A Bit of Fun
The UK BOINC Team "Crunches"
To crunch or not to crunch? - that is the question !!
The "Crunch sessions" involve nothing more than allowing your PC to
earn credits for specific BOINC projects, (as nominated by the Team), by adjusting
your BOINC client software. This usually happens a few times a year as the Team
is keen to generate increased participation in BOINC. We have found that one way
of achieving this is by developing a "Team spirit", that makes members
feel as though they are part of something bigger !!
By the way - you can join in, without being a member of our Team - the Crunch
is free to anyone to join in !!
And at the end of the period, we publish our Team results, so that you can see
how effective we've been in helping the chosen project....!
What is a "Crunch"?
---------------------------------
The purpose of the Crunch is to have just a little bit of fun!
Basically, we ask team members to voluntarily dedicate themselves to a "Crunch"
whereby as many of the team members dedicate their "PC crunching power"
to just one (or more) chosen projects for a specific period of time.
We first tried this at the end of February 2006: many members accepted the challenge
and crunched solely for SETI@home for a weekend. The results were spectacular
- our daily credit of work returned to SETI went up by around 37% - a fantastic
result.
(Within BOINC Manager, you can manually disable projects and hence crunch just
for a chosen project for a period of time that you choose - it's this function
that you can use to join in with our "Crunch").
So, all we ask that you consider is whether you can spare
a few hours to participate in the "Crunch"
These are the results of the previous Crunches we've already held.

Instructions if you do want to take part:
-----------------------------------------
1) Sometime (two or three days before the START date), make sure you are already
a member of the chosen project - visit our website to see what's been chosen
by the team members.
2) Then set all your other projects to "No new work" as well
as "suspending" them from actually doing any "crunching"
during the specified period.
3) Set the chosen project as the only one able to download any new
work.
4) On/after the END date, you can switch each of your other projects back to "Allow
new work" and "Resume".
If you need further help or you're not sure, please feel free to get in touch
via the Team forum,
where specific instructions concerning these "Crunches" are covered
in the section named "Announcements"
BTW: You don't *have* to participate - if you crunch for a different project(s),
then you need do nothing more. If you crunch for another project, then you may
wish to get involved or not, depending on your mood. There's no need to register
your participation.
There's no obligation - it's just a bit of fun to see if we can "pull together"
just for a while.
In future months, we'll be featuring other projects.
If Team members would like to vote for a project to feature in a Crunch - please
see the Team forum.
