Is it idiot proof (I take it Intel is pentium so it will not work on AMD) and how much difference does it make to completion times?

Read the forum over there for all the info you will need about this, also try the auto-installer that picks the best app for you

Can anyone remind me how to install simon's code ? I forgot plus it downloads as a file I can't open.

I can't find anything on the lunatics site and the auto installer has gone, crunch's downloads don't  load as they say they are

The lunatics apps usually come in 7zip format, you can download 7zip from here

When you've extracted the files, there'll be a FILES_TO_INSTALL directory, stop boinc (and backup if you want) and just copy all the files from the FILES_TO_INSTALL directory into the C:\Program Files\BOINC\projects\setiathome.berkeley.edu directory (assuming you have boinc installed in C:\Program Files\BOINC)
then just restart boinc

Thought I'd check the project folder just to make sure, and they're in there.
