Welcome to Part One of the UBT Annual Sweepstake competition!
We've decided to have a little sweepstake on how many credits we'll have by the end of this year and promote 'Children In Need' (CIN) at the same time.
To keep things really simple all you have to do is predict how many credits (according to BOINStats) we'll have at year end.
However, there's a little proviso!
You have to pledge an amount of cash to CIN. How much is totally up to you. However, there is a £2.00 minimum donation on the CIN site. We think that 50p per guess is a nice figure. So £2 will get you 4 guesses (although we'd like to think you'd consider having more than 4 guesses !!).
The sweepstake is open now and will remain open until 23:59 Friday 16th November - CIN night.
I suppose you want to know what you get out of it apart from the good feeling you get out of donating to charity!
You saw the hint about a cheesy prize? Well that's it! Cheese! (Well what do you expect? A brand new PC or something?) A special cheese. It is with great pleasure I can reveal that the prize is a 200g extra mature 'Black Bomber' Cheddar truckle in black wax from the 'Snowdonia Cheese Company' (via Tescos).
UPDATE: 31st Aug - Timbo added a packet of Chocolate Hobnobs to the prize !!
A bit of a naff prize but, hey, it really is all about charity! If anyone wants to add to the prize fund feel free to PM me or UBT - Mikee, but remember you have to pay postage!
So how do you enter?
Easy! Just post, in this thread, your prediction along with how much you'll pledge to CIN.
For instance on the 29th August you might post...
"I'll donate £2 and my guesses are:
110,000,000
110,000,050
110,100,000
111,150,000"
on the 3rd September you might be feeling flush and go...
"I'm feeling flush today so here's another £3!
I'll go for
109,150,200
110,000,100
111,111,111
115,100,250
117,200,000
120,100,100"
That's it! You can enter as many times as you like, whenever you like, up to a minute to midnight on the closing date.
You need to make your donation via the CIN website here:
http://www.justgiving.com/ukboincteam-cin
Please ensure you enter "UBT" and your BOINC username into the "my message" section of the donation. That way we can watch the total rise and attribute YOUR donation to your guesses!
There's a £500 target but that's purely arbitrary.
A running total via the CIN site will be posted along with details on how to send your money direct to them.
So that everyone knows where they are in the sweep I'll post a table up with names, predictions and confirmed donations later on. Keep an eye on this as there cannot be any duplicate entries. If there are, then only the first entry will be valid. If this happens myself or Mikee (if we notice!) will PM the duplicate entry maker to ask for a different prediction.
Hopefully we can generate a useful donation to CIN and have a bit of fun at the same time....many thanks for taking the time to read this far and a BIG THANK YOU if you are entering.
The Small Print!
1 - Closing date is 23:59 GMT 16/11/2007.
2 - Only UBT forum members resident in the UK may win the prize. (Non-Forum Members should join up ASAP - while members outside the UK can enter but no prize I'm afraid!).
3 - Entries must be posted in this thread along with the amount pledged.
4 - Entries that have 'last edited' at the bottom will be disregarded. This is to stop people from changing their entry as the total becomes more predictable.
5 - Subsequent duplicate entries will be disregarded.
6 - The winner will be the person who posted the closest score (either above or below) to the total as reported by BOINCStats on the evening update of 1/1/2008. If, for some reason, BOINCStats does not update then the next available update will be the winning score.
7 - If the actual winner is excluded by rule 2, then the prize will go to the person next closest who is not excluded by rule 2.
8 - In the extremely unlikely event of a tie (i.e. 1 person 1000 credits over, another 1000 under) the person who posted first will be deemed the winner.
9 - UBT reserves the right to change the prize in the event of the prize not being available. One of similar value will be substituted in that event.
10 - UBT reserves the right to change the rules!
11 - Any decisions made by the Judges is final, binding and beyond reproach, including the time when we check the BOINCstats website to see the final total for the year!

Bump !!
OK - I'm surprised that only three members have entered....(so far)!
I know the closing date isn't for 2½ months...but it would be nice if a few more members could get involved.....
After all, it's not everyday that you get the chance to win a big cheese !!
Of course, if you'd also like to win a packet of Chocolate HobNobs, then I'll gladly add that to the prize on offer....
regards
Tim

End of Year Sweepstake (Part 1) with cheesy prize!
Hi
What an excellent idea - and here are my guesses

114,500,001
114,000,001
114,100,001
113,009,990
er..
er..
This is fun and worth while, even though I love Hob Nobs, I can't think of any more numbers and who cares? It's for a good cause.
Well done

Wow a tenner! That's extremely generous! Thank you very much. I might have to add to the cheese fund if we get any more like your kind donation.
If fact tell you what...
If the total gets to, say £50, a 'little Red Devil' might appear!
as well as a 'Black Bomber'!
Anyway, plenty of time.
I expect people are just waiting to see what sort of score to go for before committing.

Hey - it's not that big a cheese!UBT - Timbo wrote: After all, it's not everyday that you get the chance to win a big cheese !!

Given the size of your donation, (and at current rates of 50p per guess), I think you're still due another 15 guesses....
Let me know and I'll add them to the list.

Don't worrry about it....HobNobs can do that to a person - even if it's just the mere mention of the words....UBT - Granville wrote:Hi
Sorry Guys, got carried away with the thought of winning a packet of Hob Nobs and totally misread the posting for the donation. I'm afraid you won't find a UBT member called " I Love Hob Nobs"...

Besides, you have used your username on the donation page anyways, so it can be properly attributed to your good self...!
thanks and regards,

And just think: If you (or anyone else) has taken their savings out of Northern Rock, by donating to this "draw", we've saved you money.....coz instead of maybe being lost, it'll go to a "good cause"...
Either way, MANY grateful thanks for your kind donation.

Random guesses
Since I am determined to get the cheese... :love10:
I have been struggling with some quadratics equations, as well as thumbing through some logarithmic tables, but, since I can't remember how my slide rule works, here are another four guesses. :?

You could try to use one of those Sinclair Cambridge Scientific calculators....you know the one where you entered numbers and functions in reverse order.... at least you'll come up with something that has at least 9 digits...!

Mind you, if you've got a good way of getting rid of moles, I'd appreciate it...our back garden looks like the Somme (except without the gory bits).
S'pose I could just stick the cheese down the hole and hope the smell keeps 'em away....

Hi all,
I just had a thought....the 2007 "vintage" of Beaujolais Nouveau will be released at midnight on 15th November 2007....and CIN night is the following night....
So, what better than to consider having a Cheese and Wine Party in your house (or our chat room) on the evening of the 16th....?
So, you can spend some time and money making a donation to CIN and guessing on the Sweepstake, whilst indulging in some of this years plonk....assuming Tesco / Sainsbury / Waitrose / Morrisons et al pull their finger out and have it available....
Of course, the "Beauj" has some way to come....from somewhere near Macon in France...so it's unlikely it'll be available everywhere in UK
So, the alternative is a nice bottle of Chateau Neuf de Pape or something similar...!
All in favour, say "Aye"...!
regards
Tim
PS Please supply your own cheese and wine !!

Just a little note.
It looks like we're on for another record monthly credit. We hit 6 million today which is TWO days ahead of when we hit 6 million last month! As there is an extra day this month compared to last month we should get around 7.8 Million!
If we carry on at this rate the 8 million month isn't far away, which means that members who have donated to the CIN page may need to update their guesses. Those that haven't are playing a cagey game and waiting in order to win the cheese! (Aren't you?)
Yes, all right, it's a shameless plug to 'bump' this thread.

We're at £62....and it would at least be nice to hit the £100 mark.
There's just 9 DAYS to go to Children In Need night....so dig deep people and let's make this contribution a little more worthwhile......PLEASE ??

Hi all,
Another BUMP...!
Just over 3 days to go (until midnight on CIN night) to register your guesses to the "End of Year" sweepstake...!
C'mon people....wouldn't you just love to be cuddled up with a nice big cheese (and more perhaps?) sometime in early January 2008, coz you guessed the number nearest to the total team credit as at year end 2007.
Get those brains working, make some guesses and please make a donation to CIN....!

Hi all,
OK, so I'm going to try and SAVE you all loads money now.
I'm NOT asking you to bid for Led Zeppelin tickets - so I've already saved you £83,000 !!!
And I'm NOT asking you to bid for a fun day at the next British Grand Prix - so that's another £100,00 you've saved...
And as for the Aled Jones/Katie Melua "double act" ...well, in your dreams people, so that's saved you another £250,000....
That means you've now saved over £433,000.....
So, time for you to dive into your wallet or purse and dig out a few coins of the realm, to the value of 50p per guess....
You've got until the witching hour tomorrow night.......
regards

Well, you could always just wear the sweatshirt and cap... and then use the cable for some other purpose....might be useful for towing your car...? Or use it to lash down your tent in a storm....? Or maybe tieing up some Chrissy pressies ????
In fact, the list is endless....so I'll stop now...!

Hi all,
I have now officially closed the Sweepstake Part 1.
All entries are now confirmed as can be seen on the first page of this thread.
Many thanks to all the members who have generously donated towards the Children In Need charity. We've amassed a very acceptable £185 as a result of the Sweepstake Part 1.
We'll announce the winner of Part 1 once the stats are confirmed on 1st Jan 2008.
regards
Tim
