Prime Grid - Earth Day Challenge

Yes, it's Prime Grid challenge time again; an eight day challenge based on the 321 Prime Search starting at 18:00 UTC tomorrow.

According to the PG site the average time per work unit is 17 hours (it actually says 16:60:56 ?). So, for the faster machines, you are probably looking at something in the 14-15 hour range.

I slightly underestimated the difference from the "average". The following was just posted in the PG forum, and is probably worth repeating here in full in case anyone is new to PrimeGrid...

"ATTENTION: The primality program LLR is CPU intensive; so, it is vital to have a stable system with good cooling. It does not tolerate "even the slightest of errors." Please see this post for more details on how you can "stress test" your computer. WU's will take ~8-12 hours on fast/newer computers and 20+ hours on slower/older computers. If your computer is highly overclocked, please consider "stress testing" it. Sieving is an excellent alternative for computers that are not able to LLR.

Restricted airflow is one of the primary reasons for overheating. Take the time to monitor the fans and review the dust buildup. If needed, give your computer a good cleaning. It will thank you by running cooler and producing valid results.

Please, please, please make sure your machines are up to the task."

16/17 hours is probably close enough as to not make that much difference!

I've just fired up my 3 beasties and we are on the way

i7 920 @ 3.33 is showing 10 hours per task running 8
Q9650 @ 3.0 is showing 7 hours per task running 4
Q6600 @3.0 i have no idea cos i still haven't found myself a kvm switch.

My Q6600 @ 2.4 GHz is, after 7% of a workunit, showing just under 11 hours. Yours should be about 9 or so?

On the other side of the coin; my 750 MHz P4 is showing 119 hours

It should add 1 WU to the total though ...

Nice one. I think the times will slip a little till some complete.

I have to keep swapping cables to see it since my sons monitor died and he aquired my spare.

Might put switch on my Birthday wish list just to see the blank stares when i have to explain

Minor glitch on the q6600. I've lost a day

I didn't go quite far enough when i eased it back for LLR'ing. Errors for the first 8 tasks and i didn't realise till i checked at work

had to wait till now to take it back another notch or 3.

running at 2.85 now and have switched cables so i can keep eye on it since the other one is running sweetly

You could install Free VNC on it Madas :D It would save having to keep switching screens, and you could just remotely control it across the LAN.

i've tried 3 different linux distros on it but can't get the screen to update. if i click on the viewed desktop i have to quit and then log in again to see the change. scimmed a million Kb articles but no joy. Screen refresh option doesn't help amd i've worked through the suggestions......no joy

I've tried connecting from inside and outside the network and now i'm through a bt home hub i can only connect to vnc locally

Thats why i was strongly looking at kvm switches.....£23 and very much solved i hope :)

You're welcome. I've got a script that does most of the work, so it's really just a matter of remembering to run it at the appropriate time...

... which I forgot to do today because, as the weather was so pleasant, I took the pooch for a longer walk than usual

Phew that was a long hard warm back bedroom slog
