Hi all
Despite issues with the website (Bad Gateway and other errors) and lack of tasks to crunch, I did get a chance to see where we stand THIS MONTH (as of this evening):
Code: Select all
Rank Name Credit WUs
2506 UK BOINC Team 634,832 117
Our OVERALL TOTAL as of tonight are:
Code: Select all
Rank Name Credit WUs
6090 UK BOINC Team 2,465,219 4,845
This compares to the previous OVERALL TOTAL (as seen a day or so ago) which was:
Code: Select all
Rank Name Credit WUs
6925 UK BOINC Team 1,813,773 4,727
(though presumably some of the "overall total" includes ALL of this months crunching).
Individual stats (as of approx 8pm tonight) are:

I only have two GPUs still on folding@home, given that there was little work coming in and I needed some hosts to be on Linux.
I see that I currently have one GPU active and one dormant / waiting on folding@home.

Hi Damien
I had a GPU task crunching when I went to bed last night and this morning found a CPU task was crunching away - but it seems to be a long one - estimated time to completion is around a day !!
Can't yet get both CPU and GPU tasks running concurrently on FAH - but that's maybe just due to a rise in members requesting tasks. So, am just having to adjust the BOINC preferences so that the GPU is running on either BOINC or FAH.

Tim

I think I may know why work is a bit patchy ...
https://www.tomshardware.com/news/foldi ... s-covid-19
Propelled by average enthusiasts in their shared quest to defeat COVID-19, the Folding@Home network is now pushing out 470 PetaFLOPS of raw compute power. To put that in perspective, that's twice as fast as Summit, the world's fastest supercomputer, making the network faster than any known supercomputer. It's also faster than the top seven supercomputers in the world, combined.
Folding@Home reports that it has seen a 1,200% increase in contributors, with Bitcoin miners also joining the fight, and over 400,000 new volunteers have joined over the last two weeks.

Hi Mark
That's interesting...but which Bitcoin miners are involved?...or do they actually mean GPU cards that were mining Bitcoins and are now crunching on FAH?

Hi Tim,
i think the latter, people that were mining Cryptocoins on GPUs and are now crunching on Folding@home instead.

Hi Mark
Yup - seems about right - given as we've already mentioned in a previous posting recently that Bitcoin miners are not geared up to crunch the same sort of data as BOINC & FAH are doing.

They probably weren't mining bitcoin persay - some other crypto that is ASIC-resistant I presume.
Definitely no point trying to mine Bitcoin with GPUs any time in the last 4++ years.

Hi all
I've at last sorted out the "home page" for our Folding@home Team page...
It was setup a very long time ago, and as such I'd forgotten the password used for the team page. Took me a while to go through the hoops of getting admin access, but that was finally achieved last night.
Have now edited the Team URL on there so it now re-directs to this forum.
We've gained a few new F@h members too, up 13 since the first snapshot of F@h members about a month ago, including some of the "usual crowd".
Stats wise, we're quite some way ahead of TSBT !!

Folding at home has now passed the two exaflops figure -
https://stats.foldingathome.org/os
Summit has still to reach that number
Researchers at the US Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory broke the exascale barrier, achieving a peak throughput of 1.88 exaops—faster than any previously reported science application—while analyzing genomic data on the recently launched Summit supercomputer.
and that's mixed, not pure flops
The ORNL team achieved the feat, the equivalent to carrying out nearly 2 billion billion calculations per second, by using a mixture of numerical precisions. Traditionally, scientific computing has relied on double-precision floating point operations, however, interest in reduced numerical precision has grown in recent years due to breakthroughs in artificial intelligence and machine learning. In this case, researchers were able to implement high-speed single- and half-precision operations to gain additional performance.
https://www.olcf.ornl.gov/2018/06/08/ge ... rcomputer/
Still not a match for total Boinc though - 30.4 exaflops (
https://www.boincstats.com/stats/-1/project/detail/)

HI Mark
I was interested in the bit that says:
Specifically, ORNL researchers modified CoMet to exploit the exceptional Tensor Core matrix multiplication capabilities built into each of the system’s 27,648 NVIDIA Volta GPUs.
These NVidia GPU's are pretty expensive (dependant on the number of active cores, on-board memory etc) and seem to vary in price from a couple of thousand $ to many more '000s of $.
Having nearly 28,000 of them gives a cost of the GPUs alone to be at least $56m...and maybe quite a bit more than that, adding in the costs of the chassis to house them, CPUs, RAM, and lots of leccy to run them and network interfacing to connect them all together.

Tim

I am not going to be running FAH in 2021/2022.
