Hi

The above has recently started, Magellan 500th Anniversary Challenge runs Nov 18 18:00:00 to Nov 28 17:59:59 (UTC).

If you're in for this make sure you've joined the team first!

These are long CPU only tasks and will multithread if allowed to - check preferences. I ran a couple of 5 thread versions and they nearly took a day. Currently trying 10 threads.

I'll join in on this...as I was only crunching ODLK tasks...

Brief Summary of the above:
If anyone else is interested, the sub-projects you need to allow (on your PG Preferences page) are:

Cullen Prime Search LLR (CUL) - 14 day deadline - 20% long job credit bonus
and/or
Woodall Prime Search LLR (WOO) - 14 day deadline - 20% long job credit bonus

I would enable both in case one project runs out of work

... and obviously, for best results on the Challenge, do not crunch any other PG, or non-PG CPU tasks at the same time as these tasks are multi-threaded and could use up most of your CPUs cores...these tasks are pretty intensive so dial back any overclocking you are doing, unless you have super-dooper cooling systems.

You can set the "Max # of simultaneous PrimeGrid tasks" and "Multi-threading: Max # of threads for each task" settings on the Preferences page - so no need for app_config files anymore !!

Also: Make sure that "Use CPU" is enabled in your PG preferences.

FWIW, I have 23 tasks, each of which are multi-threaded on 2 cores each. Estimated time to completion of these is between 3-6 days !!

So, I might see "two cycles" of tasks complete within the 10 day challenge, if I'm lucky !!

Lucky you...!! My geriatric CPU's have still yet to complete a single task

Most of my currently running tasks are only maybe 25%-30% through each one, though I do have one task on my quad-core host that is using all 4 cores (before I had a chance to tweak my preferences) and it should finish by tonight.

5pm Edit: This is a bit strange - my quad-core is now saying it'll take another 18 hours to complete....

Somehow, I also downloaded a 7-core task (on one of my Xeon hosts) and that might finish early tomorrow morning...

This Challenge is clearly only really suitable for up to date, faster CPUs compared to what my modest hosts have.

HI, These are a very demanding set of tasks.

They need lots of cores and AVX 512 to make any speed increase.

A 3950X using 15 cores at 3700Mhz takes 24000 secs.
the extreme I9 same core use, 14 in this case, takes 10500 secs. Very dramatic change.
