VGTU (replaces VTU)

Anything "BOINC" specific can be commented on here...such as Project news and announcements etc. Also: any problems with BOINC or maybe you have found something interesting, tell us about it. Chat about the various 3rd party client applications used for some of the projects such as optimised clients.

VGTU (replaces VTU)

Post by UBT-mark3346 »

(Team needs to be created on this project)
Start of the project
Dear All,

We would like to announce some kind of reincarnation of VTU@Home project. Some of you may remember that project, which was created in 2006 by Aurimas Norkevičius (VGTU postgraduate student at that time). Over that time, several different applications in various fields were developed in VGTU Department of Mathematical Modelling. They have gained significant attention from BOINC volunteers. Project had almost 3.500 users, which was actually on the top of capabilities of available server. However, in late 2009 due to hard drive failure, all project data were unrecoverably lost… and we had no technical and human resources to continue.

However, after two years, we have decided to recreate our BOINC project. We believe that in volunteer computing there is a place for true Olympic principles and spirit, and so we hope to find a place for our small academic project among the others. We start with cryptographic applications and hope to find scientists from our university and other Lithuanian academic institutions interested in solving their problems using this computational platform. In any case we believe that our project can contribute to popularization of ideas of volunteer computing in VGTU community.

At this point, we would like to thank the users of VTU@Home for their contribution and apologize for the possibly lost work due to hardware crash. Old project’s database is lost. Therefore we do not announce the return of VTU@Home, but the start of “VGTU project@Home”. Furthermore, this project name indicates correctly the name of hosting institution, which was changed some time ago.

With best regards,
The Project Team.15 Feb 2012 | 17:24:39 UTC · Comment

Our goal is to persuade scientists to use this kind of computations in their research and to assist them in preparing BOINC applications. We hope that scientific applications from various fields will be attractive to many current and future BOINC community volunteers and this will allow us to accumulate enough computing resources to achieve significant (unachievable otherwise) results.
Anyone any idea what they actually do? I well appreciate its hard sometimes for startups to put across what they are about - but the above is lots of marketing, and zero substance.

Its sounds like yet another Maths Project, and thats cool if individuals like Maths Projects. Its almost an invite to come and crunch, we'll tell you later what we've done - a daft way of putting it course, I'm groping for a correct way to express it ..... apart from ....  what do these guys actually do ?

"VGTU@Home application
This is a cryptographic application. Information security couldn't be underestimated in our today's world and will become more and more critical in the days ahead. Cryptography is one of the key technologies in achieving it. Constantly growing computational capabilities are imposing more and more strict requirements on cryptography standards, which are the objects constant study and analysis.
This application is solving DES Challenge problem. More on DES algorithm and its noticeable history as encryption standard, you can find here. We note that private data are not used for our tests!"

It appears to be another DES cracker.

Personally I'd like to know where thats going. Had no problem with DNetC or Moo, the code owners wanted it to carry on after the formal competition. I had massive issues with a DNet offshot trying to break a Motorola Key Code .... so did Motorola (!).

I'm sure its motices are fine - motorola type sagas are very rare -  just would like them to be clearer what they are up to.

Acckk ... idle thoughts .... will be interesting to see how they go.
