NOT WANTED NOW: 7200.9 series IDE hard drive (NEW or nearly)

Post by UBT - Timbo »

Hi,

If anyone is wanting to dispose of a NEW or nearly NEW 7200.9 series ATA/100 / IDE type hard drive, with a capacity of anywhere from 20Gb upto 80Gb and prefereably Seagate brand, then please let me know.

(I have a Linux server project underway that requires one of these type drives, so that we can see why the existing firmware and kernel don't recognise them....!)

(There were two on eBay over the last day or so and some other b*gger outbid me on both of them   )

Obviously, a fair price will be paid, depending on condition (and this is for my own use - and has nothing to do with UBT).

regards

Tim

What are you looking to pay Tim, as you could get a new 40Gb Barracuda 7200.9 for a little over £20. Or for £10 more an 80Gb.

Hi Gary,

The real answer is: "as little as I can".
Reason: The drive will not be put into "service" as I just need to see that the drive electronics are recognised by the firmware.

BUT. The drive needs to be "good" (i.e. not defective) as it'll need the OS to be installed on it, so that I can see that the firmware is actually controlling the drive properly....

So, where have you seen them for £20  :?: I've been looking (not too hard tho') for the last month or so - but some of the online people are charging upto £10 for delivery, which is a bit much, on top of the cost of the drive as well (and then VAT on top !).

Of course, in the end, if it's a good supplier, I might just end up buying for my own spare's use, but the existing firmware will not allow a drive over 137Gb, so the top limit is 120Gb.....

But I'm already running 300GB HDD's in my desktop machines.....so, spending more on a 120Gb is a bit wasteful...

regards,

Tim

I've never used the first one so don't know their charges. But Dabs I've used many times and with the bog standard delivery I think they say 3 to 5 days but more often than not I've had it the next day.

80gb one here for £28 (add about £5 for 3 day postage)

Don't know if it will help solve the problem you mention but I've got a 160gb Barracuda in my box that requires kernel 2.4.16 or better

Hi Paul,

The kernel isn't a problem as we're at 2.6.16.

It seems to be an incompatibility between the IDE chipset (Aladdin 1541 @ ATA33) and the so-called backwards compatability of Seagate's ATA100 7200.9 drives. The 7200.7's are OK, but not the 7200.9's.

So, the need is so we can experiment....and then get our hardware guru to investigate and see if we can either tweak the firmware or else maybe find another solution.
