New project: Parlea@home

Post by UBT - Timbo »

Hi all

A new BOINC project has started up recently:

http://parlea.ru/boinctest/

UBT now has a team on this project here:

http://parlea.ru/boinctest/team_display.php?teamid=16

(And thanks to Carl for the heads-up on this project !)

Hi Stephen

I've not had any tasks yet - it seems it is in it's early days, so I suspect (hope?) it ramps them up in due course.

I've left its "Resource share" to 100, while I try to hit some milestones on a few other projects (with lower resource shares set within BOINC Manager).

Hi Stephen

One of my hosts has been able to get some tasks from Parlea, and these took very little time to crunch and I got 21 credits (in total) for the 45 tasks the host completed.

More are available now, so hopefully you've got/had some already?

(But note that the website seems to be a bit flaky as 88 tasks failed to download to this host, due to "http errors").

Don't expect this to be a robust running project. I suspect this is run by a college student on very minimal hardware. It's going to be down more than it's up.

From the website:
The project was created as part of the final qualifying work.

Institute of NUST MISiS, Department of Engineering Cybernetics
Student Dolgov Andrey Andreevich
Scientific Supervisor Associate Professor, Ph.D. Kurochkin Ilya Ilyich
You need to babysit and do a lot of manual work to get any tasks as well as upload them and then report the finished tasks. I only have a goal of 1 million points and then I'm done with this project. It's simply to much work. I'm a quarter of the way to my goal right now.

From the Slack channel for my old team:
coleslaw 19 minutes ago
The guy is running it on a VM with only 20GB or dedicated space. It is a test server to learn how to run a BOINC server before migrating it to something else. I think if he gave it reasonable space, we wouldn't have so many issues but at least he was up front about the limitations.

If you have Discord and are signed up for the BOINCNetwork channel just search for "drus". If you need an invite to join the channel I can probably do that.

HI Carl

Thanks for the heads-up on this project.

As of a couple of minutes ago, the project was not accepting any completed work units AND when it went offline, I've been left with many "Failed downloads".

Code: Select all

Program Host Status
Download server parlea.ru	Running
Upload server parlea.ru	Running
Scheduler parlea Not Running
feeder parlea Not Running
transitioner parlea Not Running
file_deleter parlea Not Running
sample_bitwise_validator (gt_cl)	parlea Not Running
sample_assimilator (gt_cl) parlea Not Running
db_purge parlea Not Running
The admin hasn't even configured the "Commumity Message Boards" making it difficult to actually contact the admin or other users so it is not easy to provide any feedback. And yes it is a "test" project, so there are limitations so that the admin(s) can learn how to set up a good project.

So, everything must be taken at "face value" and I will not be expecting much from this project.

Hi all

The parlea.ru website seems to be totally offline now... :-(

http://parlea.ru - which just shows a "Ubuntu / Apache 2" test page :-(

Hopefully they can restore the site, as I'd just been able to upload some completed tasks...so, I hope they will be able to put it back as it was, from a backup !

Hi guys, we have restored the work of the project www.parlea.ru/boinctest/, now the results are backed up twice a day and there should be no problems with lack of memory. Also we started the first experiment, we need to calculate about 1.5kk of working units., so if it's not difficult for you, resume computing if possible

Hi Carl

I just went to check and the website says:
Not Found
The requested URL was not found on this server.

Apache/2.4.51 (Unix) Server at www.parlea.ru Port 80

There is also a problem with the root domain, http://parlea.ru at their service provider "beget"
This domain is not linked to any directory on the server!

What does it mean, and how do I link it?
Linking domain means mapping it to its directory, thus making the website online. If the domain is not linked, you will be able to view this page only.

If you're the domain owner please link it in the "Sites" section of the control panel.
You can read more here.

If your talking about BOINCstats, the project isn't listed there yet, if ever.

Your stats are here: http://parlea.ru/boinctest/top_users.ph ... &offset=20

The team is at #2 right now: http://parlea.ru/boinctest/top_teams.php

Yup - done - slip of the fingers+brain, when typing :-(

AND edited the website referral URL from parlAa.ru to parlEa.ru !

AND their web server ( http://www.parlea.ru/boinctest/ ) is still giving out "404" errors (as of 5pm GMT today):

Use this address: http://parlea.ru/boinctest
Hi Carl

Basically the admins have not configured their web server correctly so that the "www" is accessible as well as the "non www" URL version, via port 80 (or port 8080 in some cases).

I simply used the www version which is what the default web server *should* use....rather than the shortened version which is the "lazy" version ;-)

That's a *huge* total, in such a short period of time too - so well done Carl.

I've done my little bit, for now...though I've stopped crunching these tasks for the time being, so that I can monitor how well they can manage their project - I had over 300 tasks (with deadlines of 2nd Jan) that were in "limbo" when they had an outage for a few days.

And having checked my account today, I cannot tell how many of these tasks earned credits, or were given 0 credits due to the project server being offline before/after this deadline - as they have deleted all the history of returned work units from my account.

I haven't had any issues with the project in the last 24 hours. The improvements he mentioned in his post in Discord seem to have fixed things. I noticed the number of available tasks got low but went back up again. I'll keep running this project until things go south. Hopefully he keeps things going for a while.

Right now Discord is the only way to find out what the developer is doing.
His most recent post in Discord:
drus — Today at 12:36 PM
Yep, you're right. One of the tasks of the ODLC project is used as a computational application in the current experiment, and it is quite possible that the complexity of the tasks varies greatly. Since parlea is a test project, for now it is important for us to track the behavior of a grid system with a large number of nodes, and the implementation of various computing applications. Including app related to neural networks, is also planned. The main goal is to debug and test a complex grid system from different devices, after which a separate project is planned based on these developments.

We are saving the results of the current experiment and will pass them on to colleagues from Gerasim for analysis.

By the way, the question is, is it a problem that the complexity of the workunits varies greatly? Now I see that some of the invalid responses come with the error 197 (0x000000C5) EXIT_TIME_LIMIT_EXCEEDED, it turns out that the node does not even try to count them and fail the result.

Does anyone know how it could be fixed?

Stats for this project won't be shown on BOINCstats any time soon.
https://www.boincstats.com/forum/11/12882,1#154423

From Willy:
I have decided not to add this project to either BAM! nor the stats. The project is based in Russia and we are in no way certain what the project actually does. Russia is the aggressor in the war in Ukraine and I do not intend to support them. If after the war and proper rehabilitation of Russia the project still exists then the project can be added.

Change my mind.

P.S. I'm aware there are three other active Russia based projects. These have existed for quite some time and have established themselves as trusted projects.
