New project that most of us can't do yet - even Linux users!

Wanna be a seismologist?

Well, you can download and run the program but it will just sit there taking up resources unless you have an accelerometer fitted. An accelerometer measures acceleration (duh!). A common use is on aircraft to measure G-forces. These ones are very sensitive to minute movements and they are using them to measure ground movement.

I didn't know this but, apparently, some laptops have this built in so you might be able to run the application. If you haven't, or only run PCs, then it seems you can buy one of these and plug them into a spare USB port. The project will supply them at $49 each from November but only in the US for the time being. Not sure if you can buy them from elsewhere, probably but I haven't looked. http://qcn.stanford.edu/learning/requests.html

It would be nice to have a project where you can physically be part of it rather than just run applications, downside being you'll have to pay for the equipment, which is fair enough - I wouldn't expect them to donate the sensor in the hope that you'd actually use it!

I joined up with this a while ago, thinking it was a CPDN type project. But reading this I think I'll leave it alone. Pity because it looks a worthwhile project to be involved with! :(

This could be prone to bad results though? If it is so sensitive even letting off wind could cause a magnitude 5 earthquake according to the laptop??
