Help wanted for PrimeGrid's next challenge

This section is where you can post topics related to Challenges from other websites, such as Formula-BOINC, SETI-Germany and BOINCstats, as well as project challenges such as from WCG, PrimeGrid et al.

As a Team, we really want to engage as many team members with these challenges, as this gives us a great way of attracting more members to our Team...plus we get to show our strengths as a Team by (hopefully) doing well in each one.

PS: I have moved lots of topics into this section where they are relevant...as you can see, we've always been happy to take part in Challenges...and long may that continue ;-)

Help wanted for PrimeGrid's next challenge

Post by idb »

The BOINC PrimeGrid project runs, roughly once a month, a challenge where one PrimeGrid sub-project is selected and users try to complete as many tasks for this sub-project as they can within a given time period.  At the end of each challenge points are awarded to individuals and teams, and a running total is kept for the year.

Members of the UK BOINC team compete every month.  Last month 13 members took part and the team finished in 14th place; in the yearly standings the team is currently 16th.

The next challenge runs from the 18th to the 23rd of August, and we will be completing tasks for the Woodall LLR sub-project.

The UK BOINC team would welcome any extra assistance, so if you feel like giving a little extra spice to your BOINC experience then feel free to join in.  You don't need to do anything special - just attach to the PrimeGrid project, set your PrimeGrid preferences to this months selected project and, after the start time has passed, let your machine grab one (or more) of the tasks.

Details of this months challenge can be found in the PrimeGrid forum at http://www.primegrid.com/forum_thread.p ... true#17226.

Current challenge stats can be found at http://www.primegrid.com/challenge/challenge.php.

Two points worth mentioning...

- The warning at the start of the challenge description (first URL above) should be heeded.  PrimeGrid is very processor intensive so your machine really needs to be in reasonable condition - dust free and with all fans working!

- Only tasks obtained after the start time and returned before the finish time are counted for the challenge, and the tasks for this month are quite long: around 47 hours on average.  With this challenge only lasting 5 days a machine that is not running for more than 50% of the day may well not complete any tasks in time.

Any questions or comments can be directed to the forum on this board http://forum.ukboincteam.com/viewforum.php?f=57.

If you have doubts about your PC`s ability to cope with the rigours of Primegrid, you could do worse than downloading "Speedfan".

This is a free program that will monitor your fan speeds and your cpu temperatures.
