PrimeGrid's 2018 Challenge Series
Solar Eclipse Challenge
Aug 10 18:00:00 to Aug 13 18:00:00 (UTC)
Make sure only Proth Prime Search LLR (PPS) is selected in the preferences.
ATTENTION: The primality program LLR is CPU intensive; so, it is vital to have a stable system with good cooling. It does not tolerate "even the slightest of errors." Please see this post for more details on how you can "stress test" your computer. Tasks on one CPU core will take ~30mins on fast/newer computers and 2+ hours on slower/older computers. If your computer is highly overclocked, please consider "stress testing" it. Sieving is an excellent alternative for computers that are not able to LLR.
Highly overclocked Haswell, Broadwell, Skylake, Kaby Lake or Coffee Lake (i.e., Intel Core i7, i5, and i3 -4xxx or better) computers running the application will see fastest times. Note that SR5 is running the latest FMA3 version of LLR which takes full advantage of the features of these newer CPUs. It's faster than the previous LLR app and draws more power and produces more heat. If you have a Haswell, Broadwell, Skylake, Kaby Lake or Coffee Lake CPU, especially if it's overclocked or has overclocked memory, and haven't run the new FMA3 LLR before, we strongly suggest running it before the challenge while you are monitoring the temperatures.
Please, please, please make sure your machines are up to the task.
Mike

Hi all
Just as a follow up:
This is a CPU only Challenge, so GPUs won't count towards this Challenges totals.
(Which leaves the GPU free to be crunching for other PrimeGrid tasks or for other projects
)
The Supported platforms:
Windows: 32 bit, 64 bit
Linux: 32 bit, 64 bit
Mac: 32 bit, 64 bit
Deadline: 4 days (up to 30 days)
Recent average CPU time: 1:19:05
Make sure you have selected "Use CPU" wihin your PrimeGrid Preferences on their website, otherwise you won't receive any CPU tasks.
Edit: The Team stats are here:
http://www.primegrid.com/challenge/2018 ... teams.html
And the individual member stats are here:

been bunkering PPS LLR work units for this challenge since yesterday with network off. 40 mins or so to go and we should be off to a reasonable start. CPU only so i can keep my GPU occupied with some manual sieving as well. good luck everyone.

Oh dear. It's only work units downloaded after 1800UTC and completed before the deadline on Sunday that actually count. Bunkering doesn't work for the primegrid challenges.

Hi all
I've just enabled my PCs to join in on this PrimeGrid Challenge.
Make sure you only select the "Proth Prime Search LLR (PPS)" tasks and "Allow CPU tasks" within the PrimeGrid Preferences.
I've just got a few tasks and all seems well.
3 days of solid crunching and with luck we'll do well

Tim

After two and a half hours we're 44th out of 49 but I'm sure it will get better.
One thing I've noted though is that although only 1 of my 4 currently reported tasks has been validated by my wingman I have been credited for all four workunits in the challenge table.

Hi Chris
That seems strange - I have 50 odd tasks validated and credited and 126 that haven't been validated or issued with credits yet.
The quorum is set at 2, so, until the wingman returns a validated task, I didn't think credit would be awarded.
Credits seem to be about 160 per validated task and the tasks I've returned ths far seem to be taking about 7,200 seconds each (around 2 hours) though some have taken just over 6,000 seconds.
I looked into this and found some other members who have the same 32 core Xeon PC and they were completing the tasks in half the time AND their PC's are reported as being only 16 core.
On further investigation it appears that these PPS (LLR) tasks might crunch better if run on
physical cores and NOT virtual cores....so, try switching off your PC and go into the BIOS and turn off virtualisation, and see if you complete a task in half the time after it reboots !!
(Caveat: Of course, it's a close run thing as to whether it is better to run 2 tasks on one physical core (ie 2 virtual cores) in twice the time, or run 1 task on 1 physical core in half the time. So, feel free to try it, if you want. )
There's some info in this thread where PG members are quoting their results with HT on and HT off:

Tim,
I've just checked my stats and, according to John's stats I have a score of 1700ish which corresponds to the 11 validated tasks that I have. My score in the competition is about 5100 which corresponds well with the 33 tasks that I have completed. I do believe the competition credits you before the wingman returns their work but your normal account will have to wait as normal.
Chris.

Hi
I noticed that my PC was running slower than expected on these. Just compared mine (Prime 370-pro with Ryzen 7 1700) with someone else that had a similar setup and they were at least 3 times quicker. I also noticed they had 8 processors rather than my 16. I've just turned off SMT in 'BIOS' and will let it run for a few hours to see if there's a discernable differance in running times.

Hi Chris
Something strange is going on.
I've just looked up my stats on Johns website and sure enough I seem to have only earned
14,204 credits. But, as per the stats I mentioned earlier, PG claims I had earned 27,601 and checking the PG Challenge stats, their 11:15am update shows I have:
38295.23 credits.
I've completed 91 tasks which have validated - so 91 * 160 =
14,400 - so that's about right
But then: (149+91) * 160 =
38,400.
One presumes that due to the short length of the Challenge (and the fact that some tasks might not be returned by a wingman in time) that maybe credits for the Challenge are being awarded (once they are returned) and it is assumed that they will be validated.
(Of course if they are not then, any relevant credits will be deducted in due course, I assume).
regards
Tim

Hi
Well, switching off multithreading has made a difference! WUs are now running at just over 1 hour, before they were around 3 hours, a 33% increase and a bonus in that the CPU temperature has dropped 10 degrees to less than 70. Might leave it off and see if it makes a difference with other projects later on.

Hi MIke
Actually, as of 11:15am this morning my stats were:
Code: Select all
84 UBT - Timbo UK BOINC Team 104123.28
So, methinks you've edited my stats from yesterday and not updated mine !!!!
Team-wise, it looks like we are in a 3-way tussle with Canada and BOINCstats...we're leading them at the moment but it might be tight to hold onto 19th spot (where we are now !!).

Hi
Just got one of these!
Dear Primefinder,
Congratulations! Our records indicate that a computer registered by you has found a unique prime number. This computer is running BOINC, is attached to the PrimeGrid project, and is assigned to the Proth Prime Search. What makes this prime unique is that it's large enough to enter the Top 5000 List in Chris Caldwell's The Largest Known Primes Database.
Since you have auto-reporting selected, the following prime was submitted on your behalf:
Added 125538 : 807*2^2625044+1 (790220 digits)
This prime was found on this workunit which will automatically show as a prime result after verification by the Largest Known Primes Database.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us and we will surely resolve any problems.
Once again, congratulations on your find! Thank you for participating in PrimeGrid.

Hi Mike
Big OOOPS !! I hadn't read the end date correctly and just assumed it was a Sprint and ending on a Sunday !!
Posting now corrected above.
And I've re-enabled PrimeGrid on my PCs...hence why our hourly credits were lower, as they stopped getting new PG tasks about 8pm last night . Not sure if the 6 hours of crunching that's left is enough for us to overtake any other team.
The deficit is as follows:
Code: Select all
19 GPU Users Group 373323.44
20 Canada 355394.91
21 UK BOINC Team 347412.15
22 Noobs Of Kryta [NOOB] 327692.33
23 Alien Prime Cult 319362.22
We're about about 8,000 credits behind Canada - or 50 tasks (@160 credits per task). With the 36 cores at my disposal, that should be easy to make up
We need another 18,000 to re-take 19th place.

Tim

)
And 31,568 short of 19th place - which is about 200 tasks, or about 12 hours of crunching from the same 36 cores - which is more relevant as my PCs weren't crunching PrimeGrid for about 18 hours.
Next time I'll pay more attention to the ending time - promise !!
