Carbon footprint (and how to make good your energy use)

Post by UBT - Timbo »

Hi all,

Another useful idea to consider.

Obviously many crunch BOINC on a 24/7 basis, even though the BOINC project suggest to us that BOINC should NOT be the primary reason why a PC is left on for this length of time....but I think many members "suffer" this extra energy cost in order to help the projects.

So, I'm keen to promote the idea of a zero carbon energy use "footprint" and would hope that we each consider making some efforts to replenish the energy reserves we use for BOINC.

I found this website that may be worth viewing:

http://www.carbonfootprint.com/index.html

and in particular this section - plant a tree
http://www.carbonfootprint.com/shop00.html

and this section - Carbon offset certificates
http://www.carbonfootprint.com/shop3.html

Please take a look and perhaps make a contribution - it'd be nice to think that UBT members are mindful of the environment and will do their best to help protect it for future generations.

regards

Tim

Plant a tree is no good, a study has just been done that shows that the tropics are the places where trees should be planted as they remove the most CO2 planting any where else simply does not have much benefit
Our study shows that tropical forests are very beneficial to the climate because they take up carbon and increase cloudiness, which in turn helps cool the planet,” Bala said.
But the study concludes that by the year 2100, forests in mid and high latitudes will make some places up to 10 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than would have occurred if the forests did not exist.

The link provided enables you to plant a tree in The Great Rift Valley, Kenya - and if that's not tropical I don't know what is.....!

You can also chose to "go green" with some energy suppliers which should go some way to reduce any 24/7 BOINC effect.
