SETI broke

Post by UBT - Mikee »

Only just noticed this as I don't do SETI
September 7, 2007
We are having problems with our science database server. Currently we are not generating any new work to send out.
Server Status is still showing no work to be sent. Hope everyone has got at least one backup project.

There seems to be an ongoing problem here, I'm starting to think that BOINCing and SETI is becoming a victim of it's own success, and the equipment is struggling to cope.
It seems that these system problems are becoming more regular and more serious, we have only just got Rosetta back up, just a SETI goes down.
Bit upsetting but I'm sure the guys are bevering away to repair the problems.

It's quite true that as member involvement with each BOINC project increases, so the bandwidth and hardware demands placed upon the project increase.

This has been a sign of the "growing pain" for some of the "smaller" projects, such as PrimeGrid and Belgian Beer, where the bandwidth issue can become a major bottleneck.

Likewise, many projects are not commercially funded and hence rely on donations of either hardware from sponsors or money from numerous fund raising exercises.

So, in the end, BOINC may only survive if the projects can be funded in such a way as to keep in step with the demands placed on it, by it's members.

I had often wondered whether it might be a good idea for members to have to pay a small membership fee to each project they want to support, in order to help finance the project. Of course this could be open to mis-use (esp. if anyone can start-up a project, get loads of members signed up and then scoots off with the dosh !!).

But of course the problem here is that you won't get "fresh" members signed up - so maybe you pay a fee when you hit a particular threshold....? And then this entitles you access to a faster server (as paid for by the donations) with more available WU's on it....?

regards

Tim

Funny you should mention a small payment, "Planet Quest" are asking for just such a small payment £2:00 I  believe although there seems to be some debate about if the payment is compulsory or not.
All the BOINC projects are alway short of cash, seems to come with the territory.

Reading the SETI message boards I have to agree about the project becoming a victim of its own success. Those hardworking blokes try and keep an aging set of kit working without any govt. cash and rely on donations of both money and equipment. They also have to hold down jobs of their own.

Were NASA told by the govt. to pull funding or was it a NASA decision? I can't remember :(

Just my luck! Thought the weekend outages were over and boosted SETI output. Now got 6 WUs to upload!  Will probably just build up a cache of uploads so when they get uploads going again will get a big boost.

Hi all,

Had just finished some WCG on one PC and so I thought...time to get some SETI WUs....

Now, there's a problem...I get:
28/10/2007 18:58:52 - Scheduler request failed: Server returned nothing (no headers, no data)
Checked the SETI server status page (which I eventually get to - is it slow?) and it looks fine...

Was slow now back to normal speed. Might be a problem with the BOINCManager.

Which reminds me - isn't it good etiquette to warn the admins that there's going to be an extra load on the servers when the 'Gauntlet' starts?

Just wondering if that had been done or needs to be done.

This was the main reason I decided not to join the Gauntlet, SETI is to unreliable for me to comint my one machine to 100%.

Hi Terry,

I had the same problem since last night and it wasn't a lot better this morning.

Got home tonight and everything is rosy...plenty of WU's downloaded and crunching is on-going...

Much have been a blip at SETI...

There were minor minor hiccups over the weekend, mostly due to a concentrated bunch of noisy workunits being pushed through the pipeline. Other than that - no big server issues to mention.

Mines fine now its got rid of 30 second WU's

Hope all Gauntleteers have reasonable caches. No work fron SETI at present.
November 8, 2007
A big index build is stressing our science databases and the splitters are running very slowly. This has resulted in the project running out of work to send. We hope to see it clear by tomorrow morning.
It actually appears that the splitters are currently disabled.

Might be an idea to change your Preferences (either in BOINC Manager "Advanced > Preferences > Network usage" or via your SETI account)

Change the "Connect about every" to say 4 days
and change the "Additional Work buffer" to something like 4 to 6 days.

And if SETI has work available, you'll have a nice cache....once the Gauntlet is over, you can reduce this...but it might be an idea to keep it, as it has a benefit for every project you are attached to...!

You can also check available disk space limits as well...each SETI WU is around 330k....so it might be that with some HDD space taken up by the suspended projects, BOINC might be deciding you don't have enough available HDD space...!

Do you get any comments in the "messages" tab, when you do an UPDATE on SETI?

I'm having trouble getting work units too. Perhaps the Gauntlet has stretched seti to the limits.

I've got one left to process on this CPU. About 6 hours left of WU on another, about 10hours left on another.

oh no :o. I guess everyone doing the Gauntlet will have the same trouble though.

Hi all,

I have plenty of work still to crunch....!

I set my connect days and work buffers fairly high, esp on my quad core...coz that just spits out completed WUs every couple of hours at max !!

Leaves me with about 200 WU still to complete...

Mind you - I'm on 24/7 on 3 PC's, so they just get downloaded, crunched uploaded and replaced...!

If you can update your prefs and resource share, via your SETI account, then when SETI has more work (once the splitters are back online), then you'll have work.

Meantime, you'll just have to re-enable another project so your crunching time is used to the max...!

Musta bin a temporary glitch. It's running as are the splitters. Minimal if any work available as it's all getting grabbed as it apears.

{EDIT} 2 mins later, I've just received 8 WUs. so it's definitely runnung again {/EDIT}

However, if you look at Temujin's stats pages, combined graphs now seem to exclude SETI.  Teach him to brag!

Hopefully things will sort themselves out.

I tried a few times shortly after the SETI site returned. My stats looked ok, but the graphs on clicking my overall total, both from the live and test pages showed no data from SETI from the past 28 days/daily/hourly figures.

GOt me panicing a bit as I had an average of 0 credits for the 7day and 1 day totals. (JUst about 6 credits over the week from Pirates.

It seems ok now though.  AS I said, a temporary glitch somewhere.

There's a number of people involved. All seem to have lost their seti UID in my CPID table, therefore the combined graphs don't include seti

It could be related to seti being down but I'm not sure why some work and some don't  :?

edit
it seems that during the 18:00 update, I may have got an incomplete seti xml file.
Part of what it does is sets everybodies seti ID to 0 in my CPID table, then re-updates each row from the xml file, thereby catching any leavers.

Looks like I'll have to revisit that code :?

You can't blame me for this as I don't do SETI!

Is there a problem with the stats/XML output? Just had a quick look around some of the stats sites and none appear to show any results since yesterday afternoon. Nothing reported on the SETI site. Usual suspect servers seem to be running normally.

Just thought I'd mention it as it seems our output has dropped by half!

Our stats for example.

It looks as though it "might" be coming back

Ah! Soon as I post it comes back to life!

7000 isn't much to show for the day! No doubt there'll be a lump of 200,000 in subsequent updates then for late yesterday and today's results.

Last night the BOINC database server crashed - it's recovering now and the project should be up shortly.

Sort of broke yesterday.

I knew we'd get a good day today as we'd have 2 days worth. However, we scored our 2nd EVER highest score with 463,605 credits!

Well done those that do it!
