Yup - I just took a look at the "Top Teams" on their website - only one team has "scored" any credit - 0.92 !! - from 4 users who have crunched a fair few WUs....!UBT - bobuk wrote:WUs are a wee bit silly atm taking the grand total of 1-2 secs each...
so i think they are still in that big learning curve..
b.
But as you say - it's early days yet.
(I got some Belgian Beer WUs the other night - each lasted 9 seconds !!)
UPDATE: As soon as I'd finisihed writing this and submitting it, I found I had some SciLINC WU's.....!!!!!!
Maybe for a short time we might be #1 in the WORLD !!

Tim

I've set all my computers to no new work from this project as too much CPU time is being used by boinc.exe to process the downloads (and uploads once BOINC gets round to running these WUs).
For example, boinc.exe has used up nearly 5 hours of CPU time to download 100 WUs and that's on my faster PC. The problem is even more acute on slower PCs - nothing else gets a look in.
So be very careful with this project. I'm going to wait until they sort out the file transfers.

Just in process of getting some WUs. First one is also being uploaded. Each WU seems to consist of loads of small files, both down and uploading. This is causing the Boinc client to grind to a halt. They should probably try to amalgamate their files into one larger file to take the pressure off. I remember other projects having similar teething problems. Their upload server seems to be struggling a bit at present.

All these files mean the client_state.xml file gets very large which just exacerbates the problem.
Another problem is that the WUs do not get distributed across different hosts. There are cases where the same WU is sent multiple times to the same host.
All in all lots of problems and no message board to report these on.
But I suppose that's part of the fun testing Alpha projects.

Now well over an hour into my first upload/download cycle with Scilinc. Boinc client is at about 98%CPU, Boinc Manager is useless. Doesn't get a look in so can't tell what's going on. network usage dropped to a crawl, about a dozen packets up/downloaded then nothing for 30 seconds or so. I believe boinc uses a separate connection for each transfer so probably having problems with the large no of connections to host plus many users trying to get WUs. Hopefully things will quieten eventually.

Hi all,
I can only concur with you on this....
Bob advised that some WUs were available early this morning.
So, (with hindsight) I rather foolishly suspended my other WUs and let BOINC download some....I ended up with over 150...!
It started downloading them and I left it overnight to carry on....although I did allow the other projects to resume, as Bob advised the SciLINC WUs were typically 9 seconds long!
This morning - disaster.
BOINC Manager is "Not responding" and although (in Task Manager) I can see that some WUs are "crunching", BOINC Manager is just "blank" with no menu and there's no way to "control" anything.
It probably doesn't help that the SciLINC website is slow and unresponsive....if it was quicker, then u/l and d/l would be improved and maybe BOINC Manager has a chance!!
Nett Result: Only Download SciLINC (for now) if you don't mind having problems....!
As for BOINC Manager - I'll just leave it for an hour or two....the applications are working - it's just the GUI that needs a good "kicking"...!
regards
Tim

But at present the only task really running is boinc.exe! The wcg WU that should be processing is getting 1% CPU about once a minute.
Just checked on the My Account page at their website. It's trying to send me 250 WUs most of which are duplicates. (At least one WU is duplicated 5 times).
One WU it sent had a 30min deadline and has timed out already.
I've still got my boincmgr screen visible and it appears to refresh about once every 15 mins. (At least if you remove another app from on top of it it the data re-appears after 15 mins). Network usage is minimal with just occasional packets sent and received and I agree with the comments about client-state. Mine is up to about 12Mb at present though it has gone down by 1k in the last 15 mins.
I've suspended SCILINK on all but the machine thats got the WUs for now and whem I can get into boincmgr on that one set it to NO New Tasks

Hi Rod,
You're lucky and can get into BOINC Manager....!
I'm frozen out with "Not responding" messages.
I know the four projects that have WUs downloaded and in each case, none of the projects have received any uploads since 00:09 last night - a full hour before BOINC tried to download all this SciLINC stuff....
Fortunately, the WUs I have are all "short-ish" - the Cosmology are around 30 mins, the ABC's around 2 hrs and I had 1 WCG which didn't have long to go.
So, I've now been able to re-start BOINC, having first re-installed 5.10.6 (hoping that that might help - it didn't) and while it was trying to connect to "localhost" I was able to switch off network activity....
So, hopefully, it'll just cache any WUs and if I can eventually get back control of BOINC Manager, then I can sort it out....
But I'll leave it for an hour or three and see.
FYI: BOINC.exe is at 50%
and the 2 apps I "appear to" have running are at around 25% each.
BUT, looking in CPU Usage, each app is only working for about 18 seconds, and then it exits and then 2 seconds later it restarts...!
I just hope it's crunching....
regards,
Tim

I didn't say I could get in. Just that id does refresh the screen from time to time. Will head off to local village fair for an hour or to and see if it calms down later. I have noticed that I have got a miniscule credit fot 1 WU though.UBT - Timbo wrote:You're lucky and can get into BOINC Manager....!

I thought I was badly off - seems I got off lightly then!
It downloaded 50 before I stopped it. Took about 60 seconds of computer time to do the lot and 6 hours to upload them! Slowed the PC to a crawl but everything did respond after a delay.
All gone now - back to normal project.
Best of luck everyone else - hope they sort out!

Yup - 9 seconds per WU = tiny credit !!RodEllery wrote:I didn't say I could get in. Just that id does refresh the screen from time to time. Will head off to local village fair for an hour or to and see if it calms down later. I have noticed that I have got a miniscule credit for 1 WU though.
From my side, here's what I've HAD to do.
In Task Manager it seems any other WU was getting a short burst of CPU time and was then being reset.
My stdoutdae.txt file just showed a load of errors....
So, it was out with the scalpel...!
Backed up my client_state.xml file (all 10MB of it) - no wonder BOINC Manager was in a state !!
Then opened the copy (in Wordpad) and had a peer.....most of it was all the SciLINC rubbish....
So, took about an hour to cut out all the junk....there's just so much...
Then saved the edited version as a "client_state-new.xml" , and then into Windows File Manager and renamed the original file as "client-state-orig.xml" (just in case) and then renamed the edited file as "client_state.xml"...and it's a mere 600kb...!
Then for good measure I deleted the SciLinc subdirectory....!
Then crossed my fingers and re-started BOINC....
And it works....fully responsive, linked straight to "localhost"....
And first thing I did was to detach SciLINC, (coz it tried to download a whole load more !!). Cheeky b*gger.
Personally, I think all ALPHA projects should limit any WU download to no more than say 8 per day (as Belgian Beer does)....then we don't all get inundated with rubbish...esp. if it doesn't work...!
I've lost 12 hours of crunching and I'm not going to count how many hairs I've pulled out....
regards
Tim

Hi Tim,
Threre's no need to edit the client_state.xml file. There is a much simpler way - just delete the account_ xml file for the project and restart BOINC. BOINC will tidy things up itself.
However you still need to manually delete the relevant directory under projects.
Hopefully this will save you some effort the next time something like this happens.
I've also transferred team ownership to you.
Cheers

Their server has been offline for a while but I found this on their web site
8:26 June 18, 2007 SciLINC Causing High CPU Load
AlphaLaser and other users on the BOINCstats forums and the BOINC forums have brought to our attention an issue where the large number of files being served up for each workunit are causing high CPU loads in the core BOINC client.
Augustine found a partial workaround to this. It is discussed on .BOINCstats as well.
After the database is back on-line we will be looking into correcting this issue.

Maybe quite a while.

Updates
17:30 June 18, 2007 Corruption Caused by Electrical Problems
We have finished our examination and remote analysis of the main SciLINC server. This lead us to believe that it was the victim of electrical problems. It was later confirmed that there were some transient electrical issues on Saturday in the building where the machine is housed.
Binary junk was found written across a number of log files on this server. Those files belong to various SciLINC processes, MySQL, Apache and the Linux Kernel itself all around 7:02 PM local time Saturday the 16th. That's UTC 00:02 Sunday the 17th. This coincides with a "disturbance in the force" that knocked a number of other machines offline over the weekend as well.
These things should not happen, but they do. There are plans to move the machine to a better location in the next couple of weeks.
At this point we are filing bug reports, as requested in the log files, since MySQL is unable to recover from the transaction logs that are present. As soon as this is done we will be attempting recovery of the database and then work on getting the project back on-line.
We will keep you posted and thank you for your continued support.

I tried signing up to this project today (before reading this forum - silly me!) but they are not accepting any new accounts. Sounds like they've got a few problems to iron out beforehand! Just as well I didn't sign up when you all did because I don't think I'd have had the technical know-how to sort it all out.
I'll keep an eye out and see how it all goes before trying again.

Back soon?

But after all the problems last time, be wary!We expect to release SciLINC back into full production this week. We're in the final stages of testing results from our project and plan to start sending new work units en masse by the end of the week. We will also be accepting new participants at that time. Thanks to all for your continued support as we work out these final few bugs. -Chris, Project Manager
