can start/finish whenever they like!

Initial Stats

This is just a reference position - won't be updated again until Friday. I've got a lot of data on this project so there's 4 graphs - 2 big, 2 small. The larger graphs show data from last year, but are harder to see short term progress. The 2 'spikes' on the 'Full Daily' are from the previous 2 crunches we've had so it would be nice to better them - I'm sure that as we've had such a large increase in members it'll be a cinch.

The 2 'short' graphs will more easily show increases in output and total.

Aims

We should get 1,000,000 before the crunch starts so the obvious aim is to get into the top 100!
After that I'm up for someone to give a target if we want one! Just as much as possible I suppose.

WCG use a different system of credits so in order to keep things relatively simple I'll use BOINCStats. Strangely WCG list us at 263 in the world for 'points' generated, but we're at 101 in converted BOINCStats - I'm sure someone will explain the difference! http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/team/ ... 9TGC4G1RP1

Another thing worth pointing out is that at the moment we're all listed as 'International' but after a bit of 'digging of ribs' the project will list teams 'Nationally' in the next few weeks so we can't really aim for a national or UK target yet.

Overtake targets are...

Code: Select all

As of 19:00 20th May 2007
                                      Current    Diff        RAC

 97       Rutgers University          1,066,076 ( 84,054)   2,148
 98       Dinosaur Comics             1,064,863 ( 82,841)  13,852
 97       JDH CC inc.                 1,029,605 ( 47,583)     199
 98       IBM Austin                  1,022,054 ( 40,032)   4,126
 99       TKWSN                       1,013,539 ( 31,517)   4,724
100       Microsoft                   1,007,111 ( 25,089)   2,531
101       UK BOINC TEAM                 982,022             4,164
Looking at the above it seems that getting into the top 100 is going to be a bit harder to get than I thought but at this stage all targets are going to get harder!

263rd place refers to the whole WCG system including non-BOINC crunchers

I assume for points generated that includes the UD thing that can be used instead of Boinc.
They show 3 rankings based on time/results/points but points is the one used mine are

Total Run Time (y:d:h:m:s) (Rank) 1:319:00:05:58 (#7,079)
 Points Generated (Rank) 1,193,253 (#1,814)
 Results Returned (Rank) 6,659 (#998)
but on Boinc I am around position 720

Edit too b slow typing Halifax got in first

There are two different clients - the UD client which earns certain credits per WU and the BOINC client that earns credits per WU.

BOINCstats only shows the "equivalent" value of the BOINC client contribution (where IIRC, I WCG credit = 7 BOINC credits)

BOINCstats has no knowledge of the UD client credits and hence cannot take these into account.

Hence our BOINCstats credits is less than our overall WCG credits.

The majority of our WCG crunchers use the BOINC client - there's perhaps 20 or so UD based members.

WCG weekend crunch has now started. Those of you who have forgotten or didn't know you can still join in!

I've reduced the targets as we're only trying to get as high as possible for a short crunch. As soon as WCG list National teams I'm sure we'll start to put in a more concerted effort.

I've noticed a minor problem compared to previous crunches in that the quorum is 3 and not 1 as in recent crunches. So there may be a delay in getting your credits. As there's a 2 week deadline other people in your quorum may not be as quick as you'd like but they'll all verify eventually.

As predicted we got the 1 Million during the week and we should get to #100 on Saturday. JDH have switched off so we might stomp them Sunday - just depends on how many people join in and how fast we can get the credits verified.

Code: Select all

                                      Total     (diff)       RAC (change)
 98       TKWSN                       1,039,031 ( 23,627)
 99       JDH CC inc.                 1,029,768 ( 14,364)
100       Microsoft                   1,018,184 (  2,780)
101       UK BOINC TEAM               1,015,404             5,083(0)
WCG list us at 259 in the world for 'points' generated.

Just listing 'short' graphs as the 'full' graphs are a bit big for a daily update. They are being updated in the first post though.

For Human Proteome Folding - Phase 2 the quorum is 15. The deadline for FightAIDS@Home appears to be 10 days.
WU's past the deadline are reissued asap, with a day or less deadline, so if there are any no returns in a quorum you do not normally have to wait longer than a day past the deadline. Also if you get any short deadline ones you will get credit for them almost straight away

I've just done the same as I seemed to be getting too many of them and will obviously not see the benefit until long after the crunch.

I thought of that in advance and downloaded a big cache on Monday, and suspended all week, then unsuspended and started crunching last night  :angel13:

Well actually only on one of my two computers

My cache seems to have gone to pot lately, on most projects I'm just getting one WU at a time and on smaller projects like PG I might get half a dozen and not the multiple pages I used to get?
Checked Bam and my prefs are still the same.

WCG weekend crunch has now started. Those of you who have forgotten or didn't know you can still join in!

We overtook Microsoft as predicted. Today's output shot up by nearly double usual amount and I suspect it'll go higher once the validations come through more regularly.

Our best ever score by over 4000!

Code: Select all

                                      Total     (diff)    Gain        RAC (change)
 98       TKWSN                       1,042,028 ( 20,507) 3,120
 99       JDH CC inc.                 1,029,768 (  8,247) 6,117
100       UK BOINC TEAM               1,021,521                      5,300 (+217)
101       Microsoft                   1,019,840 ( -1,681) 4,461

For graphs - see above.

We just managed to overtake JDH to take us into world 99th place. There's a chance we can get TKWSN with pending credits and credits from today - it'll be close though! We'll find out tomorrow on the final update.

Code: Select all

                                      Total     (diff)    Gain      RAC (change)
 98       TKWSN                       1,044,742 ( 14,050) 9,577
 99       UK BOINC TEAM               1,030,692                     5,665 (+582)
100       JDH CC inc.                 1,029,768 (    924) 15,288
101       Microsoft                   1,021,701 ( -8,991) 11,771

Produced 15,288 over weekend

I guess our objective was achieved, I still have a few to finish off plus all my pending credits.

This is one of the more worthwhile projects yet seems to have been one of the quieter crunches for some reason.

I'll probably do this on a more regular basis if and when they start a new cancer project as their email suggested.

Hopefully, once they go with 'National' teams, we'll be able to drum up a bit more interest.

Gary.
WCG is one of the top five Boinc projects in the world (not even counting its massive ud output) but is one of our worst ranked ones.

This crunch may well get us another 2 world places when all the credits have gone through but we will need that just to stay in the top 100 as 2 teams lower down are moving fast, probably more arrivals from "Grid".

When the UK rankings arrive we may be top 3 or 4 and that might  encourage a bit more crunching.

Final results

Despite having our best ever day yesterday with 14,437 it wasn't quite enough to overtake TKWSN. It's possible that we have a few 'in the bank' to overtake them during the week but it will mean that a few more people will have to stay with the project to keep the RAC high enough to keep us ahead.

Despite being a relatively quiet weekend, we've done our best ever 2/3 crunch.

Well done all who competed.

Code: Select all

                                      Total     (diff)    Gain      RAC (change)
 98       TKWSN                       1,048,546 ( 3,471)  14,050
 99       UK BOINC TEAM               1,045,129                     6,485 (+1,501)
100       JDH CC inc.                 1,029,768 (-15,361) 29,725
101       Microsoft                   1,023,545 ( -8,991) 11,771

Produced 29,725 over the weekend.
For total graphs - see first post.

For comparison

Xtremlab over the same period produced 24,048 credits.
Einstein multicrunch produced 19,009.
Primegrid multicrunch produced 16,068.
