SETI@Home BETA

Team Stats

:director: Shame on you users who have signed up and not produced enough credits in the last few weeks

When the week long SETI crunch is over I think you should all download a WU (or if you aren't doing the crunch get signed up now)

And for people who are not crunching this project sign up here

Now I am hearing people say why should I sign up to yet another project, simple this one is the future of SETI, the WU's been tested now are what is going to replace what we know of on the Main SETI projects, bigger WU's, longer crunch times, Enhanced scientific coding to ensure that the WU's are checked for all kinds of signals.

It doesn't stop there SETI@home Plans, Astropulse will be one day be getting tested through this test project.

So get on the bandwagon to help improve SETI, once Enhanced is out of the door, we can all start on Astropulse.

PS: - Joining the project now with enhanced will give you a glimpse of how SETI will work on BOINC once it is ported over

Silly question: Is the Enhanced version of SETI using any optimised coding or will someone make an opti-version at some point.

Given that not much has changed (except CPU power) so, it would be nice if the "pure power" we have available today can be utilised "properly" - graphics are OK - but they do inmpact on the performance side.

(Hell - I can remember back in 1999, running SETI Classic on a 486 (33MHz) and a Pentium (133Mhz) - with each WU taking over 30 hours - using dial-up and SETI-Spy + SETI-Driver meant I could cache lots of WU's and upload / download them all at once, usually at weekends when dial-up costs less....! How times have changed !)

regards,

Tim

Its a total new science code that is optimised loads already, but there are optimised clients been tested (doors are closed) and hopefully these will come out shortly after Enhanced comes to SETI

That would be round about the same time I had seti running on my DEC Alphas, uptill then I'd been using P133s and those Alphas really smoked, they were the fastest things around.
They're dog slow today though  :(  21hours per WU

Is it worth running Seti@home beta now?

We are trying to identify the cause of the 'software problem' that the server is reporting. Might not get back up until tomorrow afternoon. Sorry....

Got 1 WCG WU to finish then it's back onto this - my new favourite project!

Takes a while to do on the 498Mhz laptop but it's consistant with 70 credits/day - cor!

It'll take 6 months to get to UK number 1 but they're getting closer everyday!
It seems like we'll overtake our current nemisis 'AMD Users' within 2 weeks as well.

Its also worth mentioning that a certain Scottish Team have increased there work there so at the same time we are expanding our lead away from them

I will start some more of this when my WCG units are done

Just joined and will process some wu for this project as all my WCG units have now completed

Looks like we'll overtake 'AMD users' tomorrow.

That will brings us 1 place nearer to OcUK.

Looking at BSStats they show we've gained on them by 3 months in less than a week!

Ooo... I feel an unofficial crunch coming on! :D

Another reason for people not crunching SETI BETA to join in is this
Hi everybody,

The new multibeam splitter is getting close, and astropulse is, too. Really. This time for sure.

In order to use the new splitter I'm going to need to reorganize the database to add some new fields to the receiver configuration table, and some new elements to the analysis configuration. In order to do that without causing too much havoc, I'm going to need to shut down work creation, and (later) assimilation.

So on friday, I'll turn of the beta splitter. On monday, I'll turn off assimilation. During the normal tuesday reorganization, I'll make the changes, and if all goes well, the multibeam splitter will start on tuesday afternoon.

So don't be too worried about "No new work" messages over the weekend.
So come on people get signed upto the project, with any luck by this time next week or so new types of WU's should be coming through and then hopefully the real testing of the new SETI Astropulse work can begin.

Best to join up now as the work you do on this project now will help it be as bug free as possible by the time it reaches the main SETI project

Latest update
December 10, 2007
In case you've noticed that you aren't getting work, the splitters are off until December 12 in order to let the work and assimilation queues drain before we make the database changes necessary to support the multibeam splitter.

I had a new multibeam WU and it managed to grab 1.5Gb of memory before I killed it. Numerous reports on their forums and they've stopped distributing them.

That's why wifey was complaining last night! Computer slowed to a crawl. It didn't twig that it could have been Seti causing the problem. I virtually lost 8 hours crunching 'cos of that! :(

Ah well... the pleasures of Beta testing I suppose!

Aborted them, so let's see what happens now.

Just got 4 WU that I will run today and see what happens, will report back later, lets hope they progress without any probs??

They seem to be running exactly the same as before.

Just got a "The number of results detected exceeds the storage space allocated" which I haven't seen for a couple of weeks - lost all of 2 minutes there!

Processed the 4 WU from this morning without a problem approx 4 hrs each unit so now on 2 more.

The web site did mention they had some bad WU's this could explain Mikeejones problem?

December 13, 2007
Some bad work units went out today. Feel free to reset the project or cancel any workunits that slow down your machine or use up all of your memory

Just had a couple of batches of Wu's on my laptop that are completing in under a minute  bad Wu's or did someone feed my cpu viagra  :dontknow:

Ok, I see the projects gone limp again so I'm guessing that is the reason, maybe it's their servers that need the viagra.

I got no response from my last post on this subject so I'll try one more time.

Am I the only one to have had 101 WUs complete in a minute or less, they were all 1 to 2 hour units but the odd larger units I've had seem to complete ok, should I except more or just give up for now  :?:

No - you're not. Seems that the most recent tape is full of noise. You'll see that they all have -9 error code. You'll probably have reached your daily quota as well.

It'll be sorted tomorrow when they stick in a new set of results.

Meanwhile, take a break or if you fancy a real job try out QMC - that'll keep you amused with a 'how long?'

Ahhh, thanks Mikee, still learning here, I didn't know there was a daily quota.
I still have a few crunching ok on 2 systems so I'll catch up on the projects I suspended for the push on the other 2. But I will have a read up on QMC as I have no idea what that one is all about.
