It's on its way!

At last, I have ordered my first ASIC - 1.6 GHs overclockable to 2.2 GHs - I'm possibly gonna need help on how to set it up and how to overclock, though :D

Congratulations Chris :)

Tim or Mikee are probably your best bet for setting it up or maybe Keith (hgblade) as they've all been through the process before, I never had any of the USB sticks.

There's also some useful information in here http://forum.ukboincteam.com/viewtopic. ... 50&start=0

If you're going to overclock it, you'll need at least a USB2 port or an external, powered hub and some sort of cooling. Just get it working first, you can 'soup it up' later :D

Well done Chris, I'm sure Tim or Mike will be able to help you get your ASIC set up. :D

I know what you mean Chris, it's a dangerously addictive feeling and it's a large part of the reason as to why I currently have five of the things working away next to me as i type this.

Never bothered with overclocking - quite happy to leave them running at stock speed.

What you need...

If you have just the one U2 then a spare USB port - preferably one with a bit of air to circulate.

If you're going to overclock then you'll need a USB fan.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/like/11138438 ... 108&ff19=0

To future proof (if you get more) then a powered hub is more than useful. I'm currently using ... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-High-Spee ... 19eb0aa3ab

You'll need to download the zadig drivers... http://zadig.akeo.ie/

Then it's simply a case of

1 - Plugging everything in. The U2 should have a bright red LED on now.
2 - Stop Windows looking for the driver.
3 - Run the zadig driver install.
4 - In BOINC Manager goto tools, add project - add project, add http://www.bitcoinutopia.net/bitcoinutopia/  as a project URL and create an account at BU.
5 - Select 'No new tasks' a soon as possible! By default all apps are selected so you'll get a load of WUs that will fail!
6 - Goto 'your account ' at BOINC Utopia - the Bitcoin Utopia Preferences.
7 - Uncheck everything except cgminer (Campaign #?) (for 1.6+GH/s ASICs) and save.
8 - At BOINC Manager - 'allow new tasks'.
9 - If everything goes as planned the U2 should now have an intermittent bright green LED and start to get hot.
10 - Watch the credits roll!

Hi Chris,

Looking at Mikee's step-by-step guide here:
There's a couple of things I'd mention:

step 0: Do not install the USB stick until you've finished crunching your last CPU BU task - then go to the Boinc tasks list and select "No new tasks" for BU.
Then close down Boinc Manager.

step 3: The Zadig tool can be obtained from here:
http://zadig.akeo.ie/

Run it, and at the top menu, select "Options > Show All Devices". You should then see in the upper drop down box something like "Silicon Labs CP210x..." With that selected, click on the box underneath that says "Install driver"....Once that has happened, then it should show "WinUSB" in the driver box.

step 4: leave this out as you already have a BU account and have been crunching CPU tasks

step 5: restart Boinc Manager and do as Mikee says

step 6 to step 10 - agreed, though I would only change to the 333MH tasks initially as they are pretty quick to complete and hence you can make sure the USB stick is working OK - once you've done a few of the 333MH tasks, then go to the BU website and change your preferences to accept the 1.6GH tasks - do NOT agree to the 20GH tasks, as your USB stick is not man enough to do those and it'll time out and you'll lose all the time spent on them.

Also, make sure you are running another CPU tasks from another project, as otherwise, the BU app might not recognise it is working....I'd suggest WUProp, as it is a low intensity task.

regards
Tim

Good to see - well done. See you've all ready given up on the 333MHz flavour gone onto 1.6GHz!

Don't worry if some of the WUs take a little longer than expected - some can take up to around an hour, most a lot less.

Hi Chris,

Excellent stuff.

Just remember to only shut your PC down, once a WU has finished....if you don't then the work done on the current WU will need to be re-done when you restart Boinc Manager...

So, just get into the habit of suspending any BU work that hasn't started (when you come to shut down the PC) and let the "current" WU finish.

That way, you don't half process a WU and then when you restart you have to start from scratch (on that WU). Obviously, once you restart, just "Resume" the BU workunits you suspended before and away you go.

regards
