PrimeGrid: Aussie Aussie Aussie! Oi! Oi! Oi! Summer Solstice Challenge

This section is where you can post topics related to Challenges from other websites, such as Formula-BOINC, SETI-Germany and BOINCstats, as well as project challenges such as from WCG, PrimeGrid et al.

As a Team, we really want to engage as many team members with these challenges, as this gives us a great way of attracting more members to our Team...plus we get to show our strengths as a Team by (hopefully) doing well in each one.

PS: I have moved lots of topics into this section where they are relevant...as you can see, we've always been happy to take part in Challenges...and long may that continue ;-)

PrimeGrid: Aussie Aussie Aussie! Oi! Oi! Oi! Summer Solstice Challenge

Post by UBT - Timbo »

Hi all

If your GPU's are not doing anything then try this:
The longest day of the year (in the southern hemisphere!) is drawing near, and to mark this turning point in the year, PrimeGrid is offering a 10-day challenge on the GFN-21, GFN-22, and GFN-DYFL subprojects. Will you be the first to discover a prime in one of these so-far unlucky categories?
The challenge will run from December 12th 04:19:00 UTC until December 22nd 04:19:00 UTC.

For more information, questions and general banter and merry making please join us on the forums at https://www.primegrid.com/forum_thread.php?id=8916

Hi

I thought you might have not selected the right sub-projects but you're not listed as producing anything on John's stats page but you're still showing as being a member on the Primegrid site. I have no idea why you're not showing - thought it might be because you've changed an email but that can't be right as you'd not be on John's site.

I should have enough data on Milky Way now, so have stopped that again. I've left two big GPUs on Collatz and moved the others to PrimeGrid.

Hi Mike

Thanks for the input/concern. I think there's a number of reasons:

1) I had a cache of Moo! tasks that hadn't finished yet so the PG tasks hadn't started
2) The PG tasks are particularly long in duration and will take a while to finish and then upload/validate
3) I've actually returned 2 tasks, but they are pending validation :-(
4) And once they do validate, unless I have more than 154,800 credits, I won't be listed (as the current individual stats ends at 154,821.87)

UPDATE: I've just seen my stats and I'm listed and just 194 credits behind you, having now completed 2 tasks ;-) So, each task seems to earn around 154,000 credits each :-) (hence why no stats showing credits less than 154,000 !!).

PS: On my GTX970s, these PG tasks do rather slow down one's graphics performance, so at work, I've had to suspend the PG task, as the PC was too sluggish and I couldn't do any work !!

Hi

I'm only being a bit half-hearted on this - just doing 1 at a time as, if I have both GPUs running, one of them ramps up to 90 degrees so I have to manipulate them to just the one WU the cooler GPU only.

I am also not fully in this, since I’m still cranking Collatz to hold our points there. Still, we climbed another place and are actually sitting behind the (host) Australians now.

I think you've gained a place again now :D

Might give this a go on a couple of GPUs tonight since Moo! and Collatz seem stable and it's only for a few more days. Any pointers/recommendations?

Well, I'm sure that you know the rules, but it's only for these applications:
GFN-21
GFN-22
GFN-DYFL

The DYFL ones are long and pay 75% bonus points due to the length. They take close enough to a day on a 2080 Ti.

I have the Ti running the 'Do You Feel Lucky' applications and then the Titan Pacsals runing the 21 & 22 apps. There's only 5 days left, and it's quorum 2 so hard to tell what would be best to run. Having a look at the tasks, the DYFL tasks have validated pretty quickly for me, so it is probably worth running those for a couple of days at least, on your 2080 supers. Any older GPUs might not manage them quickly enough.

I just wondered if any sub project was a better choice than the others.

I've put the Supers on DYFL and we'll see how they go.

Thanks.

I don't have enough data, but do know that my 2080 Ti on DYFL is showing about 2.5x the points of the dual-Titan (Pascal) machine that's trying to pull the 21 and 22 jobs. It doesn't look like I've completed a whole 22 job as yet.

Homefarm has a RTX 2080 Ti that has completed both GFN 21 and DYFL tasks. Doesn't seem to be doing the GFN 22 tasks so no data on those.

GFN 21 was 17,778.15 seconds for 154,828.26 credits (8.7089 credits per second)
DYFL was 79,918.64 seconds for 946,881.13 credits (11.8481 credits per second)

I'm sticking to the DYFL tasks :D

Looks about right. I saw 4.8 per second and 6 per second for the Titans, on 21 vs DYFL. I think the DYFL jobs will take a couple of days on the Titans though. I'll leave as-is for now.

I have PM'd Homefarm on PrimeGrid. Looks like he/she has an Angus (cattle) farm down south. It also like they have a solid amount of GPU horsepower and a good amount of modern CPU kicking about. Didn't look like they've been on the forum before?

Those are some fine cows.

So, he did respond. He says that he usually crunches away in his own little world but might drop by sometime. We shall see. Seems like a nice bloke. He's thinking about selling some gear, fixing his cooling, maybe getting some second hand (bigger) CPUs. Sounds familiar :)

Hi Damien

Thanks for making contact. :-)

I have to say that in most circumstances, I'm not so keen to interrupt people "crunching away in their little world"...I guesss it's because I value my own space (beyond BOINC) and hence I prefer to just let people get on with it...unless of course there's something generic that's worth communicating to team members.

That's why I value the forum so much as it gives a space for people to comment (if they want) or to just sit and be "wall flowers" ;-)

I'm I correct in thinking there's about 67 hours left to run for this challenge (as of 08:19)?

My first DYFL tasks finished in 27 hours so I should be able to squeeze another couple in per GPU before switching to the shorter tasks.

Anyone got relative times for the three types of tasks so I can work out what to switch to and when to maximise my contribution?

Hi Mark,

Challenge ends on 22nd Dec at 04:19 UTC (which is GMT). So, as of 8:19 today, that would mean it had 68 hours to run.

This might help a little bit:

My GTX970's are taking from 130,000 - 147,000 seconds (36-40 hours) per GFN 21 task and earns approx 154,000 credits.

I daren't run any of the other tasks, as they would take a lot longer...though I now see that the rewards are quite a bit better, so perhaps I made the wrong choice?

Thanks Tim.

So I should have time for another three DYFL as they started at half five yesterday afternoon (finish at ~19:30/19th, ~21:30/20th and 23:30/21st) leaving me with roughly five hours.

I'll have a look to see if the GFN21 will finish in that time but it doesn't look like it as even 2080Ti's are taking 20 hours with them.

I'm sure you've figured your timings out already, but here is my Titan Pascal host:

https://www.primegrid.com/results.php?h ... e=4&appid=

As you'll know, in single precision, these GPUs are very close to 1080Tis. I did a couple of DYFLs first and then set to only accept 21s and 22s.

The 21s took almost 9 hours, the 22s took about 30 hours, and the DYFLs took ~43-44h. Generally speaking, the 2080Tis take half as much time for each. The credit earned was ~4.8 p/s for the 21's and then ~6 p/s for the 22s and DYFLs on Titan Pascals.

Obviously your 2080 supers will be closer to the 2080Tis than the Titan Pascals ...

It at least looks like doing 22s will be a good idea for the moment and then the 21s pretty soon. Not long to run.

I am not paying a huge amount of attention to this one (not being a FB sprint), but always good to put in a showing :)

Thanks Damien.

My Supers are doing the DYFL in about 27 hours so if the times scale, I *might* manage to get a couple of GFN21 in during the last few hours.

I'll swap over once the last DYFL's have started and keep my fingers crossed.

On the individual stats, it's just a question of pride now as to whether you can improve on your position...though with some tasks taking a very long time, they need to be completing and validated pretty soon else they won't count as part of this Challenge.

Hi Damien

Yup - not a bad effort overall, but clearly this Challenge was best suited to the higher end GPUs...my 3 or 4 generations old GTX970's were not up to doing anything except the basic tasks...so, that limited my contribution.

But we made a good stab at it, and 14th out of 93 is still better than I expected.

Those are some fine cows.

Hi Damien, Thanks for the accolade on the cows :-D Hard work but worthwhile.

Hiya Richard - glad you dropped by :) Mark (Woodles) and I are doing a bit of a push on PrimeGrid at the moment and I’ve been seeing your name on the Boincstats charts.

I did realise that I had Einstein running too though ... ooops! I’ve switched CPU over to TN-Grid, so also crunching there while QuChem is out of action.

BTW Richard, I find the best way to use this forum is to use the menu top left near the FAQs to find new posts. That might be totally evident to you already, but took me a while to catch on :)
