Founder back online !

Post by UBT - Timbo »

Hi all,

To all prospective and existing members.

I (UBT - Timbo) suffered a mobo failure on Weds night (19th July) and as such, I've currently lost access to all my email and website editing tools.

UPDATE: New mobo now sorted and installed. Everything back together and all working 100% I'm even crunching again but have lost 4 days worth of credits. Oh well, can't be helped....!

At least can contribute some credits to the Mega Mini-Crunch as well as pinging members an email to advise it's happening !!

Bliss is the sound of cooling fans working !!

regards,

Tim

Hi John,

Thanks for the post.

Sorry, but am lining Bill G's pockets and have only Win PC's. Some are running NT 4.0 and some are on Win98SE.

But have now got my partners PC upgraded    to Win XP and have been able to check the NTFS formatted HDD's and all seems well  :D .

(PS A great site for emergency issues like I've suffered is http://www.bootdisk.com - it's saved my bacon before and has done so again today !)

Just need a new P4 (socket 478) mobo and I can be up and running soon-ish.

Otherwise, might have to dig deep and buy new mobo AND CPU. But July is a tricky month, what with VAT returns due and also part-payment due to HM Inland Revenue for Self- Assessment Income tax. Not sure I'll have anything left over, once those payments are made....!

regards
Tim

In these circumstances, Ebay is your friend.  Had my Asus mobo visit the silicon heaven in the sky recently.

Quick flit on ebay, and picked up another for £20.00...  Got an MSI K8N Neo2 (nVidia gForce3 250) - cracking mobo for the money...  socket 939, but I'm sure the same applies to (spit) Intel 478 boards...

Good luck...

Cheers, Nic.

Hi Nic,

Yup - it's gonna have to be an eBay joby, I guess. No one sells 478 socketed mobo's anymore and so someone offloading an old "New" mobo, might just come to my rescue.

There's a couple coming up on Sunday night, so hopefully, if I can log on at a appropriate time, I might get lucky...!

Just have to hope the CPU is OK.

regards,

Tim

Try

http://www.auctionstealer.com/home.cfm

or

http://www.auctionsniper.com/

I used to use them extensively when I was a trader on EBay. The free versions will place your max bid less than 10 seconds before the auction end (provided your max bid is above the current price) so no-one has a chance to outbid you in time (unless they have a 'sniper' as well) + you don't have to be online at the time -  just set it up and leave it.

Hi Mike,

I actually use "Auction Sentry" (http://www.auction-sentry.com) which is another sniping program that works in the same way as you describe. I usually place my bid around 8 seconds before the end....seems to work very well - won many items this way and haven't paid "over the odds" for something I needed.

And on the odd occasion, I've used a (really silly) high bid amount, knowing that come what may, I'd always be the top bidder, unless I came across an equally "keen" rival.

Of course, seasoned eBayers would know that they can always place a bid long before the deadline and if it's high enough, they'll still win, irrespective of any snipe bids. It all depends on how much you want something....the more you want it and the less available the item is, then usually that pushes up the demand and the bids.

On the other hand, some really obscure items go for next to nothing, simply because no one knows about them.

I'll let you know if I win later...!

regards,

Tim
