How do you update BOINC Manager in Linux Mint? The software manager in Mint installs a really old version, 7.9.3. It's never given me a problem so far but at some point I would like to try a newer version. No clue how to do it in Linux without trashing the current setup.

Possibly there is a problem with the BOINC installation itself.
It would probably be easier just to upgrade to the latest version, which you can do with this PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:costamagnagianfranco/boinc
sudo apt-get update

Will that work or is there a better way? My concern is that Software manager installs boinc manager in one place and some other method is going to install a second version somewhere else.

That may well work, although I see that it's an unofficial / untrusted package i.e. there's no way to verify what has been compiled into that package.

This page below suggests that 7.16 is still 'in development' for Linux. I'd just leave it, unless you experience a problem.

Just looked at that link you gave and see the boinc manager versions are even older than what I have. The recommended version at that page for Linux is 7.4.22.

I also see this:

These versions may not be current. We recommend that instead you install BOINC using a package manager, run it using Docker, or use a bootable ISO image.

Yeah, I noticed that too - from 2014! I suppose that Software Manager in Mint is a package manager, so they pull in more recent versions over time. I've never tried docker.

When I installed Mint on my Xeon box for a previous Sprint, I used the "built-in" Software Manager to install AnyDesk (for remote access) and BOINC Manager.

Despite this being one the of the latest versions of Mint, it installed a "way out of date" version of both (v3.0 for the former and v7.9.3 for the latter).

So, ideally there must be a better way of installing later versions?

BTW: I also found a neat utility that apparently works the same as MSI Afterburner (whch is a GPU over/under clocking program for Windows)...but following the recommended way of installing it on Github, it doesn't seem to work:

Any tips to get this working would be appreciated.

Linux Mint has a new version coming out soon. It's available as beta right now.

I'll wait until the stable version is released and hope that things like newer versions of graphics drivers and boinc manager versions become available with it.

I tried updating Linux kernals with Ukuu before but you really need to know what your doing in Linux or you can screw things up pretty quickly.

What function are you after exactly? I've found that the default nvidia x-server that's installed with the proprietary driver will allow overclocking ... but only for newer cards from my experience. I've been using psensor for temperatures ...

This is how I limit the power to my Nvidia GPUs on Linux:

To adjust power level open terminal and run these 2 commands
sudo nvidia-smi -pm 1
sudo nvidia-smi -pl XXX
replace the XXX part with the watts you want
I do 175 on my 1080ti
which is down from the stock 275 / 280
so the command would be :
sudo nvidia-smi -pl 175
^this doesn't persist through re-boot so you either setup in a script or just run it if you have to reboot manually
i just do it manually
fyi this will set the power level for all your cards at once

I haven't tried it, so I don't know how well it works. I did try Nvidiux but it only works with a single GPU. All my boxes are dual GPU.

It is reduced until reboot. I haven’t figured out how to make it stay at that level after a restart ...

Oh, ok. I have the same issue but I don't reboot that much so not much of an issue.
