How early did you join BOINC? - ranking competition :)

Post by UBT - Timbo »

Hi all,

OK, so here's a little competition I dreamt up....

Firstly, you might know that for every BOINC project, you get assigned a "User Id" which can be found on the "My account" page on each BOINC project.

So, everytime you check any specific BOINC website, take a note of your "User Id" for that specific project....there is also a slightly quicker option - go to your account on any one project and you will see, at the bottom of the page, some of your recent project stats - just run your mouse cursor over each project name and you'll see the User ID, which are the last digits in the URL link...

UPDATE:

It's been pointed out that some projects might have an exceptionally high User ID, even if you started quite early....so we have TWO methods available of calculating your "score":

Method 1)
Add up all the Project User Id's and then divide the total, by the number of Projects you have joined.

This will give you an "Average" User ID score.

and/or

Method 2)
Do the same as above, but EXCLUDE your HIGHEST and LOWEST User ID. Then divide the "User Id total" by the number of projects you have joined, MINUS 2.

This will give you your "Woodles score".

How to enter
Just post your score (and the method used) as a reply to this thread. (Note: if it looks obviously too low, then be aware that these "User ID's" are in the public domain, so you open yourself up to be humiliated, just like a "Shamed Expenses Scandal Tory MP" if you cheat :( )

(For any pedants, if you want to list all the projects names and the related User ID in your entry, then that's fine).

To be 100% strict, you have to take into account EVERY project you have joined...otherwise we could all cherry-pick just the lowest ID's....

And the winner is the member with the LOWEST average. There might be a prize for the winner....plus a new Forum Accolade will be assigned to your forum account  ;)

regards
Tim

Notes:
1. This competition is open until such time as either people can't be bothered, or we have run out of forum members
2. To keep the thread short, I will "cut and paste" entries, into a "results page" which follows after this posting....and I may subsequently delete member postings.
3. The founder of the forum has the casting vote on all issues arising from this competition.
4. E. & O. E.

Gotta wee problem! According to John's stats I've been in 114 projects over the years. Seems I only have access to, maybe, 55 of them as the rest have been retired. I think I can get them from BOINCStats but its gonna be a pain in the ass!

WCG seems to be missing on yours.

EDIT

I've managed to find 98 out of 114. Seems projects like imp@home, luxrender, and more have just gone!

Hi Mike,

Yup - I only looked up the ID's for projects included on the "My account" page on SETI...and WCG isn't listed.....but I'll edit my results once I found a few more project ID's.

I'm the same....got a huge SETI User ID which hugely inflates my average......seems like anyone with a SETI UD might be particularly disadvantaged on this "method"...but there isn't really an easier way.....ho hum ;)

Same here - but I think most of us have done Seti at some time or other, so it's likely to affect everybody.

I had trouble finding the UID on WCG - but found they're all easy to get from your individual stats page on Boincstats.

Quite surprised when I checked that 2,532 out of 4,533 members have done SETI. I'd have thought it would have been a lot higher.

I was going to suggest that SETI be excluded as it has such a massive effect on the outcome. IE Chris Oliver (#1) has an ID of 15792, John (#2) is 1178, then Jem (#3) has 7,788,908 !

Seems like GPUGrid Role Account is easily gonna win as their total is 4.

Reckon the only way this is going to work is if SETI is excluded and a minimum quorum of projects - though a lot of our members have only done 10 or less projects - then you have the problem of deciding which projects to include.

Well, this *IS* only a "game" so, I doubt there's a need to exclude any projects....though what does seem strange is that SETI might not have started at zero, for their userid's on BOINC....

I was crunching the original SETI@home app, using Windows 95, 15 years ago....and my "joined date" on SETI's BOINC app is 3rd April 1999 and yet I'm pretty sure there weren't 3 million users on BOINC by the time I "swapped" over to the SETI BOINC app....

There's always going to be some inconsistencies, esp in an idea like this....I'll have a think about whether there can be a work-around that helps solve this.....or even just limits the disadvantage.

Maybe we only take account of the last 5 digits in the "Total User ID" and then divide by the total number of projects?

(See 2nd post in this thread for this "take" on the results table)

Tim

What is odder is that my Seti join date was 13th December 1999, and yet I have a user id of 525721.

That was a default date selected by SETI - I have the same joining date. I think it was something to do with the start of BOINC as a stand alone feature. They only had kept user data for a few years previous to 2003ish and just decided to start again when BOINC got fully up and working.

That's a good idea. On a similar thread, the statisticians among us (or at least those of us that remember from O Level maths) a similar option would be the 'interquartile' method where you take the total and then disregard the top and bottom 25%.  Things will start to get messy and complicated and I for one don't want to work that lot out! :-)

Hi Woodles,

Now THAT seems like an easy, workable solution.....so if anyone else is in favour, say "aye" and then it's a quick job of everyone re-tweaking their entries.....

Hi Mikee

Ok, that also sounds like a great idea.....and as you've volunteered (and I've forgotten O-level maths), so I'll leave it to you to work that table out....!! ;)

Hi Tim,

"Aye"

New results - 737790 - 313965 - 165 = 423660 / 39 = 10863

I'll leave Mikee to figure out the interquartiles ... whatever they are!

It is WCG that is my nemesis so using the new 'Woodles' formula...

458520 - 226376 = 232144 / 16 = 14508

Not a chance!

I've worked out mine just for interest..

Original = 87,221
Remove top/bottom = 7,618
Interquartile = 1,045

Basically, whatever method, "You can prove anything with statistics"  :o

I actually coded something for this at free-dc last year, though I never displayed it. As you can see Seti/wcg/cpdn always skews it.

Anyway, quick sql in my database shows the following (I have 149 projects total)

Code: Select all

mysql> select min(id)  from boinc_user where cpid = 'c843714b32e467b97d2571d1af9971f8';
+---------+
min(id)
+---------+
      2
+---------+
1 row in set (0.01 sec)

mysql> select max(id)  from boinc_user where cpid = 'c843714b32e467b97d2571d1af9971f8';
+---------+
max(id)
+---------+
 507636
+---------+
1 row in set (0.01 sec)

mysql> select (sum(id) - 507638)/147 from boinc_user where cpid = 'c843714b32e467b97d2571d1af9971f8';
+------------------------+
(sum(id) - 507638)/147
+------------------------+
             1488.0612
+------------------------+
