Sawyer's Cancer Fighting Network

Post by chriscambridge »

If anyone wants to help out (eg join the team) for the remaining 12 days, I am sure any support would be most welcome.

So far: 855 years out of 1,000 (18th Aug)

Due to the current pandemic, I think many members are crunching both Cancer and/or Covid..
I'm honored to dedicate my team's efforts to my Dad, OldChap, and all those who find themselves unexpectedly on this road. Hi, my name is Sawyer and I'm 14 years old. My dad has brain cancer and I need your help. My dad was lucky. He had emergency brain surgery, a second awake brain surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. Treatment is ongoing. I need your help to find the next treatment and help cure my dad. My goal is 1000 years of cancer research before my dad’s next birthday in Sept 2020.

Hi all

I'm a bit late seeing this.

Sadly, I cannot join in as I'm team "Captain". But if others want to join then this is the WCG Team page, from where you can join in.

(Just remember to rejoin UBT afterwards !! - https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/tea ... TGC4G1RP1 )

Currently at 881 years out of 1,000 (21 August)

A great achievement, it would be a shame for it to fail at the last minute (I know, I haven't done much for it but I am now)

It would be a shame as the team only a little bit more of a push to in order to hit the 1,000 year mark.

[CSF] Damon Hill (from CRUNCHERS SANS FRONTIERES) has just joined the team and he is doing some very good numbers, around 300K per day, so that is going to really help.

Hi all

Looking at the Sawyers Team page the current TOTAL CRUNCHING stats show:
Total Run Time (yrs:dys:hrs:min:sec) (Rank) 900:157:23:54:12 (#176)

Avg. Run Time Per Calendar Day (yrs:dys:hrs:min:sec) 2:233:19:21:16
So, they've gone from:

855 years on 18th Aug
881 years on 21st Aug (+16 yrs in 3 days)
900 years on 23rd Aug (+19 yrs in 2 days)

EDIT (01/09):
With about 8 days to go, they need a slightly higher RAC to be able to hit the 1000 yrs target for ALL projects - the CANCER-based sub-project only account for about half of the total.

So, if any team member fancies giving them some assistance with any spare CPU cycles, feel free to switch teams (see above for the link).

Total Run Time (yrs:day:hrs:min:sec) (Rank) 921:348:00:36:43 (#171)
Avg. Run Time Per Calendar Day (yrs:day:hrs:min:sec) 2:251:02:06:03
921 years on 25th August (+21 years in two days)

With six days to go that should be another 60 - 65 years worth.

Looks like they're going to just fall short :(

An extra 16 years worth of crunching needed in six days means another 970 ish threads needed.

Just been re-reading Sawyers blogs and he only mentions "before my dad’s next birthday in September 2020" not the start. Also, he states that "We surpassed our initial goal on December 6, 2019, less than three months after we got started."

Tends to imply the deadline is not the start of September but sometime after the sixth. Should be easily doable :D

Hi all

The Sawyers Team are currently (as of stats update at midnight on 28th Aug) at:
Total Run Time (yrs:dys:hrs:min:sec) (Rank) 955:285:09:36:24 (#167)
Avg. Run Time Per Calendar Day (yrs:dys:hrs:min:sec) 2:278:06:24:33
Since the last stat of a shade under 922 yrs on 25th Aug, they've added just under 34 years in 3 days !!

Just under 3 full "crunching" days to the end of August and they need another 44 or so years of Run Time - hopefully they can make it and esp before the "early September" birth date.

Total Run Time (y:d:h: m:s) (Rank) 1004:067:05:47:17 (#163)
Avg. Run Time Per Calendar Day (y:d:h: m:s) 2:307:12:28:49
Job done :handgestures-thumbupleft:

Edit:
Job NOT done :(

Turns out only cancer and Covid related projects are actually counting so that's Mapping Cancer Markers, Smash Childhood Cancer, Microbiome Immunity Project and OpenPandemics - COVID-19.
Total Run Time (y:d:h: m:s) 943:309:16:19:41
Still another few days to go.

Hi Mark

Ah - well spotted - I'd been counting all of their teams crunching and not counting just the Cancer based sub-projects.

(From the teams website (which I'd sadly not paid much attention to :-():

"My goal is to do 1,000 years of cancer research before my Dad’s next birthday in September 2020."

In which case they will fall well short...

Code: Select all

Statistics Last Updated:	31/8/20 23:59:59 (UK style)

Project Points Generated	Results Returned	Total Run Time (y:d:h:m:s) - Status

Mapping Cancer Markers 710,567,514 961,375 463:022:12:06:23 - Active
Smash Childhood Cancer 68,259,255 226,561 31:157:09:27:03 - Intermittent
So, that's about 494 years...for Cancer research.

I'm not sure about their claim:
Since September 2019 we've done 891 years, 32 days, 20 hours of cancer research
as of 8/27/20
Total research time includes four projects:
(Mapping Cancer Markers, the Microbiome Immunity Project, Smash Childhood Cancer, and OpenPandemics COVID-19)

The Covid-19 and Microbiome sub-projects are dealing with virus and bacterial issues (respectively) which I don't think can be regarded as "cancers"?

And it seems that sometime after 14th Dec 2019, someone re-wrote the footer of their home page to add the non-cancer related sub-projects:

https://web.archive.org/web/20191214215 ... ancer.com/

Sad that this was needed really...

Code: Select all

Statistics Last Updated:	31/8/20 23:59:59 (UK style)

Project Points Generated	Results Returned	Total Run Time (y:d:h:m:s) - Status

OpenPandemics - COVID-19	400,152,793 700,848 332:310:01:27:32 - Active
Africa Rainfall Project 77,615,298 16,568 52:223:07:12:40 - Active
Microbiome Immunity Project	165,036,226 374,796 116:184:17:18:43 - Active
Help Stop TB 2,659,772 867 1:280:15:18:27 - Active

Beta Testing 1,079,590 1,515 0:288:17:46:50 - Intermittent

FightAIDS@Home - Phase 2	8,724,066 7,914 4:239:18:20:28 - completed
OpenZika 790,346 1,872 0:185:02:49:11 - completed
...and about 506 years on other projects

Maybe they need to change the website to reflect the numbers for actual cancer research?

But still give the lad "kudos" for making a big effort on behalf of his dad.

Personally I think he should have changed it to 1,000 years WCG research; all projects are as valid, especially if you are going to include some non-cancer projects but not others.

If you look back at the website even further I am pretty sure he initially asked for 500 years "Cancer" research, and when that got completed he changed it to 1,000 years.

In my eyes the target has now been achieved hence I am going to change back teams. I crunched just under 39 years for Sawyer so I am happy with this result.

All four projects now at 953:256:01:36:45
Cancer projects now at 496:187:016:18:24

Might just make 1,000 years in the selected projects but they're not going to get 1,000 years worth of cancer research before the time runs out.

I'll continue until the sprint (if it's a CPU one) or until the end of the weekend then swap back. Not done as well as Chris, I only managed 5 years :(

Latest stats show "Total Run Time (y:d:h: m:s) (Rank) 1058:034:21:28:17 (#159)" with 594+ on the two cancer projects, so I think that is it. I'm swapping back to UBT now.

989 years, 317 days, 13 hours
of cancer research
Should be finished today so I'll be switching back tonight.

On September 7th, 2020, we reached our goal of 1,000 years of cancer research processing time. Thank you so much to each and every one of you who helped us reach the goal.
