Labour targets Distributed Computing

Minister warns of surge in computers running 24 hours a day.

Patrick Wintour: Political editor

Thursday March 29, 2007

The government has launched an outspoken attack on the distributed computing community and it's various projects.

Environment Minister Ian Pearson warned yesterday that at the current rate of growth this phenomenon will, by the year 2010 be unsustainable and will have increased the demand on our National Grid by upto one third.

For the time being, said the minister we are hoping participants will be sensible and limit the time these projects run to the normal working day.

Though tougher measures are not expected to be implemented at once it was hinted that if there is not a significant improvement in the situation by the end of the year then further action could be taken.

When pressed for information as to what form this action might take the minister read the following statement.

'As this is a world wide phenomena and most of the projects do not fall within UK jurisdiction we will be looking at limiting team memberships to a maximum of one hundred members. This we feel would even out the competition and encourage the less devoted members to abandon the projects altogether.

As it would be impossible to target individual members we are looking to make team founders responsible for their members actions by encouraging them to limit their activity to eight hours a day.
Fines could be issued to founders unwilling to enforce these rules.

Oh no... that's really bad....what am I going to do.....?

First idea is to move to somewhere outside UK jurisdiction. Somewhere that approves of using vast amounts of energy on wasteful tasks.....OK, so I'm off to America... Just need some further member donations and I can get myself a nice pad in sunny California.

Then is the question of the Team name....can't keep calling it the UK BOINC Team, if it's not in UK.....so a single letter change and we'll be the US BOINC Team.... 8)

But then every team member is going to have to move as well......can't leave you all behind can I......

And as for limiting Team member numbers to 100.....that WILL apply to us until I've moved....so, for now, I'll split the Team up into  groups of around 75 (to allow a little growth !) - but how best to implement this ???? Any ideas.

regards

Tim

BURP has been sold to Microsoft Corporation and will be renamed to "Microsoft 3D Online". For the future this has a few minor consequences, mainly pricing: Render of 1 session: $2 Render of 10 sessions: $19 Or a monthly fee of $50 for any number of sessions Also our client now requires a genuine installation of MSN Messenger and Outlook Express to work

Might I make a suggestion?

If you were to stay put (America is fine for a holiday but could you really live there?) and instead of breaking the team into groups you could consolidate all members credits into one member, say Rockinfroggi for example!!!

It might be best for you to keep your own credits just for appearances sake.

This way the team would have plenty of room to grow and having such a small user base would exempt us from investigation.

Failing this, you could always just shoot the Frog

OMG, I'm so hurt, see what happens? you try to put a smile on someones face and you end up turning them into a bunch of foaming mouthed frog killers.

Blow this for a game of soldiers, I'm off to my mums for my Sunday roast blue bottle and Yorkshire gnat.
