Gauntlet help - How to install Chicken Soup

Hi all,

(This thread is for Windows/Linux based OS - if running MAC, then check here )

If you are running a Windows, Linux, Alpha/IA64, FreeBSD or HPUX OS, the you can download the SETI optimised application from here:

(making sure you pick the right one for your CPU)

If you're not sure which CPU you have, then download this:

http://www.cpuid.com/download/cpu-z-141.zip

and see what CPU and whether it supports MMX, SSE, SSE2 or even SSE3.

To unpack the soup, you'll need the 7-zip utility from here:

http://www.7-zip.org/

Then use the 7-zip progam to unzip the soup file...you'll then get a directory called "files to install".....

Just STOP BOINC. Then copy all the files from the "Files to install" directory into the "BOINC/projects/setiathome.berkeley.edu" directory.

Then restart BOINC and in the messages screen it should say

Found app_info.xml; using anonymous platform

That's it....

The benefit of using the Soup is that each WU will be crunched faster, allowing you to return more WUs per day...!

Where Boinc projects show on the "your computers" bit this sort of detail (for example)

Although, TBH, my quad Intel CPU, shows as being "SSE2" and yet there is a separate SSE3 soup version for the Core 2....

so I'm using the specific Core 2 soup....seems to be working fine.

its worth noting also that on linux systems SSE3 is sometimes referred to as pni ie

My PC is SSE3 capable too, but I see the app is for Intel only

Found a work unit crunched by a pc with the same cpu as mine but without the app, quite a difference...

As Timbo said, its just a case of getting the right soup, stopping boinc, copy the files into the seti project directory and starting boinc, easy huh

Why do you say nothing happens?
what are you expecting to happen?
boinc manager should look just as it did before, the only thing you'll notice is the "anonymous platform" message in the messages tab just as you restart boinc

Not getting the anonymous platform come up it just runs as normal.
No Errors nothing I'm using the AMD version sse2 even though my 5600+ has sse3 as well I dunno

Just had a moment of clarity stopped BOINC went to the files I'd put into the dir and double clicked the alien head icon and started BOINC again and there it is the message found annon app .

The various versions of Chicken soup are compiled with Intels ICC compiler and Intel have been found to have been naughty in the "does this chip use SSE3" bit of code.
It seems that if you don't have an Intel chip it bombs out.

Some clever chap had written a patch that gets around this problem, if you're feeling brave have a look here
I don't run any SSE3 AMD CPUs so therefore haven't had a need to run the patch.

Seemed like a good idea after drinking the wine first.
A word of warning ........
Although its fine to use any old Sparkling wine cork wire for a P2 or p3
your better off using the wire from a champagne cork when bodging a P4 or above ensuring better heat transfer .
Why endanger a quad core using anything less that a bottle of Moët :lol:

Think you have to use notepad, but as i am only a thicko train driver, not a computer boffin not sure how to do it.

Your CPU should do SSE2 and probably SSE3 even though your seti page for that computer doesn't show any CPU flags.

You don't have to use notepad, not sure where you got that from

Download the above, you'll probably need to download 7zip too (link on the same page)
Un7zip into a directory somewhere and there should be a Files_To_Install directory.
You stop boinc, then copy all of the files from that directory into (usually) C:\Program Files\BOINC\projects\setiathome.berkeley.edu and restart boinc, just like Tim said

Hi,

(Assuming you use Windoze).

First, you need do is to unzip the archived soup files using 7-zip utility.

Then use the "Start > My Computer" link to open "File Manager" and then navigate to the directory where you unzipped the soup files to, and then select all the files in the "File to Install" directory, using the "File > Select ALL" function and then use the "File > Copy to folder" function to copy the files (should be three of them) and direct these to your SETI folder, making sure you've ALREADY EXITED from BOINC......!

Then once copied, close "My Computer", restart BOINC and to be sure, when you click on the "Task" tab in BOINC, the "Show graphics" button will be greyed out (coz soup doesn't support graphics) when you click on a SETI WU.

One thing to note.
If you are running on windows vista you may find that the chicken soup will not run.
You may find this thread over in the optimized aps section of use.

Yipppe .Chicken soup running on all machines now with no problems :lol:
Still early days but gone from 230 credits a day to 350+ on my 2.8 meg p4

If you haven't installed it yet ..........DO it now !

Left SETI running today on this Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 3.40GHz and there was a long list of this stuff

This wu "21mr07ac.24986.13569.5.6.69" took over 10 hrs for a massive 54 credits, the other was over 8 hrs for 89% completion.
I had the auto install soup quite a few months ago do I need to change it/ does this just happen with some wu's/or any other suggestion (5 credits an hour is poo-in the time these 2 were running cosmo would have given 400 to 800 credits compared to around a 100 on SETI)

You have to compare like for like - the other guy is running Linux which makes comparisons a bit difficult. However, it shouldn't be that wide a margin! The only other thing I can see at the moment is that you're running version 5.8.15 - we're up to 5.10.28 so updating that might help.

yes get the newest version ....but i would also look in your project folder to see what version of soup you have .....should have at least SSE2 ( i think )

I did the auto install on my p3 1100 and it gave me the MMX version
Have now put SSE on ..

I assume it is cr*p vista which is the problem (I used amdsse2)..is it really really really easy to fix this? if it is then how, otherwise I will just run without it.

Hi Mark, I run three AMD machines all with the SSE2-AMD soup, and the 6000+ machine runs Vista Pro 32bit OS.
I have also upgraded all machines to 5.10.28 without any problems, I think my first step would be to try a project reset, or detatch and reattach and reload the soup?

Nothing would work for me with soups and vista.
If you look on the linky above crunch3r states that it solves the vista issues.
Plus the fact that these are quicker again than the soups (some of them).

Looked at that link first saw

2.4V_Windows_x32_SSE2_AMD.zip
2.4V_Windows_x32_SSE2_AMD_GFX.zip

didn't know which one of those to use then saw the stuff about it was a mirror site went there (soup) where there is only one download to chose for each version and assumed it was the same stuff as it was a mirror site, guess not

Presumably if I detach from Seti that will get rid of soup, once reattached do I copy one or both of the above into the Seti folder?

Yeah, from memory when you detatch you wipe the Seti folder from the projects folder and all the contents of the seti folder goes! Reattach and then copy the soup into the seti folder and away you go!! In theory that is :shock:

One has not graphics, the later is with graphics.
Thats the only difference.
Just download and install the one you want

With/without graphics duh, how simple could that be

Thanks, looks ok so far running 8 mins without a problem....given my just about zero competence with these things would it be worthwhile using the cruncher3 ones instead of soup which I have on my other machines?

And for me it was the only way to get optimized apps to run on vista.
No matter what i was unable to run the lunatics aps.
I'm very glad that crunch3r has returned with these, otherwise it may of been another clean install back to xp.

I'm getting these sort of messages from every 'tekky' podcast I listen to! One even went as far as saying, "Vista is the biggest crock of sh*t to come out of Redmond!" A lot of these people are going back to XP! It would seem a lot of shiny beads and glass doesn't make a good OS after all!

oh dear ! I have fallen in to the biff corner once again . I found the cruncher link , cheked which app i should download and then copied the files to install. The insrtuctions say to copy them in to BOINC/projects/setiathome.berkeley.edu folder. I can only find one BOINC folder which has loads of files but no subfolders. I copied the files to install there and clicked on the alien head and said yes to run. I restarted comp but there is no difference and I have not seen the message found app-info.xml. I have gone back into BOINC file and tried to run the app again but to no avail. I have searched the computer but have not found any more BOINC folders stashed away.

The solution is pobably very easy but from the depths of biff corner I can't see it :shock:

Please help Obi one you are my only hope ........

you probably have a recent version of Boinc (+v6.2) which has split the programs and data into separate folders.
Have a look in C:\Documents and Settings/All Users/Application Data/ you may have another boinc folder in there and if so, it will contain a projects folder and that will contain the seti folder where you put the files

For Vista/Windows7 it's in C:\ProgramData\BOINC\projects\setiathome.berkeley.edu

If your using Vista then you will have to set view hidden folders to true to be able to see the 'ProgramData' folder.

Control Panel > Folder Options > Click on the view tab > Select 'show hidden files and folders' > Click ok

Thanks Ben, that did the trick and i found the file. I copied the app in to them. I think it is working as when i restarted all the tasks disappeared from my list - yes I did panic and shout a bit, but then as i was preparing to open the last of my emergency chocolate it requested lots of work and I now have tasks called seti enhanced.

I hope i havent rotted up the tasks that were running before, if I have and they have aborted will I go to the seti naughty spot ??

You should now see in one of the messages the following:
SETI@home|Found app_info.xml; using anonymous platform

That means you are using the new modified application. Some of the tasks may have been aborted, but any new tasks should be using the new optimized application.

Your best configuration would be to go for one of these 2:
» 2.4V Windows x32 SSE2 Intel
» 2.4V Windows x32 SSE2 Intel+GFX

The gfx bit means if you want to you can view whats going on (but it's more of a gimmic then anything else)

Ahh, my bad. However, the lunatics website looks as though it's up for sale and just has adverts? Nothing that i could see regarding BOINC.

Did you download the newer version from http://lunatics.kwsn.net? Or the older version?

I'm not sure the older version will still work now.

Downloaded the newer version. Looks like the wu I have will finish in about an hour (43% after 26 mins). When downloaded showed run time of over 14 hours so a massive improvement. If anyone else needs Seti Optimized App, I recomend this one.. It's BRILL

Now running the new app for normal seti wu's (not astropulse) and taking about 100mins/wu

Another n00b question!

Can I install the astropulse app at the same time as the normal seti app, therefore getting both normal wu's and astropulse wu's both using the optimised apps?
