I have been taking a look at the new AMD EPYC Server/Workstation CPUs in comparison to Intel Xeon V4s, and the difference is quite remarkable; higher cores and threads, memory channels and speed, L3 cache, and PCIE Lanes!

Intel Xeon E5-2699/96 V4 vs AMD EPYC 7601

CORES: 22 vs 32
THREADS: 44 vs 64
BASE FREQUENCY: 2.2 GHz vs 2.2 GHz
ALL CORES FREQUENCY: 2.8 GHz vs 2.7 GHz
TURBO FREQUENCY: 3.2 GHz vs 3.2 GHz
TDP: 150w/145w vs 180w
L3 CACHE: 55 MB vs 65 MB
PCIE LANES: 40 vs 128
MEMORY CHANNELS: 4 vs 8
MEMORY SPEED MAX: 2400 MHz vs 2666 MHz

About the only problem at this time is the limited lack of mobos; this one looks pretty promising:

E-ATX
4 PCIE x16 slots
3 PCIE x8 slots

Interesting, although for $600 - $700 for that motherboard I would expect to be able to use the PCIe slots without needing extenders to miss the memory slots!

Yeah that is a good point, I did not see that.

You would also have trouble fitting more than 3 double+ width cards in any ATX specification box as that only states 7 single GPU slots.

Another person had the same query about the length of the GPUs vs the RAM slots..

http://www.overclock.net/t/1633409/list ... therboards

Code: Select all

I just got in touch with Gigabyte and they told me that the first 4 slots can only be used to install half length PciExpress cards. This means that for the 2nd 3rd and 4th slot, if one wants to install videocards, only something like r9 nano or vega nano will fit.
Personally I will just use x16 to x16 risers with a GPU rack.
