2010 Classical Crunch

I've noticed that it's over a year since we had a team crunch so it's about time we had one!!

As it's such a long time and we've had many new members I'm sure some will want to know what a crunch is.

It's just a way of bringing as many members together to switch resources for a common cause. We'll have a target which usually changes towards the end as I always underestimate what we can achieve! We'll have a project which usually needs a bit of help for one reason or another. Members can join in any time for part or all the session.

No prizes - just a sense of well being to be part of a terrific team!

Anyway - what's the details?

We're going to have a 7 day Crunch on...

Leiden Classical

Members that are not all ready attached can do so via the BOINC Manager - don't forget to make sure that you join the team as well!

You can also join manually via http://boinc.gorlaeus.net/

This is a 7 day crunch starting at 20:00 Sunday 31st January, ending 20:00 Sunday 7th February. Members are free to join in and leave whenever they wish.

Work units (WUs) take around 45 to 120 minutes on a modern PC with Windows. Quorum of 2, with the credit granted being the lower of the 2 claimed (which is around the low 20's per WU).

Been going since May 2006 with no discernable downtime so very stable.

72 team members have crunched this. We're 42nd in the World so we do need a bit of a boost there!

End of Day One Stats

Bit of a slow start but I'm fairly sure it's due to us having to wait for the wingmen to report. As we go through the week this will be less of an issue as the WUs done earlier get verified.

However, this means that the per hour rate has increased from 443/hour to 485/hour.

On the plus side we've had our BEST EVER day! That's with waiting for WU verification, tomorrow should be ever better.

Shouldn't need to worry about the pendings too much. They've got 5 day deadlines, so the turnaround is fairly quick.

Radio Caroline has only one Leiden cruncher in their "team" so they probably won't be able to up their game much but, even though you have 77 members to our 20, we'll do our heroic best to hold you off! [At least until sunday night. ]

As predicted, we had an great day yesterday! Up another world place and our output nearly doubled again.

However...

As you've no doubt all ready seen TSBT aren't happy!

The aim of the crunch is to get to UK#1 - whether we keep it or not is moot. But TSBT are going to make that aim a little harder than anticipated!

Their current output is half ours but increasing and they'll overtake Radio Caroline before we get there. They might get there in less than 3 days, we'll take around 5 days assuming current rates. So by the time we get there, TSBT will be a few thousand ahead and UK#1.

Whatever happens it's going to be interesting!

BTW I don't quite understand your stats: You credit RC with having gained 14,790 today whereas I make it just 419. There was a similar discrepancy yesterday.

I agree with your overall analysis that it is going to be close. At this rate we should overtake RC on Thursday and you will kick them when they are down sometime on Saturday. After that you should continue to close but I doubt if you will have caught us by close of crunch on Sunday.

But whatever happens, remember, we aren't trying to spoil your fun, just making sure that you earn it!

Gained = difference between day and difference previous day. IE How much UBT gained on the team - not how much their gained total.

Anyhoo, enough arithmetical pedantry,  TSBT have picked up pace overnight and we are now just 5K behind Radio Caroline so I reckon we will pass them today. UBT are still gaining on us but fairly slowly - the gap is still about 40K

How things can change in just 24 hours!

TSBT managed to add over 20,000 in since the last update and have become UK#1!
We produced just over 18,000. Steve (Merlyn) produced 17,000 of theirs, so whether he can keep that up should be fun to watch!

Temujins stats show hourly output being TSBT = 860/hour, UBT = 774/hour.

I reckon that you would need at least 30K per day (1250/hr) to be in with a chance of catching us. Still that can hardly be impossible can it?

Things are certainly hotting up! At 8AM update... Merlyn puts in 2,434, Daniel hits back with 1,380! Now that Merlyns 6,000 has dropped out of the 24 hour stats, our daily average is once again (just) higher than theirs. Not quite enough to make UK#1 by Sunday... yet!

Just over three days to go. Plenty of time if anyone else wants to jump in!

UBT will be overtaking RC by elevenses tomorrow. I'm not sure about the 21 days to overtake TSBT but it surely isn't going to be less than 3 days unless you can raise your output to over 40K per day.  :D

There seems to be an internal squabble developing between Tim and Dan as to who will be the top cruncher. Watch your backs guys - Keith is sneaking up on you both!

Well done on getting the #2 slot. As regards numero uno, we are still 37K ahead and even if TSBT were to cease crunching Leiden forthwith I think our pending credit would be enough to carry us first over the line in 42 hours.

As for Leiden's poor productivity I wholeheartedly agree. It makes WCG look bountiful in the extreme & I for one will be quite happy to park my personal ambition at 10K.

So there it is -  the end of the first 2010 crunchathon.

One of the more interesting ones once TSBT decided to join in (hi guys!).

Although we didn't get the primary objective of UK#1 we gave it a good try and at least we gained 9 world places and UK#2! A couple of more weeks and we might have got UK#1 but as the project gives out such poor credits I doubt that anyone would want to stay on it that long - besides I'm also sure Steve wouldn't have made it easy!

Well done everyone who took part.

We'll have another one in a few weeks, but if you're after a challange the next PrimeGrid is due in a few days.
