Are We Up For This ?
PrimeGrid's 2011 Challenge Series
Dog Days of Summer Challenge
26 August 18:00 UTC – 28 August 18:00 UTC
A 2 day Challenge is being offered on PrimeGrid's Proth Prime Search (LLR) application.
To participate in the Challenge, please select only the The Proth Prime Search (LLR) project in your PrimeGrid preferences section.
The challenge will begin 26 Aug 2011 18:00 UTC and end 28 Aug 2011 18:00 UTC.
Application builds are available for Linux 32 bit, Windows 32 bit and MacIntel.
These applications will be sent to 64 bit clients.
As with all LLR application projects, there is no advantage of 64 bit over 32 bit.
ATTENTION: The primality program LLR is CPU intensive; so, it is vital to have a stable system with good cooling.
It does not tolerate "even the slightest of errors.
WU's will take ~10 min. on fast/newer computers and 20+ min. on slower/older computers.
If your computer is highly overclocked, please consider "stress testing" it.
Please, please, please make sure your machines are up to the task.

Hoping to get the quad back on line tomorrow afternoon, so should see an increase in crunching then! :DWoodles wrote:Every little helps, at least you're joining in :Dmelter65 wrote:I'll put up a feeble contribution with the lappy's two cores. Not got the quad back yet, waiting for new hdd as old one fried itself :(
Seems to work well with hyperthreading too... gives me 8 WU in just over 10 mins on the Xeon, 4 in just under 10 mins on the Core2 Quad, and 2 on the lappy ( which usually isn't worth bothering with... )
Can't say the same for the sieves running on the GPUs though, 45mins on the 8800, 5hrs or so on the Quadro, and 15hrs on the lappy :p

The organisers have usually coped well with Challenges, and usually cope well with the increased traffic levels and higher peak traffic; but something is really amiss with this one. I keep being taken out for periods of an hour or two without WUs because upload/download is borked. If I baby sit it, I can usually get round most of it, but leave it for an hour or more is asking for trouble on my main machine. I've lost 4 hours crunching today alone on that machine.
The problem is certainly surfacing elswhere too, there are increasing posts about it on the Challenge thread. Not much we can do but keep an eye open for it, and muddle through to its closure tomorrow.
I hope their usuall high standards return for other Challenges, because this is not good at all, by any measure.

Last contact I had showed over 500 WUs waiting for validation and with no contact for the past two and a half hours, I have no idea how I'm doing in the challenge and no way of adding to my total even if I wanted to :(
Sadly I'm giving up on this challenge and switching to a project that can at least supply WUs as it's too cold without all the cores running flat out :)

They turned off Validation to try and concentrate server out put on WU supply, so there's vertually no stats to record. I've got 1,600 WUs in pendings waiting validation.
I reckon another couple of hours and there will not be many left to crunch in it anyway. Lots are drifting away from the Challenge already, looking at various comments on various Boards.
EDIT:
Comment from Lennart on the PG Chat Line:
"I am working on it I am trying to find why it not load more work."

My account page says I've found three primes, but the page the "3" links to says I haven't found any yet... ( until a few mins ago it was saying that the page was disabled ).
Is this just taking a while for them to update or are some primes more "found" than others?
[edit]Ah, one of them has trickled through now[/edit]
