Re: SETI@Home Wow!-Event 2019
Hi all
I'm not sure if anyone would be interested in participating in this event...but, one thing is for sure - it is happening during a period when the FB Sprints are taking a rest...
So, the 12th FB Sprint ends on 4th August at 10pm UTC, and the 13th Sprint starts on 29th August at 10pm UTC - the same day when the 2019 Wow event ends, though the latter ends at 4pm UTC.
It is therefore possible to support both FB Sprints and the 2019 Wow event without any clashes.
So, feel free to register - this is not a BOINC Team event, it is for individuals, who can choose which "astrological star sign" team they prefer. See their registration page for details - you will need your SETI@home "User ID", found on your account page on the SETI@home website.
regards
Tim

Excellent - well done !!
I've just re-allowed network access too, so I'm uploading some completed tasks.
But, we're in different sub-teams:
https://www.seti-germany.de/Wow/stats/t ... INC%20Team
So, hopefully my 2 PC's have done better than your Lenovo
Uploading completed: Now have 131 tasks awaiting validation and about 150 other tasks already awarded credits

Yup - I had similar issues...
The problem is that SETI project limits everyone to 100 CPU and 100 GPU tasks.
So, multi-core CPU's are disadvantaged, if they are bunkering tasks.
Fortunately, my quad core PC was able to bunker enough to cover about the same time as the GPU tasks it had downloaded...and I had downloaded some Einstein GPU tasks, just in case I ran out of SETI GPU tasks.
On the Xeon, I downloaded some Yafu CPU tasks as the 16 core ran out of SETI CPU tasks real quick
But well done for getting 21st place ...I'm in a lowly 50th place...but that's out of 475 particpants (so far).

Re: SETI@Home Wow!-Event 2019
I wasnt aware of that limit; that makes sense now why some hosts are having trouble getting tasks, and of course the seriously small bunkers.
BTW if anyone is running NVIDIA GPUs, you might find the CUDA apps are not worth running as they take substantially longer than the OpenCL version; at least on 1080/Tis, not sure about other GPUs.
If you just keep aborting them then SETI eventually only seems to send across the OpenCL ones (although you have to keep your eye on it as occasionally it will send some of the others).

Re: SETI@Home Wow!-Event 2019
Hi all
Just a reminder: There is an Optimised SETI app, that you can download for free, that speeds up CPU and GPU tasks.
see here for info and the link:
viewtopic.php?f=94&t=6449#p124911
For CPU tasks, you might need to see which instruction set your CPU supports, such as SSE, SSE2, SSE3, etc
If you are unsure then go here:
http://www.cpuid.com
and download their free program that allows you see which CPU supports. Then select that specific Optimsied version, using the
For NVidia GPUs, the OpenCL version is much faster than the CUDA version, so use that Optimised selection.
(I don't have AMD/ATI or Intel graphics so I can't say which of those work best).

Personally I am not running any external apps.. If they work, SETI should build them into BOINC apps.

I think that's just because lots of crunchers just re-allowed their PCs to download more SETI tasks...(once the WOW event started) !!
Good advice - though see my previous posting above !chriscambridge wrote: ↑Thu Aug 15, 2019 6:41 pm BTW if anyone is running NVIDIA GPUs, you might find the CUDA apps are not worth running as they take substantially longer than the OpenCL version; at least on 1080/Tis, not sure about other GPUs.

You shouldn't need to abort the CUDA tasks, if you use the Optimised program and it's settings - since installing it for the last Sprint, I've only received OpenCL GPU tasks.

Fair enough.
I think the issue with the SETI project is that they don't want to spend time (or money) on developing new better programs compared to what they've developed previously. Trouble is that the SETI program isn't being updated to take into account the more specialist CPU functions that are now available.
It's been proved in the past, that the optimised app(s) (that have been created in the past by 3rd parties) provides just as good info for the project as their standard one. And if they didn't they wouldn't be validated.
Other projects have successfully introduced 3rd party optimised code into their standard code - I think Einstein@home was one of the first to do that

Hopefully at some point (funds permitting) SETI will do the same as Einstein.
I did take a look at the lunatics website but there was zero information about the app, or what, or how it works; and the website looked like a 12 year old had created it. I didn't really give me much confidence in downloading and installing any programs from it.

The website I suggested has the basic v0.45 lunatics code.
So I assume you visited the link I gave and not this one:

Although that does have some useful readme files on the "downloads" page

Re: SETI@Home Wow!-Event 2019
So I have been chatting to one of the largest SETI crunchers, Ian & Steve C, currently #1 Worldwide, about these optimised apps:
Aug. 15, 20:33 Ian: but its literally 4-5x slower than the optimized Linux app
Aug. 15, 20:33 Ian: just the SoG app + aggressive command line parameters
Aug. 15, 20:32 Spectator: No optimized apps for Win10?
Aug. 15, 20:32 Spectator: I hate linux.. I was running Linux mint, but everytime I moved from 1080 to 210 the drivers got all messed up..
Aug. 15, 20:30 Ian: you have to run Linux
Aug. 15, 20:30 Ian: yes we are
Aug. 15, 20:28 Spectator: Can anyone give any guidance on this?
Aug. 15, 20:28 Spectator: Are the bigger crunchers using the optimized SETI (external) apps? (NVIDIA)

And..
Aug. 15, 20:51 Spectator: yeah very true.. for now I'll leave everything as is.. then setup a test host later to try out boinc.7z install
..
Aug. 15, 20:46 motqalden: http://www.arkayn.us/lunatics/BOINC.7z
Aug. 15, 20:45 motqalden: there is an optimzed app package that has the boinc client and everything. just extract it to home and run boincmgr. don't even need to install boinc first
Aug. 15, 20:43 motqalden: i installed linux mint and optimized apps yesterday for the first time and it was pretty straight forward.
..
Aug. 15, 20:37 Spectator: Im a complete newbie on linux..
Aug. 15, 20:37 Spectator: Will the SETI optimized app for linux app run okay on Linux mint? Is there a link with full install/setup instructions anywhere?

The "force download" mp3 is actually, I think, just a rather irritating background music file...it just plays while you are browsing the URL !!
And yes, it is that link that I used to download the installer (at the top of the page) in your choice of either x86 or 64bit.

Hi Chrischriscambridge wrote: ↑Thu Aug 15, 2019 9:06 pm To put this in context, Ian is running 10x2070, 1x1080ti, and if I remember rightly a couple of 2060s. His hourly output on SETI is well over 1 million credit.
I am running 8x1080Ti, 1x1080, plus around 200 vCores. My hourly output is around 6K!
So I think its clear this optimized NVIDIA SETI Linux app is how everyone is doing these insane numbers..
Ah - that could be true...(about the Optimised Linux app).
Well, I too am not a Linux devotee, having tried it a few times and always coming a cropper...plus for most of my needs, (work and play) I do rather prefer Windows, which despite it's failings, it allows me to earn a living and have some "leisure" time too...
Maybe one day, if/when the Windows/Linux merger goes ahead (as it seems to be at present), then there is a good chance I'll jump on that bandwagon...but for now, as much as I want to compete with the "big boys" in terms of some decent credits from SETI, I'll just toodle along, as I cannot justify multiple NVidia 10x0 Series GPUs...it took me long enough to stump up for some GTX970s as it was
If your Linux Mint trial goes OK, let us know how you get on?

I have now pulled a host offline, built a Linux Mint install USB, and am now installing LM; its a hard thing to watch people with a couple of GPUs hammering you even though you have many more cards
Linux mint installed, about to install that BOINC.7z file now; will give you an update if and when done.

All setup and running!
In case any wants to try it also:
1) download BOINC.7z and unpack to /home
2) doubleclick boincmngr
3) close add project
4) go into advanced view
5) add SETI
6) check event manager to make sure GPUs have CUDA and OpenCL
BENCHMARK:
CUDA tasks on 1080Ti normally takes over 10 mins.. On Linux Opt App tasks are taking around 50 seconds!
Still waiting for some OpenCL tasks. Normally these take around 5 mins to complete.

According to the WOW shoutbox, everyone is having problems uploading work.
And one of the admins on SETI has posted:

That might be partly my "doing" as I pinged out a message via the SETI@home website to advise members that we were participating in the WOW! event.
So, maybe Gav responded upon seeing that?
And in the meantime, it looks like you and I are fighting it out for 2nd place in the WOW! stats for UBT:

I'm really hoping this works out well for you and you give a few other SETI members a run for their money
You're already up to 24th (out of 530) particpants and their website reckons you can overtake at least 7 others, in the next 67 hours...

I would not give too much credence to the 'over/under take stats' as the pending situation is jumping people about all over the place. My hourly figure jumps from around 15K to 75K depending on validated pendings. I currently have over 6K tasks pending verification and its increasing by about 80% of my crunching every hour.and it looks like we will overtake the french

Great to see extra SETI crunchers coming onboard the challenge, especially SETI giants such as Chris O; 119 Million, thats some crunching. And now 9 members on our WOW! team - with Chris Oliver now coming onboard...

We now have 21 members involved with the WOW! event.
We're now up to 12th place overall...having overtaken Hungary and L'AF...and SETI.USA are just 30,000 points ahead at present.
With the event lasting another 10 days, there's still a chance more members will join in and we can climb up higher.

Re: SETI@Home Wow!-Event 2019
There might be a bit of a delay as one of my host decided to use up 500GB of storage in 12 hours (due to PCIE errors); seems if you run lunatics on a Asus mobo (X79-X99) you need make a Grub modification for the Kernel. That is done now so hopefully stats will be back on track.
On the flipside I just added another 1080, plus turned on all CPU cores (90%) so hopefully that will help make up the numbers.
At this rate I will be expecting dividends from British Gas as well as an invite to the next AGM.

Yup - hope you get it sorted out - I've seen a few msgs on the WOW! shoutbox and can see that a few SETI members have been offering useful tips and advise with regards to your setup.
Hope you've managed to work your way through the minefield and get it sorted out.
The SETI GPU app seems to only take 0.04 CPU, so it is possible that you could run 100% CPU and not affect the GPU. (Although if you are running multiple GPUs on one mobo, then it might be different).
Now I'd like to see how you can use GAS to power your rigs Maybe a pipeline into a gas burner, heating some water that turns to steam, that makes a turbine rotate, that runs a generator, that produces some DC voltages that feed an inverter that powers all your rigschriscambridge wrote: ↑Mon Aug 19, 2019 8:53 pm At this rate I will be expecting dividends from British Gas as well as an invite to the next AGM.

To be honest the GPU Users Group were very helpful and in the end it was quite simple to get it sorted with help; it just involved running a few Linux commands.

Re: SETI@Home Wow!-Event 2019
Hi all
YAY !!!!
UBT is now #10 on the team charts and we have 23 members supporting this event.
CNT are the next team above, but their daily RAC is a bit higher than ours (currently) so we'll have to see what happens over the next 9 days - as they could reduce their RAC or we could increase ours
CNT also have 51 members of their team, but they don't have a "NCODED"
https://www.seti-germany.de/Wow/stats/teams/2019
More actual stats later

I think the message you sent out Tim has had a really good effort in bringing in UBT members.
Seems that there is a lot of support for SETI within the team.
With 9 days left who knows what will happen; even in the last day or so we have seen a number of other crunchers drop their output numbers.
What we really need is a Woodles

Pity though, as I think we could have really made a mark across all stats using this optimised app.
I have 8 years of SETI crunching to catch up on so Im quite happy about this challenge.

Re: SETI@Home Wow!-Event 2019
PrimeGrid is an excellent suggestion as its one of the only projects that you can actually see the results (or lack of results) pretty quickly.
Its a bit of a pity that SETI WOW don't let all the other challenges use their site/stats system as its clearly something to behold; no other event (FB, PG, or whoever) collates and cross-references stats in the way SETI Germany has done.
In case anyone didn't notice, SETI Germany just updated the graphs in each user page to show historic positions (from this event).
We are in good company then, along with Francis Bacon, John Napier, Galileo Galilei, Nicolaus Copernicus, Robert Boyle, Thomas Edison, Charles Darwin, Charles Lindbergh, Ernest Shackleton, Charles Dickens, Lord Byron, Lewis Carroll, and Robert Burns, ...

Talk about "coincidences" and how certain brains "think alike" - as I've already emailed SETI.Germany with a question as to whether I could licence their code, in order to help build a new UBT-centred stats website...
I've also contacted Neil Munday, who is a UBT member, and who produces his own stats website here:

I'm going to lose some crunching time, as I'm going away and need to shut down my PC.
Hopefully I'll get some more done before the end of the challenge.....
I'd been assuming that it runs until the end of the month but I see that it finishes on the 29th, so that'll limit how much more I can do, pity.

I can't guarantee that I will continue at 100% GPUs + CPUs for the rest of the event, as today the inside temp was 26c with the aircon on full - and the rest of the week is going to be even warmer.
But I'll probably just stop the CPUs to begin with and then see how that changes the inside temp.

Not a problem - you've already done more than enough to help push the Team to a very creditable position.
So, if you need to back off, then so be it....we can't have you getting "hot under the collar" due to your CPUs

Re: SETI@Home Wow!-Event 2019
Well, you overtook me a day or so ago...and I thought "that's fine", I'm sure I can retake my lead, (once the bloomin' Yafu tasks complete).
And so it would have been, but there was a power outage at my office yesterday morning so, I've lost about 36 hours worth of SETI crunching...worth about 18,000 credits. (16 cores, taking 2 hours each and earning say 60 credits per task).
Fortunately, I had to go shopping today so I stopped off and restarted the PC...plus I've now tweaked the BIOS and the Windows settings, so in the event of another power outage, when the juice comes back on so should the PC and it should restart crunching again.
The only "fly in ointment", is if the office router drops out and DHCP gives me a new IP address...but I'll counter that but ensuring I have a big cache so, the crunching will happen offline, until I'm next in the office.
And now, back to some useful crunching and with luck I can pull back some of the 14,000+ credits gap.
regards
Tim

Great stuff - welcome to the WOW! event.
It'll be interesting to see how many credits you can amass in the short time left.
Of course, the fact that some tasks will require a wingman to "validate" your returned work, might mean that some credits will not be awarded prior to the closing deadline.
So, the full power of your Titans might not be totally unleashed

Re: SETI@Home Wow!-Event 2019
Hi all
FINAL stats from 27 members:
A great Team effort from all concerned...ncoded gains our #1 place (for our Team) with just over 7 million credits and also gets to #28 (out of 696) in the overall Wow! Participant standings !! So, well done to ncoded for his supreme efforts !!
So, 13th (out of 88) teams this year, which is an exceptionally good result, though if we didn't have ncodeds superb effort, we'd have only 2,921,869 credits, putting us down in about 26th place.
And BIG thanks to everyone who contributed to the effort and maybe next year we can do better
regards
Tim

So. congrats to ~ Daniel ~ and CaroleB for helping your group become the #1 Group in 2019. Also congrats to Chris Oliver for helping Capricornus achieve 3rd place.

Hi DamienDamien Healy wrote: ↑Wed Aug 28, 2019 8:54 pm
Yes, validation will be a killer. Let's see how it goes!
Well, you did pretty good:
28 Aug 2019 - 18,666 credits (11:00 to 24:00 UTC = 13 hours) = 1,435 credits per hour
29 Aug 2019 - 46,547 credits (00:00 to 16:00 UTC = 16 hours) = 2,909 credits per hour
So, over the 14 day (336 hour) period, you might have got close to around 1 million credits (and based on the likelihood that your 2nd days worth of credits included some credits that were crunched on the 1st day before and then validated on the 2nd day).
That's well worth the effort
So, thanks for joining in
regards
Tim
