The UBT Vs TSBT Enigma Battle!

This section is where you can post topics related to Challenges from other websites, such as Formula-BOINC, SETI-Germany and BOINCstats, as well as project challenges such as from WCG, PrimeGrid et al.

As a Team, we really want to engage as many team members with these challenges, as this gives us a great way of attracting more members to our Team...plus we get to show our strengths as a Team by (hopefully) doing well in each one.

PS: I have moved lots of topics into this section where they are relevant...as you can see, we've always been happy to take part in Challenges...and long may that continue ;-)

The UBT Vs TSBT Enigma Battle!

Post by UBT - Mikee »

We issue a challenge to...

The Scottish BOINC Team!

We challenge TSBT to an 'Enigma' battle!

The challenge is to be the first team to overtake 'The Dark Side' and hence be the UK #1 team.

The Rules

There are NO RULES!

The only judging element will be as per the evening update at BOINCStats, specifically, this page

http://boincstats.com/stats/team_stats. ... %20Kingdom

The duration of being the UK#1 team need only be 1 update.

Current stats are:-

Code: Select all

1	The Dark Side 365,441 RAC    15
2	UK BOINC Team 295,623 RAC 5,903
3	TSBT	      	 271,229 RAC 9,561
Work units on an average PC should take less than 2 hours.
Possible duration is around 5 days.
Target - First to 365,442! (Unless 'The Dark Side' starts up again!)
If we've all ready started when you read this - jump in!
If we've all ready finished when you read this - where've you been??

Charge your weapons (ooer!)...

Let us make haste and beat off the challenge of the Scottish hoards!!

Let every man due his duty (ooer again!)

Optimise your clients (another ooer!), set down all other projects (or at least set to 'suspend')

(Calm down, calm down - it's only a bit of fun!)

Suppose I'd better tell you the site name etc. and a little bit of info for newbies!

If you're not all ready attached to this project you can do so by selecting 'Add project' (if you're in 'simple view') else 'tools' > attach to project.
'Next' then copy & paste ...

http://www.enigmaathome.net/

Input your user name and password (try to keep the same one if possible) - Next

The following screen will take you to the Enigma site where you can change your user name and select country.
Once you've done that go to your 'account' screen. You should see that you're not a member of the team so you need to join!
Select 'Find a team' and input 'UK' . "UK BOINC Team" should be top of the list. Click on the hyperlink, scroll down until you see 'Join this team' and click it.
That's it - you're in!

Back to the BOINC manager now. By this time the necessary files should have downloaded and at least 1 'Enigma' work unit should be ready to run, if it's not started all ready. If you want to go 'all guns blazing' then go to the projects tab, set all your other projects to 'no new work' and/or 'suspend'.

Wait for the first work unit to complete before trying the next bit (optional).

If you're anyway concerned about your network stability, or just worried that the Enigma server might be off-line for any reason, or you just don't want to be connected to internet 24/7 you can set the manager to download several hours worth of work units so your PC can crunch them and upload the results when it suits you.
'Advance view' > 'advanced' > 'preferences' then the 'network usage' tab. Set 'addition work buffer' to however many days or part days you want. Setting it to 0.25 will give you approximately 6 hours worth of work per core. (This is why you should complete 1 work unit first as the PC won't know how much to download until it's done.)

Now that's out of the way....

Cry 'Havoc,' and let slip the dogs of war!!

You're on!
This is most definitely, by Boinc standards anyway, a sprint rather than a marathon.
I'll set 4 cores onto Enigma. Maybe more if it looks like it might be close.
Of course with Merlyn already churning out on his lonesome more than all the UK teams combined, perhaps it's in the bag already!

Starting Stats were:-

Code: Select all

1	The Dark Side 365,441
2	UK BOINC Team 295,623 - 69,818 to target
3	TSBT	      	 271,229 - 94,212 to target
Current stats are:-

Code: Select all

1	The Dark Side 365,441 - no change
2	UK BOINC Team 311,463 - Up 15,840, 53,978 to target
3	TSBT	      	 291,442 - Up 20,213, 73,999 to target
TSBT outcrunched us by 4,373 over 24 hours!

Looks like one of us is going to hit target in 3.5 days - too close to call at the moment!

We're now 'unofficially' within 10,000 of target.

http://www.enigmaathome.net/top_teams.p ... tal_credit

I think if we can get them sometime tomorrow morning they might show up at BOINCStats. If they don't then I think we might be in for a shock as TSBT will put everything into it to take us. As it is, output has increased by much more than I expected both here and over there - luckily not as much as required over there, as they're still outproducing by just 4,000/day.

Are we having fun yet?

From the Enigma@Home site you are just 4.1K behind The Dark Side. We are 14.1K behind you. So we are catching up fast but almost certainly not fast enough. Barring a major BoincStats quirk I reckon you will win. I hope your stay at the top will be as enjoyable as it will be brief.

Well done chaps. The BoincStats daily update confirms your victory.

I think we passed The Dark Side about midday so we are just half a day behind you. Keep looking in that mirror. :)

It's only fair to note that you have grabbed back the UK crown, mainly because some of us at TSBT bailed out and left it to our most enigmatic member Merlyn who also changed priorities.

So, well done, but the point is we could thrash you is we wanted too but we don't so you're okay :) . For now.
