SETI and BAM

Post by UBT - Mikee »

Just by chance, after trying out the new BAM, I happened to be going through my SETI account. For some weird reason I found I was in the 'Internet Nebraska' team! Changed it back to here as soon as I saw it.

As I hadn't crunched SETI for a few weeks it didn't matter. Strange how it happened though.

[edit]

Even though I haven't detached from Einstein it's happened there slightly differently. Joined 30/11/2005 - and had me rejoining from UK BOINC 12/5/2006. So I've joined twice without leaving!

I'd be a bit worried if my accounts started changing team "On their own" who knows where my credits could be going!

Well, for some reason this last week, this computer has been 'testing' me! Just trying to see how far it can go before I rip its inerds out! :withstupid:

I looked thorough all the accounts. I didn't notice anyone elses account behaving strangely, so hopefully it's just me amd BAM not getting on. :)

Hi Mike,

I noticed that in the last day or so in the "SETI Leaving" stats, http://www.boincsynergy.com/stats/team- ... eam=112288 that you had "left" the team.

Checked the SETI site and you were still there, so I assumed it was an XML abberation.

This "might" be linked to BAM - they had some CPID issues which I reported and after which they closed that part down - I was given the CPID of a member called "BamBam" - nothing to do with me at all.

So, if you joined BAM, it's possible that as that has the potential to make it easy for members to join and leave teams, that that might have happened.

Would sugggest you contact Willy at Boincstats and report it - he can then see if it was his scripts that caused the problem, in which case, he needs to fix it quick - else other people might mysteriously switch teams.

BTW: DId you notice anything in the BOINC client -  it shows your Team name for each project you are joined up to...for instance this url http://www.boincsynergy.com/stats/index ... earchteam= shows that for Einstein you are a member of "UK BOINC" - which isn't us...!

regards,

Tim

Well it just got worse.

Been checking my farm of PC's to make sure that all is well and I find that BAM has, overnight and without my permission, attached 3 of my PC's to SETI @home.

Likewise it has also tried to "detach" these same 3 PC's from BBC CCE - even though they are NOT attached (nor ever have been, as each of these PC's is a bit long in the tooth and would probably take 5 years to complete a BBC WU !!).

Have raised this on the Bugs forum, and await a reply.

But this might explain why Mikee also has a problem.

EDIT: Would therefore suggest you use GREAT CAUTION when joining up to BAM - it is in BETA, so EXPECT problems to happen....!

Tim

I have no problems with BAM at all it has worked perfectly since day 1, expecially with all the projects it doesn't fully support

Hi David,

Simple question - how many PC's do you have?

And on each of these PC's are you attached to every project on each PC?

In my case, I have 7 PC's crunching for distributed computing projects - 5 of which I attached to BAM in order to help BOINCstats "test" their project. I recognise therefore that this early in a project, things might go wrong and have no issue with this...

Each of these 5 were attached to different projects, as befits the crunching power of each.

And for whatever reason, of these 5, 3 were "automatically" attached (by BAM) to a project which I didn't want them attached to...!

The other 2, were already attached to SETI, so nothing seemed to happen to them and fortunately, the SETI opti-applications running on these 2 have NOT been overwritten by the project downloading new app's to them - but that might have happened !!.

So, I can only assume that the problem I found on BAM afffects maybe "some" PC's that are not attached to a particular project.

Hence you may be unaffected, as all of your PC's (if you have more than one) may already be attached !!

regards,

Tim

I just saw it was UK BOINC and left it at that! Just changed it back to the correct team now via the Einstein site. Again - good job I'm not doing any WU there at the mo.

I haven't been doing SETI or Einstein for a few weeks now, so the client wasn't updated - still showed correct info.

Just have to keep a sharp eye on things for now :!:

BAM should be fine now you have set it all back now to the right teams if it tends to get a glitch its just the one time. Just check on it every couple of days just to make sure everything is ok, it it happens again just leave a post on BOINCstats just to let Willy know, so he can see if any of the code is wrong.

Hopefully it won't happen again

Just needs time to synchronize its not always a process that happens instantly, same as anything for a CPID it can take a few hours or even days to make the rounds around the projects
