ahh now i see what you're doing. DOH!!!!!! im so stupid. multiple VMs. A lot of them seem to be paying for 3 droplet instances in TSCChelseaOilman wrote: ↑Sat Jul 25, 2020 1:55 am I set the tasks to use 4 threads and they still take a long time to finish. I didn't turn off HT though.

I didn't think of that Tim, what a great idea. I'm running GFN 19 again but could go back to PPS-SV for it's higher credits. That's if I can get a bunker going. The only downside is IF (big IF) you find a prime but miss first dibs.UBT - Timbo wrote: ↑Wed Jul 29, 2020 8:22 am Hi all

I am competing in this but all my hosts are offline, pending tonights announcement of the 13th Sprint project - and hopefully it might be PrimeGrid, so I can upload my results once the FB Sprint starts tomorrow night (and before THIS Challenge ends). If PG is NOT chosen, I'll maybe upload tonight and grab tasks from the relevant project.
regards

regardsTSC is a system to make it easy (point and click) to purchase cloud resources to run various BOINC projects. It's not for general purpose usage. It's just for running BOINC
Digital Ocean is a cloud provider. It (currently) provides the CPU resources you can rent from TSC
TSC is a "value added" layer on top of Digital Ocean, at least right now. TSC can use other providers too
This thread here has some info: viewtopic.php?f=21&t=6648Janos wrote: ↑Mon Aug 03, 2020 8:21 am In reference to this thread: viewtopic.php?f=21&t=6695 I'd be very interested in learning more about AC and TSC. Are you able to share some links?
totally agree with you on the first point. to use cloud computing for things like the covid research is admirable. people paying for vm instances to process folding@home or WCG.UBT - Timbo wrote: ↑Mon Aug 03, 2020 12:24 pmre: Cloud computing for BOINCbigsinky wrote: ↑Mon Aug 03, 2020 7:13 am i gave up on this when i found out most of AC just buy 3 droplet xeon VMs from TSC. Whether we 100% realise it or not, when we crunch data for BOINC it is costing each of us money - for the hardware, for the leccy to power it and for the time to actually "micro-manage" it.
So, if one were to put a price to this, one could imagine buying a decent mobo, CPU, RAM, hard drive, monitor, keyboard, mouse etc, plus internet access so, say £500-1000 for the hardware and £20/month for internet access.
For a newbie (who had no use of the PC other than for crunching), cloud computing might make financial sense, as for a similar cost, one could crunch data on the cloud for say £10/month for say 120 months.
ie PC cost = £500 + £20/month for say 36 months = £1220
OR cloud computing = £10/month for 10 YEARS = £1200
regards
Tim

your second point about crunching boinc for other reasons (as you say to win challenges and have 15 mins of fame) hits home and is at the heart of the matter. i know some of you guys have spent what amounts to a small fortune on your rigs. you do this because its fun (most of the time) and there is a bit of banter etc etc. some of you have been at this a long time. yes the initial outlay and then the running costs are sometime prohibitive so cloud computing makes economical sense. you're just spending your money in a different way. i have no truck with that. if you want to blow $2.4K a week with 500 3 core instances im not going to stand in your way. i can think of better things to spend my money on. just think it runs against the spirit of boinc. you crunched using your own computer. thats how it started out 25 years ago. i know times change and the way we do things changes. people will say how its crunching with cloud computers any different from what your doing. Start the droplet. point it at the project you want. keep feeding it money. the end result is the same. projects get result. if i want to throw a load of money at it so what.
Im ranting again. something i feel exercised about as if you couldn't tell. I'm probably making a mountain out of a mole hill. just nieve i suppose.
