Pentathlon Challenge 2022

This section is where you can post topics related to Challenges from other websites, such as Formula-BOINC, SETI-Germany and BOINCstats, as well as project challenges such as from WCG, PrimeGrid et al.

As a Team, we really want to engage as many team members with these challenges, as this gives us a great way of attracting more members to our Team...plus we get to show our strengths as a Team by (hopefully) doing well in each one.

PS: I have moved lots of topics into this section where they are relevant...as you can see, we've always been happy to take part in Challenges...and long may that continue ;-)

Pentathlon Challenge 2022

Post by UBT - Timbo »

Hi all

I've had an email from the organisers of the SETI.Germany "Pentathlon", that might interest some members:
hi UK BOINC Team,

a lot has changed since SETI.Germany invited to the first BOINC
Pentathlon in 2010. But even twelve years later we are happy to continue
a tradition with you again: The thirteenth BOINC Pentathlon starts in
less than two weeks
(https://www.seti-germany.de/boinc_pentathlon/start.php).

From 5 May, the computers and their owners can once again show what they are capable
of. For a period of two weeks, they once more have to overcome the
various adversities and prove their abilities, but even the Pentathlon
is not sheltered from changes
(https://www.seti-germany.de/boinc_penta ... collapse61):
This year, the former Marathon track features three obstacles, where
bonus credits are up for the grabs. So, what are you waiting for?

Until 2 May, the teams can sign up using this form:
https://www.seti-germany.de/boinc_penta ... eldung.php. We are
already looking forward to your strategies and a great time with you,
because:

It will be exciting again at the BOINC Pentathlon!

Best regards
I've registered UBT as taking part...it's then down to each member to crunch on the specific projects on the relevant set dates and times (over the 2 weeks that the Challenge runs for) and then maybe we can do better than we've achieved in previous years?

regards
Tim

Don't know how this slipped past me for 5 days?
But it sounds interesting, I will give it a go.

Hi Stephen

The one thing with the Pentathlon is you have to be a bit aware of which projects are the ones to crunch, over the course of the 14 days...and some "periods" are quite short, and some are longer...

So, you need to "bookmark" the Pentathlon page so you know when to switch projects...

Hi all

I'll list here the various "disciplines" that will be featured in this years Pentathlon - the start and end dates of each will be listed once known.

To take part, just crunch the listed projects between the dates shown and make sure for each project that you allow your stats to be exported - UBT is already registered so you don't need to do anything else to ensure your crunching will count:

Note that the time of "00:00" refers to midnight of the day just starting, so for example, one minute before 05 May 00:00, it would be 04 May 23:59 !

Obstacle Run - Universe@home - supports CPUs only - tasks have 14 day deadlines - so keep crunching these tasks for as long as you can
===========================
Start: 05 May 2022 00:00 UTC
End: 19 May 2022 00:00 UTC

Start: 06 May 2022 00:00 UTC - 200% bonus given during this time...this might also flush out any NumberField tasks that have been bunkered !
End: 07 May 2022 00:00 UTC

Start: 12 May 2022 00:00 UTC - 150% bonus given during this time
End: 13 May 2022 00:00 UTC

Start: 16 May 2022 00:00 UTC - 100% bonus given during this time
End: 17 May 2022 00:00 UTC

Javelin Throw - Numberfields@home - supports GPUs & CPUs - tasks have 6 day deadlines (perfect for bunkering GPU tasks :-) )
================================
Start: 07 May 2022 00:00 UTC
End: 08 May 2022 00:00 UTC

Start: 09 May 2022 00:00 UTC
End: 10 May 2022 00:00 UTC

Start: 12 May 2022 00:00 UTC
End: 13 May 2022 00:00 UTC

Start: 16 May 2022 00:00 UTC
End: 17 May 2022 00:00 UTC

Start: 18 May 2022 00:00 UTC
End: 19 May 2022 00:00 UTC

Cross Country - PrimeGrid - supports GPUs & CPUs
=======================
Start: 09 May 2022 00:00 UTC
End: 14 May 2022 00:00 UTC

Sprint - SRBase - supports GPUs & CPUs
=============
Start: 13 May 2022 00:00 UTC
End: 16 May 2022 00:00 UTC

City Run - Einstein@home - supports GPUs & CPUs
======================
Start: 14 May 2022 00:00 UTC
End: 19 May 2022 00:00 UTC

Hi all

Three projects now named for the Pentathlon....Universe, NumberFields and PrineGrid so far...just two more disciplines to have projects named and then we'll see how we get on.

Note: In previous years, some events (for some disciplines) took place over multiple dates...so, just keep an eye on the SETI.Germany website:

https://www.seti-germany.de/boinc_pentathlon/start.php

or pop back to this thread and I'll try and keep it updated. :D

UPDATE:

This link shows the overalll stats across all 5 disciplines:

Hi all

After 5 days crunching, we're in 16th place overall (out of 26 teams), and quite a long way back from the front runners. :-(

I am pleased that a few members have contributed to the Pentathlon for the 5 projects that have been announced, and I thought it a good idea to show some stats for the last week, courtesy of BOINCstats:

Universe@home contributors:

https://classic.boincstats.com/en/stats ... st/10/0/20

NumberFields contributors:

https://classic.boincstats.com/en/stats ... st/10/0/46

PrimeGrid contributors:

https://classic.boincstats.com/en/stats ... st/10/0/53

SRBase contributors:

https://classic.boincstats.com/en/stats ... st/10/0/35

Einstein@home contributors:

https://classic.boincstats.com/en/stats ... t/10/0/130

(These are "live" stats and so are only relevant for the next few days...)

So, keep up the good work !

Hi all

The final two events have now been announced and I've updated the posting above to show them:

(link here: viewtopic.php?p=134274#p134274 )

So, you can keep crunching Universe@home CPU tasks until the end of the event at 00:00 UTC on 19th May (which I think is 1am BST on the 19th :o ).

But your GPU(s) (if you have one, or more) might be kept busy switching between the other 4 events, which are supporting NumberFields, PrimeGrid, SRBase and Einstein@home projects, over various days until the Pentathlon ends.

I tried Prime and Numbers, but it was too painful so I'm sticking with Universe. Mind you, progress is slow there as well, I have 1650 wu's pending validation :tap:

Hi Stephen

Yup - sadly, UBT has not done as well on this Challenge as we might have...though in truth, we've never done spectacularly well for this event in previous years - somehow, we just don't seem to have enough enthusiasm to compete in a meaningful way.

But we'll battle on and one day, we might do better....and in the meantime, at least the projects involved will see a nett increase in completed tasks from those teams who do get involved. :-)

There are still just a few days to go, and at least I doubt we will finish last ;-) (unlike Eurovision, though we did pretty well this year and could have won if Putin hadn't invaded :violence-rapidfire: :violence-ripper: Ukraine )

I think the Pentathlon has broken Universe@Home  I have 500 wu's completed, but can't upload them, no new tasks coming down. Can't get new wu's for Einstein either :(

I'm pretty sure if it wasn't for these problems, we would be in the top 5 ;)

Hi Stephen

Yup - Universe@home has had issues since about 3 or 4 days after the Pentathlon started...but the server is working - it is just being overloaded with upload and download requests...and the validator cannot keep up either.

But it's the same for everyone, so we just have to hope the admins there can keep it ticking over...and then'll it'll be a race for the line to get as many tasks completed and uploaded by tomorrow (Wednesday) night !

In fact, I downloaded quite a few Universe tasks in advance and one of my two hosts has been purposely "offline" for a day or so, as I also have a stash of NumberFields tasks in my "bunker", all ready to upload tomorrow. :-)

I also made a choice not to crunch any Einstein tasks, simply so I could concentrate on the NumberFields GPU tasks. ;-)

Hi all

So, the Pentathlon is over for another year...and like all previous years, we've not done particularly well, despite the best of intentions.

If you want to see how we did, follow this link - we're in 21st place:

https://www.seti-germany.de/boinc_penta ... athlon.php

At the end of the day, it is a numbers game, and we simply do not have enough members or hosts to actually compete with the "big boys".

But, many thanks to those who DID make an effort...you know who you are, so I am grateful for your support.

Perhaps one year we might make a better "go" of it...but I guess that depends on whether enough members want to get involved?

Thanks for your efforts Tim

Could have been worse, at least we beat Russia

It was good practice for us newbies, next year we will stomp it

Hi Stephen

Well, *thank you* for YOUR efforts, which were significant, compared to the other participating UBT members...

I've always liked these Pentathlon Challenges as they are well organised, the SETI.Germany team put a lot of effort/work into it and it does generate lots of completed tasks for the projects involved...

I guess it's the "taking part" bit that makes it special, knowing you are part of a worldwide group, all crunching at the same time...

And as you say, there's always next year !
