Optimised BOINC and project clients

Team view:
Using an optimised client program offers many advantages. In the case of SETI, (the project with the greatest number of 3rd party optimised programs), it allows you to use a client that has been optimised to use the particular "core functions" of your CPU. This then helps you to return results back to the project in less time, allowing your PC to be more efficient. It doesn't neccessarily mean you will receive more credit for each work unit returned - but if you return more work in a given time, then you will receive more total credit per given period of time.

Optimised SETI PROJECT clients:
STOP PRESS: The new SETI Enhanced is nearing the end of being a BETA application. And according to the SETI website, over the course of the next few days and weeks, Enhanced WU's will be released that can be crunched by the NORMAL application. However, the OPTIMISED v4.x clients will not be able to handle these ENHANCED v5.x WU's, so you may now need to consider UNINSTALLING the OPTIMISED v4.x SETI client so that you can crunch the new WU's

Note also that the new ENHANCED WU's take a longer time to crunch and hence may not be suitable for downloading onto an older PC, with a CPU speed of less than 1GHz, simply because it is likely that the WU will take 20 even 30 hours to finish.

In time, new OPTIMISED v5.x ENHANCED clients will become available - seems like a few are already in development. So, probably by the end of May/early June 2006, the OPTIMISED v4.x clients will no longer have many (any?) WU to crunch.

Optimised Einstein PROJECT clients:
Please read the thread below - (there are others!) - this contains live links to the various OPTIMISED applications for Einstein - I would list them here, but they seem to change on an almost daily basis...!:
Akosf read-only thread

Instructions:
Just close BOINC, rename your "original" albert 4.37 exe file to "oldexe" and then copy the correct file into the same Einstein project folder.
Then re-start BOINC and you're away.

Also please read this thread on the Einstein forum.

Optimised BOINC clients:
The BOINC software is available for people to download and compile their own versions.
You can get hold of a replacement BOINC manager (for Windows 98/2000/XP or Linux) here:
Crunch3r: this site now OFFLINE due to Crunch3r closing it down !
Trux: http://www.truxoft.com

This enables you to benchmark at a higher rate, which therefore provides you with a faster client PC, which should enable you to return valid results quicker.

A view from a user who has installled optimised clients:
I was using Crunch3r's optimised SETI application, but have now removed it, as per Crunch3r's wishes NOT to continue using it.
Other optimised clients may become available in time.

Advantages:SETI WU's take less time to complete !
Disadvantages: No graphics (who needs 'em), less claimed credit per WU (each takes less time, so less credit claimed, but not necessarily less credit awarded !)

As such, "optimised" versions of both the BOINC and client software can run faster and more efficiently and are available for specific "flavours" of OS (Windows, Mac, Linux, etc) as well as specific "flavours" of CPU (Intel, AMD, etc).

Some optimised clients also seem to work better on Linux OS, compared to Windows OS, even on the same hardware - so for optimum crunch "power", try installing the BOINC client on a Linux platform.

You can find some resources at the following websites:

Or take a look at some BOINC-specific documentation (which might help)

Or you can read about these optimised software programs here

Please note: These optimised client programs are being updated all the time. As such we cannot take any responsibility if you chose to install such a program which then causes any problems. These links are provided as a courtesy to crunchers and as such, we suggest you back-up your system before installing, so as to minimise the effect of any possible disruption.
