Receiving some larger packets

Post by UBT - Knightlight »

Hi,
Has anyone else been receiving some very large packets recently. Usually I can process a Einstein packet in 1.5hours, now it takes 18 hours.  The nice thing is getting loads of credits for it. over 300 credits.  :P

Only 18 hours?!  They're taking 25-ish on my poor old PC!

Receiving some larger packets

Hi
25 Hours eh? Thats good - mine vary from 22hours for an 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4200+ to 60hours on a Xeon(TM) CPU 3.06GHz , and only getting 240 credits to boot.

Einstein are showing a big drop in daily credits in boingstats. A 30%+ drop over the last few days.

I've dropped from 18.7 credits per hour to 11.2 credits per hour on the new WUs

Spinhenge gives me about 9-10 credits per hour, so the rate is still good, just not as good as before!

This might explain the drop in credit granted for the einstein project as a whole?

Yeah I've noticed a fall in average credits too.

On my slower PC its now taking 247 seconds per credit. The smaller work units took 194 second per credit. So certainly getting less credit for the amount of time spent. From 18.5 per hour to 14.5 per hour

So i thought perhaps that computer is under more work load doing something else, so looked at my faster PC, not dam fast but faster than my other. Its 147 seconds per credit on the larger work units, and 117 seconds per credit on the smaller work units. From 30.7 per hour to 24.5 per hour

I think most people are effected by this average per day falling, as there has been a bit of shuffling on the leader board. I've moved up 1 position.  :D

I think I need more than my 2 computers to get my average any higher.

At least Einstein is giving more Credits than Seti. I'm doing that 50% of the time too.

They have adjusted the credit downwards as it appears it was set too high before, there is some stuff about it on their forums. As you run Seti check if there is an optimised client you can run such as chicken soup, see our optimised client thread, I find it makes a noticeable difference (I use the no graphics version).

Thanks for the advice, one of my PC's was Intel Core 2, so have downloaded and installed the appropriate app. Will see how that goes.

However my other computer is:-
GenuineIntel Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5310 @ 1.60GHz [x86 Family 6 Model 15 Stepping 7] [fpu tsc pae nx sse sse2 mmx]

I have downloaded 'sse2-generic' for that one, shame there isn't a Xeon version, however i think the Xeon is slower than my Intel Core 2 anyway.

Thanks again.

you should at least be able to run the SSE2-Intel P4 version on your E5310, more likely be able to run the SSE3-Intel P4/PD version and I would guess that you'll even be able to run the SSSE3-Intel Core 2 version.

Have you run the chicken test & benchmark tool?
that would not only tell you which apps would run but also which runs the fastest. Well worth a look.

I used the auto set up one and let it take the longest checking time. I am getting the following credits (per core)
Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 2.80GHz  24 to 26 credits/hour
Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 3.40GHz  33 to 35 credits/hour
laptop=Intel(R) CPU T2050 @ 1.60GHz 18 to 21 credits/hour

I have two wu's running on a p4 3.2
7.5% done in 5 hrs and 5% done in 4 hrs. I hope they start to speed up because that pc is only on for about 4 hours a day and they expire in 6 days!

Had to leave PC on overnight for a few days but 1st one completed in a little over 75 hours for 520 credits.
2nd one is 2 hours away from completing for the same credits!

All the ones I've been crunching seem to take between 48 and 52 hours, so it's a long s-l----o----------w process.  Mind you, they've all been stable/successful/whatever (famous last words...!)

I've got a 63hr WU ready to start! These long 'uns are a pain in the Ar*e tu us single CPU crunchers, but if the credit is that good then it'll be worth it! :D

Mmm this sounds interesting as my server chucked all the toys out of the pram this morning and I had to reinstall Boinc on another drive, transferred all the files over but it activated all the projects some how ?? (probably my fault) so it was downloading WU from almost all Projects. Any way the Einstein one says 80+ Hrs to complete!!

The ones I have are around 50/55 hours and grant credit of 646, about half that time on ABC with a much slower machine scores a 1000

Got yet another of these giant wu's  :?

So far been running for 20:39:43, 27.218%, and 44:53:33 to complete...

At least you get a good credit score when it does finish  8)

Any reason?

Probably just that they take so long that one WU uses up Einstein's "share" of your PC for a while.  I had at least a week's hiatus between the previous WU and the one that has almost finished (99% after 92hours of crunching, so it had well better be worth it!!!)

Seems to do that sometimes. Had the same thing a while ago, then gives you another biggy to keep you happy.

You could try changing your preferences to give it more time if you want to run it more often. I have this @ 300% @ the moment.

They seem to be running at about 24 hrs a pop, on mine, as for credit, it ain't that good at one point I had over 2000 points 'pending' it's just so frustrating.
I was thinking of ditching the project until they come up with something better, about crediting you with your work.

They have a 3 week deadline on the wu's so if the other one in the quorum has a slower machine and/or does not run 24/7 you have to wait that long (but if the other wu times out and they do not shorten the deadline for a reissue you are waiting up to 6 weeks), but you still get the credit.

Mine take around 54 hrs for the 650 credit which is ok(ish) but not over generous.

Thanks for the answers, I can see your point about PC share, PennyQ. I think I'll wait until I get another WU the natural way, Prof, instead of tinkering with my settings!
