HELP! (IE) - Solved.... Now a new problem!

Post by DJH@GB-Ro »

I don't use very IE often, but when I open it nothing happens :? I mean nothing, no page will load or even start to load. I've reset defaults, turned off Internet Security etc. WTF! Never had anything like this before. Also, if I switch rendering engine to IE in Firefox, nothing happens.

If you have IE7 on you can tell it to Diagnose Connection problems in the tools menu, that may or may not help

I may have to download it. When does it come as an auto update?
This is very annoying. I'm not usually defeated by such a problem but I just can't get it to work

Auto update is sometime next month, if you want to download it just get it now rather than wait for auto update, I am hoping that by the time the auto update arrives a few minor bugs will have been fixed

try resetting the winsock - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/299357
also try flushing out the dns with ipconfig /flushdns

thats all i can think of just now, worth a shot.

Yes, after installing IE7 and then again after uninstalling it. I did full spyware scans too. I'm completely stumped

And I suppose I should say, it never even says 'Page cannot be displayed, it's just white and the flag is still moving to signify loading, but nothing happens. I left it on for hours, still loading nothing.

Time to install Linux :D

I don't know what else it could be. I know the reset winsock thing worked for my brother-in-law when he lost browsing capability. Just try googling your symptoms and see if you can find anything.

Sound like what PaulC posted may be the problem.

If running Win XP with SP2 open Command Prompt (Start/All Programs/Accessories) and  type netsh winsock reset into the DOS window that appears.

Win XP without SP2 download and run winsockxpfix

Other versions of windows download and run lspfix (you need to have winsock 2 installed if  running Win95)

I did it, it asked me to restart, and still no improvement. Very odd. I'll do some more googling.

Thanks for the input, all!  :D

It's ok, problem solved :D And in a quite a simple way    I just went to 'add or remove windows components' and removed then added it. Now it works

Simple, maybe, but not very intuitive. Maybe you should post a solution for the guys on that forum ;)

Oh for God's sake   When I open IE the uk MSN home page loads, but if I click any favourites, it just opens Firefox and laods them there

And if I type ANY address, it just opens a tab over in Firefox

But to be honest, I don't care

FF 2.0 ?

What's your default browser?

Sounds like FF is taking "open links in a new tab" a bit too far :D

Yep FF 2.0 just downloaded it today. It's quite amusing actually  If I ever need IE I'll just switch rendering engine in FF to IE, that works  8)

I would make a point of checking all your file types in explorer.

open up windows explorer -> tools -> file types tab.

and just check to see what you have in there for htm, html, aspx etc
Something may have got corrupt.
