Just how much does it cost to go quad?

Post by cris keys »

OK assuming you have a PC and some basic ability to plug stuff together    I wondered how much it would cost to upgrade to a Quad.

A basic motherboard for £34.07
http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?Qu ... PageMode=1

Cheap but fast DDR2 RAM for overclocking £47.49
http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?Qu ... PageMode=1

The mighty Q6600 £164.92
http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?Qu ... PageMode=1

Add £7 for delivery and you can upgrade for £253.48

AND a 320Gb SATA hard disk if you only have UDMA :P £48.11
http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?Qu ... 4,45560000

So come on people there no excuse for not having a Quad!  8)

Hi Cris,

Don't forget a mega heatsink to take away all that excess heat (if you're overclocking). The stock Intel jobby is OK, but I wouldn't want to rely too much on it.

You could also look at these http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/spec ... l?BB-Q660N
Novatech are doing 9 months interest free credit so IF you can save £10 a week it would pay for the bare bones version after you have paid the deposit!! And its free delivery cos total cost is over £400 !
So there is no real excuse boys n gilrs, I bet most of us waste more than that £10 on booze n fags a week?

We have a quad thread over at CPDN which includes a couple of suggested configurations:

http://www.climateprediction.net/board/ ... 85&start=0

I was in Tesco on monday doing the weekly shop, and noticed a quad-core, 2GB RAM, 1TB HD PC being sold for about £600.  Mein Gott!  At Tesco!! My first home-built PC cost £1,600, and had a 486 processor, MS-Dos 6.2, 16MB of ram... <eek>.

If I want go quad Intel that means, new CPU + new mobo.
Or if I go AMD Quad it means Bios upgrade + new CPU.

However I'm not realy to sure about the AMD Phenoms.
And those G0 stepping quad intels do sound nice....

but meh!!! I love mah AMD T-Shirt :(

I realy do need to stop smoking...
lets see £4.29 a day
£30.03 a week
£120.12 a month (for a 4 week month)
£150.15 a month (for a 5 week month)
£1561.56 a year (yipes!)

So err dang looking at that kind of makes me realise just how much I'm wasting :S

So, I'm making you the first honourary member of the "UBT Got to Give Up Smoking" ranking....

Anyone else fancy having this plaudit added to your profile as a "gentle reminder"...???

Yeah, me thinks on Tuesday I'll be buying my self some of that horrible tasting gum.
Can't buy the nice(er) tasting stuff as I get adicted to that!

Last time I gave up I managed to go for 36 weeks.
4 weeks on the gum then the rest cold turkey.
And geez that was hard as everyone I know smokes.
Mind you I guess this smoking ban (even though it's lame), will kind of help as at least I won't have it in my face when I'm out eating (as all you smokers know you always want a ciggie after food)
But the 36 weeks ended the day I kicked the (ex)Wife out the door.
Had a very good reason to stop for those 36 weeks but thats personal.

I guess I do have another good reason too stop now
As looking at the family history on both my Mum & Dad's sides all the males have either developed heart problems in their 50's or died of heart attacks in their 50's (my dad included).
And 50 is 19 years from now for me, and I sure want to live a lot longer than 50 odd!

So the ikkle voice in the back of my mind has been getting a bit louder the last year or so, guess it's time to listen to it.

Sorry for the waffle, got a lot going on in my head at the mo.

Hi Ian,

Without trying to sound too "righteous", I gave up back in 1986 (approx - can't remember the exact date) and have never looked back since.

So, it IS possible - you just have to get over the "hump" of the addiction, after which it should be plain sailing.

I did it by setting myself a "target", which was based on both the financial saving I was hoping to make, as well as improving my overall fitness. And when the pang of nicotine came calling, I just reminded myself why I was giving up.

Seems to have worked for me!

I gave up so long ago I can't actually remember when it was

All I can remember is that it cost 50p for 20 B&H  :!:
Very large amount of water under the bridge scince then...
My children have never seen me with a cigarette, the eldest will be 21 in June, so must be over 30 years as I gave up long before that.
Stick with it, it can be done.

I'll do moi best :)

As for the Quad core stuff, Just read that the new Revision of the AMD Phenom (B3 Silicon) still has the L3 bug, so they working on a B4 Silicon (due May).

Next upgrade is looking more like Intel to me....

AMD say that the B3 is actually OK despite some news reports today to the contrary.  But on the other hand, the Phenom is about the same speed as a nonoverclocked Q6600, and Intel has the 45mn chips coming very soon which are 20% faster and very highly overclockable.  So not looking good for AMD.

Err...I think you're mixing reality with fantasy....

The fantasy world has: scriptwriters who make it appear that old men can still "pull" a foxy bird and to old slags that they are not worthy of a paper bag when they are being shagged....

And in both cases, it gives hope to the "hopeless" - s'pose that's why 25% of the population watch it.

I say "Shame on the BBC" for trying to raise peoples hopes...!

And yes, I'll create a "club" for you as well....! Anymore?

I was just gonna back up whats already been said don't go with the Phenom just yet it's not quite there yet and I also am a AMD person, they are just so far behind Intel at the moment
I personally think having read just about anything I could lay my mouse on that it's gonna be a while and even then the AMD will not overclock anything like the current Q6600.
So for me it's sell up my AMD's and in with the newer Q6600's
And as for the giving up the fag's I'm down to just 5 a day now nearly quit
I know that's still smoking but it's close.
Besides Ive got my Back operation coming up soon and have to quit for that.

Mind you I do also know of a peep that smokes one ciggie a day.

You probably just got better Drs.
One here seem to be bottom of the barrel most of the time.

"Oh you dislocated your hip, broke your leg in 3 places, your ankle and your foot in 5 places, errrr take some paracetamol, bus stop is that way..."
ok maybe the bit about the bus stop was wrong, but it sure seemed like it.

heh I'm sure even Ghandi would have found the need for "that kind of language" while getting his hip put back in place with 8 broken bones.
And people wonder why I don't like stairs  :?

Can anyone recomend a good! cooler for a Q6600 (G0).
I was looking at the Scythe Mugen (Infinity), but err when I seen the pics of it and the size of the thing, I kind of wary or that much weight.

Thinking of getting the Asus P5N-T Deluxe motherboard, if that helps

well system is built....
However having to test the memory sticks 1 at a time as me tinks one (or more) is faulty, as I can't get an os to install :(

*sigh* Technology

*edit

it's not the memory, it all tested fine, works fine in the AMD 6000+ system.
Put the DDR2 667 from that system into the quad one, still pooches on install.
Oh but this is the weird one.
I'm using the quad right now, by using the Knoppix Live DVD!!!!
What the spamcity man!?!?!? :?

*edit 2
And just as I post that it crashed.....
Faulty motherboard?

Got it working.
Seems it's yet another one of ASUS's great heatpipe SNAFU's
Only noticed last night after yet another crash, when I moved some cables about, my knuckle touched the southbridge heatink.

Knuckle got burned!
It was that hot you could put the case on it's side, put yer coffee cup on that, and it would have kept it nice and warm!

I have the side pannel off at the mo, and a 120mm fan inside the case blowing onto the southbridge heatsink.
Only prob is I have no idea how I'm going to get my 8800GTX in there now :?

Wish Id read this post 3 weeks or so back, and Ive had gone quad core instead of just dual ..

Having just checked, my mobo won't run a QC .. and only a slightly faster dual than I already have .

Maybe Ill replace / upgrade in a few months..  :D

and it seems the 4gb ram I have doesnt really benefit crunching :(

If you ever run climate prediction, you will see just how good it is to have 4GB of ram!

As their longest running model recommends having 1.5GB for it.
And it's always better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it :)

If you do decide to go quad core, some advice, research....reasearch and research some more on the Motherboard your thinking of getting.
As if I had found out about the problems with the Q6600 and ASUS P5N-T Deluxe, I would have never ordered that board!

And re-mortgage the cat ,dog, gerbil, goldfish, house and sell your soul to Santa.

I gots a 22" Widescreen and 19" TFT on the computer that's usualy used on.
Love it in Supreame Commander (dual monitor games FTW!).
But ouch at times it does struggle when doing 1680x1050 & 1280x1024 at the same time.

don't think I'll bother with a Series 9 card, probably wait untill series 10 (or whatever they call it).
Only got the 8800GTX 1 year ago (today, lol), and apart from SupCom it's not fussed yet :)

True.
My friend had a 7800GTX and the 8800GTX made that look silly.

So from 7800GT to 9800??? would be a big step up.
But for me changing to a 9800???, is supposed to only be a 15 to 30% upgrade.

And I got no idea if that's when it's running on a PCI-E 2.0 motherboard.

From what I've read so far, ScullTrail is a bit iffy at the moment and they have a few problems to iron out, not only that but until others come on board there is only the one mobo to choose from.
